A Novena to Saint James the Greater, Apostle and Martyr

Saint Jacques (Major) - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer for Each Day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O glorious Apostle, Saint James, who for thy zeal and the force of thy faith didst merit the name of Son of Thunder, and wast the first of the Apostles to shed thy blood for Christ; obtain for us, we beseech thee, from our Lord Jesus Christ, the strength to be His faithful witnesses in word and deed. We present to thee our humble petitions during this novena, and we ask thee to lay them before the throne of God, for His greater glory and for our salvation. Amen.

Jour 1 : The Call of the Apostle

    Méditation

Let us consider how Saint James, being with his brother John mending his nets, was called by our Lord Jesus Christ. Without delay, he left his boat, his nets, and even his own father, to follow the Master. This prompt and unreserved response to the divine call is a shining example for us. How often hath God called us, and we have been deaf to His voice? How often have we preferred the trifles of this world to the treasures of His grace? Let us learn from Saint James to forsake all that hindereth our journey to God, and to follow Christ with a generous and undivided heart.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Saint James, who didst so readily obey the call of thy Saviour, obtain for me the grace to hear the voice of God in my own life, and to respond with a prompt and willing spirit. Help me to overcome all attachment to worldly things, that I may be free to follow Christ whithersoever He may lead me. Amen.

Jour 2 : The Son of Thunder

    Méditation

Let us consider the zealous and ardent spirit of Saint James, for which he, with his brother, received from our Lord the name Boanerges, which is, ‘The sons of thunder.’ This holy fire, though at first mingled with the imperfection of human passion, was a testament to his immense love for his Master. He could not bear any slight against Jesus, and his heart burned with a desire for the glory of God. This same zeal, when purified by grace, made him a tireless preacher of the Gospel and a fearless witness unto death.

    Prière du jour

O Blessed Apostle, Son of Thunder, enkindle in my heart a spark of thy holy zeal. Grant that I may have a fervent love for Jesus Christ and a burning desire for the salvation of souls. Purify my intentions, that all my actions may be directed to the greater glory of God, and not to my own honour. Amen.

Jour 3 : Witness to the Transfiguration

    Méditation

Let us consider how Saint James was one of the three Apostles chosen by our Lord to be a witness of His Transfiguration upon Mount Tabor. He was granted a glimpse of the celestial glory of the Son of God, to strengthen his faith for the terrible trial of the Passion. This singular privilege shows the great esteem in which our Lord held him. Let us reflect that we too, through faith, can behold the glory of God, and that the hope of heaven is given to us as a light to guide us through the darkness of this life.

    Prière du jour

O great Saint James, who didst behold the glory of the transfigured Christ, strengthen my faith in His divinity. Obtain for me a lively hope in the promises of eternal life, that the vision of heavenly glory may encourage me to bear my daily crosses with patience and to persevere in the service of God unto the end. Amen.

Jour 4 : Witness to the Agony in the Garden

    Méditation

Let us consider how Saint James, who was a witness to Christ’s glory, was also chosen to be a witness to His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was invited to watch and pray with our Lord in His hour of deepest sorrow. Though he, with Peter and John, was overcome by sleep, this intimate sharing in the suffering of the Saviour prepared him for his own future martyrdom. Let us learn from this mystery to remain close to our Lord in His afflictions, especially as He suffers in His Mystical Body, the Church, and in the poor and afflicted.

    Prière du jour

O faithful Apostle Saint James, who wast near to Jesus in His agony, obtain for me the grace of compassion. Teach me to watch and pray with my suffering Lord, to console His Sacred Heart by my fidelity, and to see His face in all who are in sorrow and distress. May I never abandon Him in the time of trial. Amen.

Jour 5 : The Apostolic Mission

    Méditation

Let us consider the apostolic labours of Saint James after the Ascension of our Lord. Sacred tradition tells us that he journeyed to the farthest ends of the Roman world, even to Spain, to preach the Gospel of salvation. He faced immense difficulties, discouragement, and the hardness of men’s hearts, yet he persevered in his mission, sustained by the love of Christ. He is a model for all who are called to spread the Faith, showing that the seed of the Word, though sown in tears, will bear fruit in God’s own time.

    Prière du jour

O tireless preacher of the Gospel, Saint James, obtain for me an apostolic spirit. Fill me with a desire to make Jesus Christ known and loved by all. Grant me the courage and perseverance to bear witness to my faith in my daily life, by my words and by my example, that I may be an instrument of God’s grace for others. Amen.

    Jour 6 : The Pilgrim’s Patron

    Méditation

Let us consider Saint James as the great patron of pilgrims. For centuries, countless faithful have journeyed to his tomb in Compostela, seeking pardon for their sins and strength for their souls. This earthly pilgrimage is an image of our whole life, which is a journey towards our true home in heaven. We are all pilgrims and sojourners upon the earth, and we must not become attached to the things of this world, but keep our eyes fixed on our eternal destination.

    Prière du jour

O holy pilgrim, Saint James, be my guide and protector on the journey of my life. Keep me from straying from the path of God’s commandments. Protect me from the dangers of soul and body, and lead me safely to the end of my pilgrimage, that I may come at last to the heavenly Jerusalem, there to praise God with thee for ever. Amen.

Jour 7 : Courage in Persecution

    Méditation

Let us consider the courage of Saint James when he returned to Jerusalem. He preached the Resurrection of Christ with such boldness and power that he confounded the enemies of the Church. He feared not the threats of King Herod nor the malice of the scribes. His love for his Master had cast out all fear. He knew that to live is Christ, and to die is gain. This fortitude is a necessary virtue for every true Christian, who must be prepared to profess his faith openly, even when it brings contempt or persecution.

    Prière du jour

O most courageous Apostle, Saint James, who didst not shrink from confessing Christ before His enemies, obtain for me the gift of fortitude. Banish from my heart all human respect and cowardice, that I may never be ashamed of the Gospel. Grant that I may be a valiant soldier of Christ in the midst of a world that is hostile to His truth. Amen.

Jour 8 : The First Apostolic Martyr

    Méditation

Let us consider the glorious martyrdom of Saint James. The Acts of the Apostles tells us that King Herod Agrippa ‘killed James the brother of John with the sword.’ He was the first of the holy Apostles to seal his testimony with his blood, thus perfectly imitating the Master whom he loved. He drank of the chalice of which the Lord had spoken, and received the crown of life promised to those who are faithful unto death. His martyrdom was not an end, but a triumphant entry into eternal glory.

    Prière du jour

O invincible Martyr, Saint James, who didst give thy life for the love of Jesus Christ, obtain for me the grace of final perseverance. Grant that I may so live that I may be found worthy to suffer for the Faith, and if it be God’s will, to die in His grace, fortified by the Sacraments of the Church, and with the holy names of Jesus and Mary upon my lips. Amen.

Jour 9 : The Heavenly Patron

    Méditation

Let us consider the glory of Saint James in heaven. Having fought the good fight, and having finished his course, he now reigns with Christ in the kingdom of light and peace. From his throne in heaven, he does not forget the needs of the Church on earth. He is a powerful intercessor and a loving patron to all who invoke his aid. Let us, therefore, approach him with great confidence, laying before him all our needs, both spiritual and temporal, certain that he will obtain for us from God every grace necessary for our salvation.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Saint James, triumphant in heaven, look down with pity upon us, thy devoted clients, who are still struggling in this vale of tears. We place all our confidence in thy powerful intercession. We commend to thee especially the intention of this novena (here mention your request). Present our petitions to our Lord Jesus Christ, and obtain for us the grace to live and die in His holy love. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer for Each Day

O glorious Apostle, Saint James, who by reason of thy fervent and generous heart, wast chosen by Jesus to be a witness of His glory on Mount Tabor, and of His agony in Gethsemane; thou, whose name is a symbol of pilgrimage and of the search for God; obtain for us from our Lord the strength and the consolation we need in the midst of the trials of this life. Support us in our resolutions, strengthen us in our virtues, and be our companion on the path that leads to heaven. Through thy intercession, may we one day enjoy the presence of God in the company of all the Saints. Amen.

Recite one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be.
