Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe

    Guadalupe - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

O Most Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, who didst deign to appear to the humble Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac as a sign of thy maternal love for the peoples of the New World, we come before thee with hearts full of confidence and hope. As thou didst promise to hear our supplications, to dry our tears, and to give us consolation and relief, so now we implore thy assistance in our necessities. (Here mention your petitions.) We are certain that thou wilt not despise our prayers, but wilt graciously hear and answer them. Amen.

Jour 1 : Day 1: The Humility of the Apparition

    Méditation

Let us consider how the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, chose for her ambassador a humble and lowly man, the blessed Juan Diego. She appeared to him not in a palace, but upon the barren hill of Tepeyac, showing that God resists the proud and gives His grace to the humble. By this choice, Our Lady teaches us that the surest path to the heart of her Son is through a sincere and profound humility, which acknowledges our own nothingness and God’s infinite greatness. Let us examine our own hearts, and root out all pride, that we may be worthy to receive the graces she desires to bestow upon us.

    Prière du jour

O most humble Virgin of Guadalupe, who didst not disdain to appear to the least of thy children, obtain for us from thy Divine Son the grace of a true and lasting humility. Teach us to love obscurity and to seek not the praise of men, but only the glory of God. May we, like Saint Juan Diego, become simple and docile instruments in thy hands for the salvation of souls. Amen.

Jour 2 : Day 2: The Message of Consolation

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the sweet and consoling words which the Blessed Virgin spoke to her faithful servant, Juan Diego, when he was in great distress: “Let not your heart be disturbed. Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need anything more?” These words were not spoken for him alone, but for all who fly to her protection. In all our trials, anxieties, and sorrows, let us hear Our Lady speaking these same words to our own souls, and let us rest with perfect confidence in her maternal care.

    Prière du jour

O Mother of Mercy, Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose words are a balm to the afflicted soul, we come to thee in our tribulations. Speak to our hearts as thou didst speak to Juan Diego. Let us feel the comfort of thy presence and the security of thy protection, so that, freed from all anxiety, we may serve thy Son with a peaceful and joyful heart. Amen.

Jour 3 : Day 3: Perseverance in Faith

    Méditation

Let us consider the trial of faith which Saint Juan Diego endured when the Bishop demanded a sign. Though he had seen the Queen of Heaven and heard her voice, his word was met with doubt. Yet, he did not despair, nor did he disobey. He returned to Our Lady with simplicity and perseverance, trusting completely in her. This teaches us that our faith will often be tested. We must not be discouraged by obstacles or the disbelief of others, but must persevere in prayer and in doing the will of God, confident that He will bring His work to fruition in His own time and manner.

    Prière du jour

O Virgin most faithful, Our Lady of Guadalupe, who didst reward the perseverance of thy humble messenger, strengthen our faith in times of trial. Grant us the grace to persevere in prayer and good works, even when we see no results. May we never be swayed by human respect or discouragement, but trust always in thy promise and in the power of God. Amen.

Jour 4 : Day 4: The Miraculous Image

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the miraculous image of Our Lady, imprinted upon the coarse tilma of Saint Juan Diego. This sacred image, not made by human hands, has remained perfectly preserved for centuries, a standing miracle for all to see. It is a testament to the truth of the apparitions and a perpetual catechism, revealing heavenly truths through its sacred symbols. In this image, Mary shows herself to us, her face full of compassion and tenderness, drawing all her children to her Son, Jesus Christ, whom she bears within her womb.

    Prière du jour

O Holy Mary of Guadalupe, whose miraculous image is a testament of thy love for us, we venerate this sacred portrait. May the contemplation of thy heavenly beauty and maternal compassion draw our hearts away from the vanity of the world and fix them on the eternal truths of Heaven. As thy image was imprinted on the tilma, so imprint upon our souls the virtues of thy Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Jour 5 : Day 5: The Woman Clothed with the Sun

    Méditation

Let us consider the rich symbolism of the sacred image. Our Lady stands before the sun, for she is the “Woman clothed with the sun” who brings us Christ, the true Sun of Justice. She stands upon the crescent moon, showing her triumph over the ancient pagan deities. The stars on her mantle proclaim her Queen of Heaven. The angel at her feet signifies her royal dignity and her role as messenger from God. Every detail of the image spoke to the native peoples, revealing the truths of the Catholic Faith in a language they could understand, and leading them from the darkness of idolatry to the light of Christ.

    Prière du jour

O Star of the New Evangelization, Our Lady of Guadalupe, thy sacred image was a divine sermon that converted millions. We beseech thee, enlighten the minds of all who live in the darkness of error and sin. Dispel the shadows of idolatry, whether ancient or modern, and lead all nations to the one true God and His Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Jour 6 : Day 6: Mary, Health of the Sick

    Méditation

Let us consider the healing of Juan Bernardino, the uncle of Saint Juan Diego. While Juan Diego was occupied with the Bishop’s requests, his uncle lay dying. It was in this moment of great sorrow that Our Lady intervened, appearing to Juan Bernardino, restoring him to perfect health, and revealing her title: “the ever Virgin, Holy Mary of Guadalupe.” This first miracle shows her powerful intercession as “Health of the Sick.” She is not only the physician of our souls, but also a compassionate mother who cares for our bodily infirmities, when it is for our spiritual good.

    Prière du jour

O Comforter of the Afflicted, Health of the Sick, Holy Mary of Guadalupe, we commend to thy loving care all who are suffering in body or in soul. As thou didst heal Juan Bernardino, deign to visit and console our sick brethren. Grant them patience in their sufferings, and if it be God’s will, restore them to health. Above all, obtain for us the healing of our souls from the sickness of sin. Amen.

Jour 7 : Day 7: The Roses of Tepeyac

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the sign which Our Lady gave to the Bishop: beautiful Castilian roses, blooming out of season on a frozen, barren hilltop. This miracle shows that with God, nothing is impossible. From the barren soil of our souls, He can bring forth the fragrant blossoms of virtue and grace, if only we entrust ourselves to the care of the Blessed Virgin. The roses, gathered in Juan Diego’s tilma, were not only a proof for the Bishop, but a symbol of the graces that Mary gathers for us and presents to God on our behalf.

    Prière du jour

O Mystical Rose, Our Lady of Guadalupe, who dost make the desert of our lives bloom with heavenly graces, we offer thee our poor hearts. Pluck from them the thorns of vice and plant in them the sweet-smelling roses of virtue. May our lives, through thy intercession, give forth a pleasing fragrance to God, and may we one day be gathered into the eternal garden of paradise. Amen.

Jour 8 : Day 8: Empress of the Americas

    Méditation

Let us consider how the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe marked the spiritual birth of the nations of the New World. Her coming put an end to the brutal pagan rites and brought about the conversion of millions to the Catholic Faith. She united peoples of different races and cultures under her one maternal mantle, making them one family in Christ. Pope Pius XII declared her “Empress of the Americas,” recognizing her special patronage and her reign over the hearts of the faithful in these lands. Let us renew our consecration to her, our Queen and Mother.

    Prière du jour

O Empress of the Americas, Our Lady of Guadalupe, we place our nations under thy powerful protection. Defend them from all evil, preserve the faith of thy children, and bring back those who have strayed. Reign in our hearts, in our families, in our societies, and in our laws, so that all the Americas may be truly one nation under God, united in faith, hope, and charity. Amen.

Jour 9 : Day 9: Protectress of the Unborn

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the black sash which Our Lady wears in the sacred image. In the culture of the Aztecs, this was a sign of pregnancy. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the great sign of the Incarnation, for she bears in her immaculate womb Jesus Christ, the Author of Life. In a world afflicted by the culture of death, her image is a powerful proclamation of the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception. She is the supreme Protectress of the unborn, standing as a shield against the evil of abortion and as a beacon of hope for a new culture of life.

    Prière du jour

O Protectress of the Unborn, Our Lady of Guadalupe, who didst bear in thy womb the Savior of the world, we entrust to thy maternal care all unborn children. Defend them from the horror of abortion. Convert the hearts of those who fail to see the sanctity of life. Comfort the mothers and fathers who mourn their lost children. Build in our world a civilization of life and love, where every child is welcomed as a gift from God. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer

Remember, O most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in thy celestial apparitions on the mount of Tepeyac, thou didst promise to show thy pity and compassion to all who, loving and trusting thee, seek thy help and call upon thee in their necessities and afflictions. Thou didst promise to hearken to our supplications, to dry our tears and to give us consolation and relief. Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Mary, ever Virgin Mother of the True God! Though grieving under the weight of our sins, we come to prostrate ourselves in thy august presence, certain that thou wilt deign to fulfill thy merciful promises. We are thine, and our only desire is to be so. O Holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer us. Amen.

(Recite four Hail Marys in honor of the four apparitions to Saint Juan Diego.)

    Hail Mary… (x4)

    Glory Be… (x1)
