Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer
To be said each day.
O glorious St. Anthony, whom God has been pleased to endow with the gift of miracles, and who didst merit to hold in thy arms the Infant Jesus; I, a poor sinner, have recourse to thee, that thou mayest be my patron and protector. I place in thy care my body and soul, all my hopes, my troubles, and my anxieties. I beseech thee to accept me as thy child and servant. Assist me in all my thoughts, words, and actions. Though I know myself to be unworthy, I am confident that through thy merits and powerful intercession, I shall not be cast away, but shall obtain, with thee, the grace of God and life everlasting. And since thou art especially powerful in finding those things which are lost, I implore thee to obtain for me the grace which I now seek… (Here mention your request). Amen.
Jour 1 : Day 1: The Virtue of Faith
Méditation
Meditation
Let us consider the lively and unwavering Faith of Saint Anthony. He believed with a firm heart all the truths which God hath revealed, and was ready to lay down his life for them. He defended the Catholic Faith against the errors of heretics with such zeal and success that he earned the title ‘Hammer of Heretics.’ His faith was so pleasing to God that it was rewarded with the gift of miracles, and the sweet consolation of beholding and holding the Infant Jesus in his arms.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O glorious St. Anthony, who didst confound the foolishness of heretics with the wisdom of thy preaching, obtain for me, I beseech thee, a firm and living faith. Grant that my belief may be manifest in my actions, that I may never be ashamed to profess it, and that I may be ready to suffer all things rather than renounce the holy Faith of the Catholic Church. Strengthen my heart against all temptations to doubt, and make me a worthy child of the Church for which thou didst so mightily labour. Amen.
Jour 2 : Day 2: The Virtue of Hope
Méditation
Meditation
Let us meditate upon the firm Hope which Saint Anthony placed in God alone. He looked upon this world and its goods with holy indifference, knowing them to be fleeting and vain. All his desires were for the joys of Heaven. Amidst trials, persecutions, and the uncertainties of life, his heart was anchored in God, his refuge and his strength. He trusted entirely in the divine promises and the merits of Jesus Christ, and thus he was never confounded.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O blessed St. Anthony, who didst place all thy hope in the goodness of God, I implore thy intercession. In this valley of tears, I am often assailed by discouragement and despair. Obtain for me the grace of a steadfast hope, that I may never lose confidence in God’s mercy and providence. Teach me to desire heaven above all things, and to see all earthly trials as steps leading me to my true home. Protect me in my desolation and be my guide to everlasting life. Amen.
Jour 3 : Day 3: The Virtue of Charity
Méditation
Meditation
Let us reflect upon the ardent Charity of Saint Anthony. His heart was inflamed with love for God and for his neighbour. This love for God moved him to renounce the world and dedicate his life to prayer and penance. His love for his neighbour caused him to become the tireless servant of the poor, the sick, and the afflicted. He was truly a father to the poor, and his charity knew no bounds, extending even to his enemies, for whom he prayed.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O most charitable St. Anthony, whose heart was a furnace of divine love, enkindle in my soul a spark of that same fire. Obtain for me the grace to love God above all things, and my neighbour as myself for the love of God. Teach me to be merciful to the poor, to comfort the sorrowful, and to forgive those who have wronged me. May I, by works of charity on earth, merit to hear one day those blessed words: ‘Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you.’ Amen.
Jour 4 : Day 4: The Virtue of Purity
Méditation
Meditation
Let us consider the angelic Purity of Saint Anthony. From his youth, he consecrated his body and soul to God, and preserved his baptismal innocence unstained throughout his life. He guarded his senses with the utmost care, especially his eyes, lest they should become windows of sin to his soul. For this reason, he was called the ‘Ark of the Covenant’ and was deemed worthy to bear in his arms the spotless Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O pure and gentle St. Anthony, lily of chastity, I come to thee with shame for my own failings. I beseech thee, by thy wondrous purity, to obtain for me the grace to overcome all temptations of the flesh. Guard my mind from impure thoughts, my heart from unholy affections, and my body from sinful actions. May I learn from thee to cherish this beautiful virtue, and so to live that my body may be a fitting temple of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Jour 5 : Day 5: The Virtue of Humility
Méditation
Meditation
Let us meditate upon the profound Humility of Saint Anthony. Though he was filled with heavenly wisdom and gifted with extraordinary powers, he ever regarded himself as the least of all. He fled from honours and praise, choosing the humble life of a poor friar. He concealed his great learning until obedience compelled him to use it for the glory of God. In all things, he sought not his own glory, but the glory of his Divine Master.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O humble St. Anthony, who didst learn in the school of Christ to be meek and humble of heart, obtain for me the grace to conquer my pride. I am tempted by vanity and self-love, and I often seek the praise of men. Teach me to know myself, to embrace humiliations, and to rejoice when I am forgotten and despised. May I seek only to please God, who resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble. Amen.
Jour 6 : Day 6: The Virtue of Obedience
Méditation
Meditation
Let us consider the perfect Obedience of Saint Anthony. He entered the Franciscan Order to live a life of submission and self-denial. He obeyed his superiors with simplicity and joy, seeing in their commands the will of God Himself. He never questioned, never delayed, but fulfilled every duty with exactness and a cheerful spirit. His obedience was the foundation of his sanctity and the source of many graces.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O most obedient St. Anthony, who didst find true liberty in submitting thy will to God, intercede for me. My own will is a source of constant trouble and sin. Obtain for me a spirit of holy obedience to the commandments of God, the precepts of the Church, and the duties of my state in life. Help me to say in all things, ‘Not my will, but Thine, be done.’ May I, by following thy example of obedience on earth, attain to the glory of the saints in heaven. Amen.
Jour 7 : Day 7: The Virtue of Patience
Méditation
Meditation
Let us reflect upon the admirable Patience of Saint Anthony. Throughout his life, he endured many trials: bodily infirmities, the opposition of evil men, and the labours of his apostolic ministry. In all his sufferings, he never complained, but united them with the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. He saw the hand of God in every cross, and bore all with a serene and joyful heart, for the love of Him who suffered so much for us.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O model of patience, St. Anthony, look with compassion upon me in my afflictions. I am weak and fainthearted, and I murmur when the cross is laid upon me. Obtain for me the strength to bear my trials with patience and resignation to God’s holy will. Teach me to see the value of suffering when it is united with the sufferings of Christ. May my crosses detach me from the world and draw me closer to God, the comforter of the afflicted. Amen.
Jour 8 : Day 8: The Spirit of Penance
Méditation
Meditation
Let us consider the great spirit of Penance of Saint Anthony. Though innocent, he subjected his body to rigorous fasts, vigils, and disciplines. He knew that the path to heaven is narrow, and that the flesh must be brought into subjection to the spirit. He denied himself every comfort and convenience, embracing a life of poverty and hardship, in imitation of his crucified Lord. His penitential life was a sermon in action, calling sinners to repentance.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O great lover of the Cross, St. Anthony, who didst punish thy innocent body for the love of Christ, obtain for me a true spirit of penance. I have so often offended God by indulging my senses and passions. Inspire me with a sincere sorrow for my sins and a firm resolution to amend my life. Help me to practice mortification in my daily life, to deny myself, and to make reparation for my past offenses, that I may one day rejoice with thee in paradise. Amen.
Jour 9 : Day 9: Finder of What is Lost
Méditation
Meditation
Let us consider the singular privilege of Saint Anthony, for which he is known throughout the world as the ‘Finder of Lost Things.’ This power extends not only to temporal goods, but more importantly, to spiritual treasures that have been lost. How many souls, lost in the darkness of sin, has he brought back to the light of grace! How many have found, through his intercession, lost peace, lost faith, or lost devotion! Let us, on this last day, approach him with great confidence in his powerful help.
Prière du jour
Prayer
O powerful Wonder-Worker, St. Anthony, God has been pleased to grant thee the special power of restoring what is lost. I come to thee in my need, confident in thy goodness. Help me to find that which I have lost (mention it). But even more, I pray thee, help me to find again the grace of God if I have been so unhappy as to lose it by sin. Restore to me my lost fervor, my peace of conscience, and my devotion. Suffer me not to lose my soul, my greatest treasure, but guide me safely to the possession of God in eternity. Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer
To be said each day.
O glorious Wonder-Worker, St. Anthony, father of the poor and comforter of the afflicted, thou who didst come so lovingly to my aid and didst console me so greatly; behold me at thy feet to offer thee my heartfelt thanks. Accept my poor offering, and with it my promise, which I now renew, to live always in the love of Jesus and my neighbour.
Continue to protect me with thy powerful intercession, and obtain for me the final grace of dying in the friendship of God, that I may be able to enter into the kingdom of heaven and there sing with thee the everlasting mercies of God. Amen.
Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be…
V. St. Anthony, pray for us.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
