Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer for Each Day
O holy Priest of Ars, Saint John Marie Vianney, thou who wast a model of priestly virtue and a true shepherd of souls, I come before thee with great confidence. By thy heroic life of prayer, penance, and pastoral zeal, thou didst win countless souls for Christ. I implore thee now to look with compassion upon me and to obtain for me from God the graces I so earnestly seek in this novena.
(Here mention your intentions.)
Assist me to imitate thy virtues, especially thy profound humility, thy ardent love for God, and thy tender charity towards thy neighbor. Amen.
Jour 1 : Day 1: On the Virtue of Humility
Méditation
Let us consider the profound humility of the Curé of Ars. Though he was gifted with extraordinary graces and sought by thousands, he ever saw himself as a poor, ignorant sinner, unworthy of the sacred office he held. He would often say, ‘The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus,’ yet he deemed himself the most wretched of priests. This deep-seated humility was the foundation of all his other virtues, for he knew that all good came from God alone. He fled from honors and would have preferred a hidden life, but he submitted to God’s will, becoming a shining light for the whole world.
Prière du jour
O humble Saint John Vianney, who didst so perfectly understand that without God we are nothing, obtain for me the grace to despise the vain honors of this world and to know my own nothingness. Teach me to accept humiliations with patience and to seek only the glory of God in all things, that I may one day be exalted with thee in the kingdom of heaven. Amen.
Jour 2 : Day 2: On Love for the Holy Eucharist
Méditation
The life of Saint John Vianney was centered upon the Holy Eucharist. The altar was his place of rest, and the tabernacle was his constant refuge. He spent countless hours, both day and night, in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, drawing from this divine fount the strength for his arduous ministry. He would say to his flock, ‘He is there! The good God is there, waiting for us!’ His faith in the Real Presence was so lively that it inspired all who saw him to a greater reverence and love for Our Lord in the Host.
Prière du jour
O holy Curé of Ars, whose heart was a burning furnace of love for Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, enkindle in my soul a like devotion. Obtain for me a lively faith, a profound reverence, and a tender love for the Holy Eucharist. Grant that I may frequent this Sacrament of Love with fervor and profit, and that I may find in it, as thou didst, my strength, my consolation, and my joy. Amen.
Jour 3 : Day 3: On Filial Devotion to Mary
Méditation
Saint John Vianney held a most tender and childlike devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He consecrated his parish to her and placed all his labors under her protection. He called her ‘my oldest love’ and attributed all the graces of his ministry to her powerful intercession. He taught his people to have recourse to her in every need, assuring them that her heart was a source of all goodness, ever ready to help her children. He knew that the surest way to Jesus was through His holy Mother.
Prière du jour
O faithful servant of Mary, Saint John Vianney, who didst find in her a mother and a protectress, teach me to love her with a true filial heart. Obtain for me the grace of a constant and confident recourse to her in all my trials and temptations. May I, under her maternal guidance, walk securely in the path of virtue and arrive safely at the port of eternal salvation. Amen.
Jour 4 : Day 4: On Zeal for the Sacrament of Penance
Méditation
The confessional was the battlefield where the Curé of Ars fought to save souls. For more than forty years, he spent sixteen to eighteen hours a day reconciling sinners with God. He bore with heroic patience the stench, the heat, and the crushing fatigue, all for the love of souls. Gifted with the ability to read hearts, he gently but firmly led the most hardened sinners to repentance, showing them the infinite mercy of God. He called the confessional the place where God’s justice was disarmed and His mercy poured forth.
Prière du jour
O indefatigable confessor, Saint John Vianney, who didst spend thy life in the sacred tribunal of Penance, obtain for me a true sorrow for my sins and the grace to make a sincere and frequent confession. Inspire in me a great horror of sin and a firm purpose of amendment, that I may worthily receive the divine pardon and live henceforth in the grace and friendship of God. Amen.
Jour 5 : Day 5: On Zeal for the Salvation of Souls
Méditation
The single, all-consuming passion of Saint John Vianney’s life was the salvation of souls. ‘To win a soul for God,’ he would say, ‘is the greatest work of all.’ For this end, he prayed, he fasted, he wept, and he labored without ceasing. He endured calumnies, persecutions, and the direct assaults of the devil. He saw in every person a soul redeemed by the Precious Blood of Christ, and he could not bear the thought that even one should be lost. His burning zeal transformed the little village of Ars and drew multitudes from all over the world.
Prière du jour
O zealous apostle of souls, Saint John Vianney, who didst love thy neighbor with a heroic charity, enkindle in my heart a spark of that same fire. Grant that I may never be indifferent to the salvation of others, but may strive by my prayers, my words, and my example to lead them to God. Make me an instrument of His mercy in the world, for His greater glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.
Jour 6 : Day 6: On Patience in Sufferings
Méditation
The life of the holy Curé was marked by constant trial and suffering. He endured poverty, ill health, misunderstandings from his fellow clergy, and bitter calumnies. Most famously, he suffered for over thirty years from the direct and violent assaults of the devil, who sought to drive him from his post. Yet, in all these tribulations, he remained steadfast, patient, and united to the Cross of Christ. He understood that suffering, when borne with love, is a precious means of purification and a powerful tool for the conversion of sinners.
Prière du jour
O model of patience, Saint John Vianney, who didst bear thy many crosses with unshakable fortitude, obtain for me the grace to accept with Christian resignation the trials and sorrows of this life. Teach me to see the hand of God in all that befalls me and to unite my small sufferings with the Passion of our Lord, for my own sanctification and the redemption of the world. Amen.
Jour 7 : Day 7: On the Spirit of Penance
Méditation
Saint John Vianney was a man of severe penance. He practiced rigorous mortifications in his food, his sleep, and his comforts, not for his own sake, for he was a saint, but for the conversion of his sinners. He lived on a few boiled potatoes a day and slept but a few hours on a hard board. He knew that the flesh must be disciplined and that penance was necessary to make reparation for sin and to win graces from heaven. His life was a living sermon on the words of Our Lord: ‘Unless you shall do penance, you shall all likewise perish.’
Prière du jour
O great lover of the Cross, Saint John Vianney, who didst chastise thy body for the love of God and the salvation of souls, obtain for me a true spirit of penance. Grant me the courage to deny myself, to control my passions, and to perform acts of mortification in reparation for my sins and the sins of the world. May I learn from thee to embrace the cross daily and to follow our crucified Lord. Amen.
Jour 8 : Day 8: On the Dignity of the Priesthood
Méditation
No one understood the sublime dignity of the priesthood better than the Curé of Ars. ‘O, how great is the priest!’ he would exclaim. ‘If he realized what he is, he would die.’ He saw the priest as another Christ, an instrument in God’s hands to bring grace to the world through the sacraments. For this reason, he lived his own priesthood with the utmost reverence and fidelity. He is the patron of all parish priests, a shining example of what a true shepherd of souls ought to be.
Prière du jour
O glorious patron of priests, Saint John Vianney, I beseech thee to watch over all the priests of Holy Mother Church. Obtain for them the grace to be holy, zealous, and faithful ministers of the sacraments. Protect them from all dangers, strengthen them in their labors, and console them in their solitude. I pray especially for my own parish priest and for all priests who have ministered to me. May they, after thy example, lead their flocks to the eternal pastures of heaven. Amen.
Jour 9 : Day 9: On the Grace of Final Perseverance
Méditation
After a long life of heroic virtue and tireless labor, Saint John Vianney came to the end of his earthly pilgrimage. His death was as holy as his life. Surrounded by his sorrowing parishioners, he peacefully surrendered his soul to God, whom he had served so faithfully. He understood that the final and greatest grace is that of perseverance unto the end. His entire life was a preparation for that final moment, a constant striving to be found worthy to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Prière du jour
O holy Saint John Vianney, who didst crown a life of sanctity with a most holy death, obtain for me the supreme grace of final perseverance. Assist me in the last and decisive struggle of my life. When the hour of my death arrives, be thou at my side to protect me from the final assaults of the enemy, to strengthen my faith, and to present my soul, purified by the Blood of Christ, to the judgment seat of God. May I, through thy intercession, die in the arms of Jesus and Mary, and come to share in thy eternal glory. Amen.
