Novena to the Holy Cross

Holy Cross - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer for Each Day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O my Lord Jesus Christ, I cast myself in spirit at the foot of Thy Holy Cross, and I implore Thy mercy. I acknowledge that I have sinned and have deserved the most severe chastisements. But I have recourse to Thy Passion and Death; I place all my hope in Thy infinite merits. O good Jesus, I am a poor sinner; have pity on me. I repent with my whole heart for having offended Thee. I promise, with the help of Thy grace, never to offend Thee again. I desire to make this novena in honour of Thy Holy Cross, for the glory of God, in thanksgiving for Thy great love, and to obtain the special grace of… (mention your intention).

Jour 1 : The Cross, a Sign of Contradiction

    Méditation

Let us meditate today upon the Holy Cross as a sign of contradiction. To the worldly, it is foolishness and a stumbling-block; but to us who are saved, it is the power and the wisdom of God. The world seeks pleasure, honours, and riches; the Cross teaches us to despise these things and to embrace suffering, humiliation, and poverty. It is the sacred standard under which we fight against our spiritual enemies. Let us not be ashamed of this sign, but rather glory in it, for it is the instrument of our salvation and the key by which the gates of Heaven were opened unto us.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Cross, O adorable instrument of our redemption! I adore thee and I venerate thee. Grant, I beseech Thee, that I may never be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Give me the strength to see in thee not a sign of shame, but the very power of God. By thy holy sign, deliver me from my enemies, and grant me the grace to live and die under thy protection. Amen.

Jour 2 : The Cross, the Tree of Life

    Méditation

The tree in the Garden of Eden was the cause of our first parents’ fall and of the entry of death into the world. But God, in His infinite wisdom, willed that another Tree, the wood of the Holy Cross, should become the source of our life. From the side of Christ, asleep in death upon this Tree, flowed forth the Sacraments which give life to the Church. The Cross, therefore, is the true Tree of Life, whose fruits give immortality. Let us approach it with faith and reverence, that we may be healed of the wounds of sin and nourished unto life everlasting.

    Prière du jour

O Holy Cross, true Tree of Life, which dost bear the Saviour of the world as thy most precious fruit, I thank Thee for the life which Thou hast restored unto me. Grant that I may ever find my refuge in thy shade and be nourished by thy saving fruit. May I be planted with Christ in the likeness of His death, so that I may also be in the likeness of His resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jour 3 : The Cross and the Forgiveness of Sins

    Méditation

Behold the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world, nailed to the Cross for our offenses. It was upon this altar that the great sacrifice of expiation was offered. From His five sacred wounds, as from fountains of mercy, flowed the Precious Blood that cleanses us from all iniquity. On the Cross, our Lord uttered those words of infinite mercy: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Let us, then, approach the Cross with contrite and humble hearts, confident that in the sacrifice there accomplished, we shall find pardon and peace.

    Prière du jour

O merciful Jesus, who didst deign to die upon the Cross for my sins, I cast myself at Thy feet and implore Thy forgiveness. By Thy Precious Blood shed for me, wash my soul from every stain. Give me a deep sorrow for my past offenses and a firm resolve to amend my life. O good Jesus, by the merits of Thy sacrifice on the Cross, grant me pardon and eternal life. Amen.

Jour 4 : The Cross and Our Sufferings

    Méditation

Our Lord hath said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” He did not promise us a life free from trial, but He showed us the way to sanctify our sufferings by uniting them to His own. Every pain, every sorrow, every trial, when borne with patience and love for the sake of Christ, becomes a portion of His saving Cross. Let us not, therefore, rebel against our afflictions, but see in them an opportunity to draw closer to our crucified Saviour and to make reparation for our sins and the sins of the world.

    Prière du jour

O my suffering Saviour, I desire to follow Thee, bearing my own cross. I accept from Thy hands all the trials and afflictions of this life. I unite my feeble sufferings with Thine own upon the Cross. Grant me the grace of patience and fortitude, that I may never complain, but rather rejoice in being able to suffer something for Thy sake. May my cross, united to Thine, be a pledge of my future glory. Amen.

Jour 5 : The Cross and Obedience

    Méditation

Let us consider the perfect obedience of our Lord, who, as the Apostle says, became “obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.” By the disobedience of one man, Adam, sin entered the world; by the obedience of one Man, Jesus Christ, salvation was wrought. The Cross stands as the eternal monument of perfect submission to the will of God the Father. It teaches us that the path to holiness lies not in doing our own will, but in conforming our will in all things to the divine will, even when it is most difficult.

    Prière du jour

O Lord Jesus Christ, model of all virtues, who by Thy perfect obedience on the Cross didst repair the disobedience of our first parents, grant me the grace to be ever obedient to the will of God. Root out from my heart all pride and self-will. Teach me to say in every circumstance, “Not my will, but thine, be done.” By the merits of Thine obedience, may I persevere in the service of God unto the end. Amen.

Jour 6 : The Cross, Victory over Death and Sin

    Méditation

The Cross, which appears to be an instrument of defeat and death, is in truth the standard of Christ’s glorious victory. Upon the Cross, He triumphed over the prince of this world. He conquered sin and vanquished death itself. By His death, He destroyed our death, and by His rising again, He restored our life. The Cross is thus a sign of hope and a promise of our own resurrection. It is our defense against the assaults of the devil and our strength in the hour of temptation. Let us fly to the Cross in all our spiritual battles, certain of finding there protection and victory.

    Prière du jour

O Christ the King, who by Thy Holy Cross didst triumph over death and hell, I acclaim Thee as my Victor and my Lord. Protect me by the power of Thy Cross from all the snares of the enemy. In the hour of temptation, be Thou my strength; in the struggle of death, be Thou my victory. Grant that, having fought the good fight under Thy standard on earth, I may share in Thy triumph in heaven. Amen.

Jour 7 : The Cross and the Love of God

    Méditation

“God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son.” The Cross is the supreme proof and measure of the infinite love of God for us. Contemplate the Saviour, with arms outstretched upon the Cross, as if to embrace the whole world in His love. Every wound speaks of His charity, every drop of His Blood is a testament to His affection for our souls. He loved us and delivered Himself for us. How can we fail to respond to such love? Let us resolve to love Him in return, with our whole heart, our whole soul, and our whole strength.

    Prière du jour

O most loving Jesus, who hast given me such an astonishing proof of Thy love in dying for me upon the Cross, I am confounded by my own coldness and ingratitude. Inflame my heart, I beseech Thee, with the fire of Thy divine love. Grant that the memory of Thy Passion may be ever engraved upon my mind, and that I may seek to please Thee in all things, who hast loved me unto the end. May I live for Thee alone, and may my last breath be an act of love for Thee. Amen.

Jour 8 : The Cross in the Life of the Christian

    Méditation

From the moment of our Baptism, we were signed with the sign of the Cross, consecrated to Christ crucified. This holy sign is made over us in every sacrament and blessing of the Church. It is our identity as Christians. As Saint Paul says, “God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.” To live as a Christian is to live in the shadow of the Cross, to embrace its principles, and to carry its mark not only on our foreheads but in our hearts and actions.

    Prière du jour

O Lord, who didst mark me with the sign of Thy Cross in Baptism, grant that I may live a life worthy of my calling. May I never bring shame upon this holy sign by my sins. Let me glory in nothing but Thee and Thy Cross. May it be my guide in life, my comfort in affliction, and my hope in the hour of my death. By this holy sign, may I be preserved from all evil and brought safely to Thy heavenly kingdom. Amen.

Jour 9 : The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

    Méditation

Today we meditate on the glorious Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The Church lifts high this sacred wood, not as a memorial of sorrow, but as the throne of a King and the trophy of His victory. It is the sign of the Son of Man which shall appear in the heavens at the last day, to the joy of the elect and the terror of the wicked. It is the ladder by which we ascend to heaven, the anchor of our hope, and the standard of the King of Glory. Let us, therefore, lift up our hearts in praise and thanksgiving for this holy instrument of our salvation, and venerate it with profound devotion.

    Prière du jour

We hail thee, O Cross, our only hope! In this time of triumph, increase grace for the pious and blot out the sins of the guilty. O King on high, may we who praise Thee for the victory of the Cross be led by Thee to our eternal home. O admirable Cross, which brought salvation to the world, we adore thee. O Christ Jesus, by the triumph of Thy Holy Cross, grant us the grace of final perseverance and a holy death, that we may praise Thee in heaven for ever and ever. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer for Each Day

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee, because by Thy Holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

(Here mention the grace you wish to obtain through this novena.)

O God, who didst will to sanctify the standard of the life-giving Cross, that it might be for us the cause of salvation; grant, we beseech Thee, that we who glory in this same Cross may also rejoice everywhere in Thy triumph and protection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
