Novena to Saint Teresa of Calcutta: A School of Charity

Mother Teresa - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O God, who called Saint Teresa of Calcutta to be a witness of Your infinite love and to quench the thirst of Your Son on the Cross, we come before You in humility. Her life was a living Gospel, a testament that a life given entirely to You in the service of the poorest of the poor is a life of profound joy and meaning.

Through her powerful intercession, we ask for the grace to live the virtues of faith, hope, and charity with heroic fortitude. Grant us a heart pure and humble, a love that serves without counting the cost, and a faith that remains steadfast even in the darkness of trial. We place our intentions for this novena before You, especially for (mention your intentions here), confident that You will hear us through the prayers of Your faithful servant.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, you who promised to ‘light a light for those in darkness on earth,’ pray for us.

Jour 1 : To Quench the Thirst of Jesus

    Méditation

The entire life and mission of Saint Teresa of Calcutta was a response to a single cry from the Crucified Christ: ‘I thirst.’ She understood this not as a request for water, but as the cry of God’s infinite longing for the love of man, for the salvation of souls. This divine thirst is for our love, our holiness, our response to His grace. Mother Teresa taught that we can quench this thirst by accepting Jesus in our lives, by loving Him in the person of our neighbor, and by bringing souls to Him. Today, let us meditate on this profound mystery: God, the source of all being, makes Himself a beggar for our love. How do we respond to this cry in our daily lives?

    Prière du jour

O Saint Teresa of Calcutta, you who heard the thirst of Jesus and made it the light of your life, obtain for us the grace to hear His call. Help us to understand that every act of love, every prayer, every sacrifice offered for our neighbor quenches the infinite thirst of God. Teach us to live not for ourselves, but for Him who thirsts for our souls. Amen.

Jour 2 : Seeing Jesus in the Distressing Disguise of the Poor

    Méditation

Christ’s teaching in Matthew 25, ‘whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me,’ was the practical roadmap of Mother Teresa’s apostolate. For her, this was not a metaphor, but a sacramental reality. She saw, touched, and served Jesus Christ Himself in the broken bodies and wounded souls of the poorest of the poor. This was not mere humanitarianism; it was an act of profound faith and Eucharistic adoration extended into the streets. She taught that the poor are a gift to us, for in them we have the privilege of ministering directly to our Lord. Let us examine our own hearts: do we see Christ in the poor, the inconvenient, the forgotten, or do we turn away?

    Prière du jour

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, you who had the eyes of faith to recognize Jesus in the most abandoned, pray for us. Heal our spiritual blindness, that we may see beyond outward appearances to the divine image in every person. Grant us a generous heart, that we may not only give of our surplus, but give of ourselves, serving Christ in the poor with reverence and tender love. Amen.

Jour 3 : Faith in the Midst of Darkness

    Méditation

For nearly fifty years, Saint Teresa experienced a profound and painful interior trial, a ‘dark night of the soul’ where she felt the absence of God’s consolation. Yet, this was not a crisis of faith, but its ultimate test. In this darkness, she clung to the theological virtue of faith alone, choosing to believe in the God she could not feel. Her trial was a participation in the agony of Christ in Gethsemane and His cry of abandonment on the Cross. This demonstrates that holiness is not based on feelings, but on the resolute choice of the will to love and serve God, no matter the cost. Her darkness became a light for us, showing that faith is most heroic when it is most tried.

    Prière du jour

O heroic Saint Teresa, who walked in darkness sustained only by naked faith, intercede for all who undergo trials of the spirit. Teach us that our feelings are not the measure of God’s presence. Grant us the strength to persevere in prayer and duty when our hearts are dry and desolate, trusting that our suffering, united to Christ’s, has redemptive power. Amen.

Jour 4 : The Defense of the Unborn

    Méditation

Saint Teresa was an unflinching champion for the most vulnerable and defenseless of all human beings: the unborn child. She rightly identified abortion as ‘the greatest destroyer of peace today.’ She understood that a society that permits a mother to kill her own child in the womb has lost its moral compass and has declared war on God, the author of life. Her defense of life was not merely political, but profoundly theological. It stemmed from the recognition that each human being is created in the image and likeness of God, with an immortal soul, destined for eternity. To attack the unborn is to attack Christ Himself.

    Prière du jour

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, courageous defender of the unborn, inspire in us your zeal for the sanctity of all human life. Give us the courage to speak the truth in love and to work tirelessly for an end to the scourge of abortion. We pray for the conversion of those who promote the culture of death and for healing for all who have been wounded by it. Amen.

Jour 5 : The Fruit of Silence is Prayer

    Méditation

Mother Teresa’s famous spiritual ladder—’The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace’—reveals that all authentic Christian action is born from a deep interior life. The world is noisy and distracting, pulling us away from our center, which is Christ. She insisted on the necessity of silence, for it is in the silence of the heart that God speaks. Prayer is not a task to be completed, but a loving conversation with the One who loves us. From this encounter flows the faith to see God’s will, the love to embrace it, and the strength to carry it out in service.

    Prière du jour

O Saint Teresa, master of the interior life, teach us to value and seek silence. Help us to cultivate a spirit of prayer amidst the duties of our state in life. Obtain for us the grace to listen to God’s voice, that our actions may be rooted not in our own will, but in His, so that we may become instruments of His peace in the world. Amen.

Jour 6 : Love Begins at Home

    Méditation

While her mission took her to the slums of the world, Mother Teresa consistently taught that our own mission field is first and foremost our family. ‘Love begins at home,’ she would say. She warned against the ‘poverty of the West’—a poverty of loneliness, spiritual emptiness, and the breakdown of the family. The family is the Domestic Church, the first school of love, prayer, and virtue. It is within our own homes that we first learn to see Christ in others, to forgive, to sacrifice, and to love unconditionally. A failure to love those closest to us renders our service to the wider world hollow.

    Prière du jour

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, who cherished the sanctity of the family, we entrust our families to your intercession. Help us to make our homes sanctuaries of prayer, forgiveness, and love. Heal the divisions within our families and protect them from the attacks of the world. May we learn from you that true charity begins by serving our own with a joyful heart. Amen.

Jour 7 : A Pencil in the Hand of God

    Méditation

Humility and total trust in Divine Providence were the hallmarks of Mother Teresa’s spirituality. She saw herself as nothing more than ‘a little pencil in the hand of a writing God, who is sending a love letter to the world.’ This image reveals a profound theological truth: our role is one of complete docility and surrender to the will of God. We are not the authors of the work; we are merely the instruments. This frees us from the anxiety of results and the pride of success. Our only task is to be a sharp, usable pencil—to remain in a state of grace and obedience, allowing God to work through us as He wills. This is the essence of spiritual childhood.

    Prière du jour

O humble Saint Teresa, who allowed God to work great things through your littleness, obtain for us the grace of true humility. Free us from pride and the desire for control. Teach us to surrender our plans, our fears, and our very selves into the hands of our Heavenly Father, trusting that He will accomplish His perfect will in and through us. Amen.

Jour 8 : To Jesus through Mary

    Méditation

Like all the great saints, Mother Teresa had a tender and filial devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Rosary was her constant companion, a weapon in her spiritual battles. She saw in Mary the perfect model of her own vocation: to bring Christ to the world. As Mary carried Jesus in her womb to visit her cousin Elizabeth, the Missionaries of Charity were to carry Jesus, present in the Eucharist and in their hearts, to the spiritually and materially poor. Mary’s ‘Fiat’—’Let it be done to me according to your word’—was the model for Mother Teresa’s own surrender. To be close to Mary is to be led unfailingly to the Heart of Jesus.

    Prière du jour

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, devoted daughter of Mary, lead us to the arms of our Blessed Mother. Teach us to pray the Rosary with love and attention, meditating on the mysteries of our salvation. Ask the Immaculate Heart of Mary to form our hearts in the likeness of her Son’s, that we too may say ‘yes’ to God’s will in all things. Amen.

Jour 9 : The Same Jesus in the Eucharist and in the Poor

    Méditation

The source and summit of Mother Teresa’s entire life was the Holy Eucharist. She stated unequivocally that her work would be impossible without the strength she drew from daily Mass and Holy Communion, followed by an hour of Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. For her, there was an inseparable link between Jesus in the Host and Jesus in the poor. ‘In the Mass we have Jesus in the appearance of bread, while in the slums we see Christ and touch him in the broken bodies and in the abandoned children.’ Her love for the Eucharist fueled her love for the poor, and her service to the poor deepened her love for the Eucharist. One cannot exist without the other in an authentic Catholic life.

    Prière du jour

O Saint Teresa, adorer of the Eucharistic Lord, enkindle in our hearts a burning love for Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Grant us the grace to approach Holy Communion with greater fervor and to spend time in adoration. Help us to carry the strength and love we receive from the altar into the world, recognizing and serving the same Jesus in everyone we meet, especially the most needy. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

O Lord, we give You thanks for the gift of Saint Teresa of Calcutta to the Church and to the world. Her example challenges us to live our faith with greater integrity and love. May we, like her, find You in the silence of our hearts, in the mystery of the Eucharist, and in the face of our neighbor.

Grant the petitions we have made during this novena, if they be in accordance with Your most holy will. Amen.

    Our Father…

    Hail Mary…

    Glory Be…

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us.
