Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer for Each Day
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
O God, who didst teach the multitude of the Gentiles by the preaching of blessed Paul the Apostle: grant, we beseech Thee, that we who celebrate his memory may also experience the benefit of his patronage. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Jour 1 : Day 1: The Grace of Conversion
Méditation
Let us consider how Saul, breathing threats and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, was journeying to Damascus when suddenly a light from heaven shone round about him. And falling on the ground, he heard a voice saying to him: ‘Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?’ This sudden and powerful grace completely transformed him, making of the Church’s greatest enemy her most ardent Apostle. Let us admire the power of God’s grace, which can change the hardest of hearts, and let us examine our own lives for any resistance we may have to His divine will.
Prière du jour
O glorious Saint Paul, who wast thrown to the ground, blinded, that thou mightest see the true light, obtain for us the grace of a sincere and profound conversion. Pray that we may respond with haste and fervor to the call of Christ, turning away from our sins and following Him without reserve. May we, like thee, become instruments of His peace and witnesses to His truth. Amen.
Jour 2 : Day 2: Zeal for the Gospel
Méditation
Reflect upon the immense zeal that consumed Saint Paul after his conversion. He who had once persecuted the Name of Jesus could not now stop proclaiming it. He journeyed through cities and wildernesses, faced perils from robbers, from his own nation, from the Gentiles, in the city, in the wilderness, in the sea, among false brethren. His sole desire was that Christ be known and loved. ‘Woe unto me if I preach not the gospel!’ he exclaimed. Let us ask ourselves if we possess even a spark of this apostolic fire in our own souls.
Prière du jour
O most zealous Apostle, Saint Paul, who didst travel the known world to spread the flame of Christ’s love, enkindle in our hearts a fervent zeal for the salvation of souls. Banish from us all tepidity and sloth, and make us eager to share the treasure of our faith with others, by our words, our actions, and our prayers. Amen.
Jour 3 : Day 3: The Virtue of Faith
Méditation
Saint Paul teaches us with divine clarity that we are justified not by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ. This is not a faith that is idle, but one that ‘worketh by charity.’ It is a complete surrender of the mind and will to God, an unwavering trust in His promises, and a firm belief in the truths He has revealed. Through this faith, we are united to Christ and receive the grace of salvation. Let us examine the quality of our faith: is it strong, living, and active in love?
Prière du jour
O Teacher of the Gentiles, Saint Paul, who didst so profoundly understand the mystery of faith, obtain for us a strong and unwavering belief in all that Holy Mother Church teaches. May our faith be not merely on our lips, but in our hearts and in our works, that we may please God and attain to the promise of eternal life. Amen.
Jour 4 : Day 4: The Virtue of Hope
Méditation
The Apostle Paul lived in a constant and joyful hope of the resurrection and the life of the world to come. ‘For I reckon,’ he says, ‘that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, that shall be revealed in us.’ This hope was his anchor in tribulation, his strength in persecution, and his comfort in chains. It was not a vague wish, but a certain expectation of possessing God forever. Let us ask if our hope is similarly fixed on heaven, or if we are too attached to the passing things of this world.
Prière du jour
O invincible Apostle, Saint Paul, who didst live in the blessed hope of heaven, obtain for us this most necessary virtue. In our sorrows and trials, may we lift our eyes to the eternal reward that awaits us. Grant that, despising earthly things, we may ever long for those which are heavenly, and run with patience to the fight proposed unto us. Amen.
Jour 5 : Day 5: The Virtue of Charity
Méditation
Consider the sublime hymn to charity which Saint Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians. ‘If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.’ He teaches that charity is patient, is kind, envieth not, is not puffed up, seeketh not her own. It is the queen of virtues, the very bond of perfection. Without it, all other gifts and works are nothing in the sight of God. Let us reflect on our own actions: are they motivated by a true and selfless love for God and our neighbor?
Prière du jour
O Apostle of love, Saint Paul, who didst so beautifully describe the preeminence of charity, fill our hearts with this divine fire. Teach us to love God above all things, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. Root out from our souls all bitterness, envy, and selfishness, that we may live in that perfect charity which is the foretaste of heaven. Amen.
Jour 6 : Day 6: Patience in Suffering
Méditation
Saint Paul’s life was a testament to patient endurance in suffering. He speaks of being ‘in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths often.’ He endured stonings, shipwrecks, hunger, and thirst. Yet, he rejoiced in his sufferings, for he knew that through them he was filling up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, for His body, which is the Church. He saw suffering not as a meaningless evil, but as a means of union with the crucified Saviour.
Prière du jour
O much-suffering Saint Paul, who didst glory in thy infirmities that the power of Christ might dwell in thee, obtain for us the grace of Christian patience. In our own trials, sicknesses, and sorrows, grant that we may not murmur or despair, but unite our sufferings with those of our Lord on the Cross, for our own sanctification and the salvation of the world. Amen.
Jour 7 : Day 7: The Virtue of Humility
Méditation
Despite his extraordinary gifts, his profound revelations, and his immense apostolic labours, Saint Paul was a model of profound humility. He called himself ‘the least of the apostles,’ one ‘not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.’ He acknowledged that all he was and all he did was by the grace of God alone. ‘By the grace of God, I am what I am.’ To keep him humble, God permitted him to be afflicted by a ‘thorn in the flesh.’ Let us learn from him to distrust ourselves and to place all our confidence in God.
Prière du jour
O humble Saint Paul, who didst recognize that all good in thee came from God, obtain for us the virtue of true humility. Preserve us from all pride, vanity, and self-love. Grant that we may know ourselves as we truly are in the sight of God, and that we may give Him the glory for any good that we may accomplish. Amen.
Jour 8 : Day 8: The Mystical Body of Christ
Méditation
It was Saint Paul who developed with such depth the doctrine of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ. ‘For as the body is one, and hath many members… so also is Christ.’ In this body, Christ is the head and we are the members, united to Him and to one another through Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. There is a communion of life and grace among all the faithful, on earth, in purgatory, and in heaven. This sublime truth calls us to a great love and solicitude for one another, for ‘if one member suffer any thing, all the members suffer with it.’
Prière du jour
O great Doctor of the Mystical Body, Saint Paul, obtain for us a deep understanding and a lived experience of our union with Christ and with all the members of His Church. May we ever live in charity and harmony, bearing one another’s burdens, and working together for the growth and holiness of the entire Body of Christ. Amen.
Jour 9 : Day 9: Perseverance unto Martyrdom
Méditation
Finally, let us contemplate the glorious end of Saint Paul’s life. After a life of unceasing labour for Christ, he could say with confidence: ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day.’ He sealed his testimony with his blood, being beheaded in Rome, and so passed from the struggles of this life to the eternal triumph of heaven. His perseverance to the end is a powerful model for us all.
Prière du jour
O triumphant Martyr, Saint Paul, who didst persevere unto the end and didst win the crown of glory, obtain for us the precious gift of final perseverance. In all the temptations and struggles of our life, be thou our protector. Grant that we may keep the faith, finish our course, and one day hear from our Lord the blessed words: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.’ Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer for Each Day
O glorious Saint Paul, who from a persecutor of Christianity didst become a most zealous Apostle, and who, to make known the Saviour Jesus Christ unto the ends of the world, didst suffer with joy imprisonments, scourgings, stonings, shipwrecks, and persecutions of every kind, and didst at last seal thy teaching with thy blood: obtain for us the grace to receive, as favors from the mercy of God, the infirmities, tribulations, and misfortunes of this life; that we may not be discouraged by them, but may rather show ourselves ever more faithful in the service of God.
(Here specify the particular grace for which you are praying.)
Through thy powerful intercession, may we persevere in faith, hope, and charity, until the day of our death, from which may we be transported to the blissful enjoyment of God in heaven. Amen.
