Novena to Saint James the Greater, Apostle of Compostela

Santiago (Compostella) - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer for Each Day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

O glorious Apostle, Saint James, chosen by our Lord to be one of His first disciples, we come before thee with humble hearts to implore thy powerful intercession. Obtain for us the grace to make this novena with piety and devotion, that we may merit the favours we seek, if they be for the greater glory of God and the salvation of our souls. Amen.

Jour 1 : Day 1: The Call of the Apostle

    Méditation

Let us consider how Saint James, with his brother John, was mending his nets by the Sea of Galilee when our Lord passed by. Jesus saw them and called them, saying, ‘Follow me.’ Immediately, leaving their nets and their father, they followed Him. What a prompt and generous response! They forsook all things—their trade, their home, their family—to answer the call of the Divine Master. This immediate obedience is a model for us. How often does Christ call us through the inspirations of grace, the duties of our state, or the voice of His Church? And how often are we slow to respond, entangled in the nets of worldly cares and attachments?

    Prière du jour

O blessed Saint James, who didst so readily leave all to follow Christ, obtain for us the grace to hear and obey the calls of God in our own lives. Help us to detach our hearts from the perishable things of this world, that we may follow our Lord with undivided love and serve Him with perfect fidelity unto death. Amen.

Jour 2 : Day 2: The Witness to the Transfiguration

    Méditation

Our Lord chose but three disciples to accompany Him to Mount Tabor: Peter, James, and John. There, He was transfigured before them; His face did shine as the sun, and His garments became white as snow. Saint James was granted this sublime vision of Christ’s divinity to strengthen his faith for the trials to come. This privilege was a foretaste of the glory of heaven, a reward for his fidelity. Let us reflect that in our own moments of prayer and communion with God, we too are given glimpses of His glory, strengthening us for our journey. Let us seek these moments of grace upon the ‘mountain’ of prayer, far from the distractions of the world below.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Saint James, who wast privileged to behold the divine splendour of our transfigured Lord, pray for us that our faith may be strengthened. Obtain for us a love for prayer and contemplation, that in conversing with God, we may be fortified against all temptations and trials, and ever keep our eyes fixed on the eternal glory that awaits us. Amen.

Jour 3 : Day 3: The Son of Thunder

    Méditation

Jesus gave to James and his brother John the name ‘Boanerges,’ which is, ‘the sons of thunder.’ This name signifies their fiery zeal and impetuous nature. We see this when they wished to call down fire from heaven upon a Samaritan village that would not receive our Lord. Though this zeal was yet untempered by charity, Christ would channel it into a powerful force for the Gospel. Let us examine our own zeal. Is it for the glory of God, or is it mixed with pride and impatience? Let us ask Saint James to help us purify our intentions, so that our ardour may be a holy fire, consuming all that is opposed to God’s will and spreading the warmth of His love.

    Prière du jour

O zealous Saint James, Son of Thunder, whose heart burned with love for the Master, obtain for us a share of thy holy fire. Purify our hearts of all earthly passion and self-love, that we may serve God with a pure and fervent spirit, seeking only His honour and the salvation of souls. Amen.

Jour 4 : Day 4: The Witness to the Agony in the Garden

    Méditation

As Saint James was a witness to Christ’s glory on Tabor, so too was he a witness to His agony in Gethsemane. He was one of the three chosen to be near our Lord in His hour of deepest sorrow. ‘My soul is sorrowful even unto death,’ Jesus said, ‘stay you here and watch with me.’ Yet, overcome by weariness, James and the others slept. This moment reveals the weakness of human nature, even in the greatest of saints. It teaches us the necessity of constant vigilance and prayer, lest we too fall asleep when our Lord asks us to watch with Him in the sufferings of our neighbours and in the trials of our own lives.

    Prière du jour

O faithful Saint James, who didst share in the sorrow of our Lord’s agony, obtain for us the grace of perseverance in prayer. Forgive us for the times we have slept when we should have watched. Teach us to comfort the sorrowful heart of Jesus by our fidelity, our compassion for the suffering, and our patient endurance of our own crosses. Amen.

Jour 5 : Day 5: The Evangelist in Spain

    Méditation

Tradition holds that after Pentecost, Saint James journeyed to the far-off lands of Spain to preach the Gospel. There he laboured with great zeal, planting the seeds of the faith that would one day flourish so mightily. His mission was fraught with hardship and met with little initial success, yet he did not despair. He trusted in the power of God, who can bring forth a great harvest from a single seed. This apostolic journey reminds us that we are all called to be evangelists in our own state of life. We must not be discouraged by apparent failure, but sow the seeds of truth and love with patience and trust in God’s providence.

    Prière du jour

O apostolic Saint James, who didst carry the light of the Gospel to the ends of the earth, enkindle in our hearts a missionary zeal. Grant us the courage to bear witness to Christ in our words and deeds, and the perseverance to labour for the salvation of souls, trusting not in our own strength, but in the grace of God. Amen.

Jour 6 : Day 6: The Pillar of the Church

    Méditation

Saint Paul refers to James, along with Peter and John, as one of the ‘pillars’ of the Church in Jerusalem. His authority, his wisdom, and his steadfast faith were a foundation upon which the early Christian community was built. He was a leader who governed not by worldly power, but by the example of his holiness and his unwavering commitment to the truth received from Christ. Let us pray for the pillars of the Church today—our Holy Father, the bishops, and priests—that they may be strengthened by the example of Saint James. And let us strive to be firm pillars in our own families and communities, supporting others by the strength of our faith and the integrity of our lives.

    Prière du jour

O mighty Saint James, pillar of the nascent Church, uphold the Church of our day with thy powerful prayers. Strengthen our Holy Father, our bishops, and all the clergy. Make us also to be strong and living stones in the spiritual edifice of the Church, firmly grounded in faith, hope, and charity. Amen.

Jour 7 : Day 7: The First Apostle Martyr

    Méditation

The Acts of the Apostles tells us that King Herod ‘killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.’ He was the first of the twelve to give his life for Christ, sealing his testimony with his own blood. He who had once asked for a place of honour in Christ’s kingdom received it not on an earthly throne, but by drinking the chalice of suffering that our Lord had foretold. His martyrdom is the ultimate proof of his love and the crowning of his apostolic life. It teaches us that the Christian life is a battle, and that to be a true disciple is to be ready to sacrifice everything, even life itself, for the love of our Saviour.

    Prière du jour

O courageous Martyr, Saint James, who didst not shrink from the sword, but didst joyfully give thy life for thy Lord, obtain for us a martyr’s spirit. Grant that we may have the courage to profess our faith openly, to fight against sin in our lives, and to endure all trials and persecutions for the sake of Christ, so that we may one day share in thy glorious crown. Amen.

Jour 8 : Day 8: The Patron of Pilgrims

    Méditation

For centuries, the faithful have journeyed as pilgrims to the great shrine of Santiago de Compostela, where the sacred relics of Saint James are venerated. This pilgrimage is a figure of our own journey through this life toward our heavenly homeland. The road is long, the difficulties are many, and we are often weary. But Saint James, the patron of pilgrims, walks with us. He encourages us, protects us from dangers, and points us toward our final destination: the eternal embrace of God. Let us place our spiritual pilgrimage under his patronage, confident that he will guide our steps safely to the goal.

    Prière du jour

O holy pilgrim, Saint James, who dost guide and protect all who journey in faith, be our companion on the path of life. Defend us from the perils of soul and body. When we are weary, give us strength; when we lose our way, show us the path; and lead us safely to the heavenly Jerusalem, where we may rest with thee forever in the presence of God. Amen.

Jour 9 : Day 9: The Intercessor in Heaven

    Méditation

Having completed his earthly course and won the crown of glory, Saint James now reigns with Christ in heaven. From his throne, he does not forget us, his brethren still struggling in this vale of tears. His power is great with God, and his charity is ever active on our behalf. He is a powerful friend and intercessor for all who invoke him with confidence. As we conclude this novena, let us renew our trust in his patronage. Let us present to him our needs, our fears, and our hopes, certain that he will hear our prayers and obtain for us from God all the graces necessary for our salvation and for our present needs.

    Prière du jour

O most glorious Saint James, who now dost enjoy the reward of thy labours in heaven, look down with compassion upon us. We have sought thy help for nine days, and we are confident in thy powerful intercession. Present our petitions to our Lord Jesus Christ, and obtain for us the grace to live and die in His holy love, that we may one day be united with thee and all the saints in everlasting bliss. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer for Each Day

O great Saint James, who didst prove thy loyalty to Christ by thy martyrdom, and whose blessed relics have drawn countless pilgrims to thy shrine at Compostela; look down with pity upon us, thy devoted servants. Be our guide and protector in the pilgrimage of this life. Strengthen us in our faith, enkindle our hope, and make us burn with divine charity, that, after the trials of this earthly sojourn, we may be worthy to join thee in the glories of our heavenly home.

We beseech thee, O glorious Apostle, to present our petitions to the throne of the Most High. (Pause and reflect on your intentions)

Our Father, Who art in heaven…
    Hail Mary, full of grace…
    Glory be to the Father…

Saint James the Greater, pray for us.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
