Novena to Mary, Undoer of Knots

Novena to Mary who Undoes Knots - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

Opening Prayer to be said each day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

My God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

(It is customary to pray the first three decades of the Rosary)

    Supplication

Holy Mary, full of God’s presence during the days of your life, you accepted with full humility the Father’s will, and the Devil was never able to entangle you with his confusion. Once with your Son you interceded for our difficulties, and, with all simplicity and patience, you gave us an example of how to untangle the knots of our lives. And by remaining forever Our Mother, you put in order and make clear the ties that link us to the Lord.

Holy Mother, Mother of God and our Mother, to you who untie with a motherly heart the knots of our life, I fly to you to place the ribbon of my life in your hands.

(Here, mention the specific knot(s) for which you are praying).

Jour 1 : The First Day: Untying the Knots of Disobedience

    Méditation

Dearest Mother, we begin this novena by contemplating the very first knot, the knot of disobedience tied by our mother Eve in the garden. By her pride and lack of trust, she tied a knot of sin and exile for all her children. But the Father, in His infinite mercy, promised a new Eve, a woman whose obedience would untie that which was tied. Thou, O Mary, art that woman. Thy humble “Fiat”—“Be it done unto me according to thy word”—was the beginning of our salvation. Thy perfect obedience to the will of God began to untangle the ancient curse and opened the gates of Paradise anew.

Let us reflect upon the knots in our own lives caused by our pride and our disobedience to God’s holy will. How often have we preferred our own judgment to His commandments, our own desires to His divine plan? These are the knots that bind us, that separate us from the font of all grace.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, whose perfect obedience crushed the head of the ancient serpent, look upon the knots of disobedience in my soul. I present to thee this day the knot of (mention your specific intention here), which is a fruit of my own sin. Teach me, O Blessed Mother, to say “yes” to God, even when I do not understand. By thy powerful intercession, obtain for me the grace of a humble and obedient heart, that I may follow thy Son, Jesus Christ, without reserve. Amen.

Jour 2 : The Second Day: Untying the Knots of Family Strife

    Méditation

Holy Mother, today we turn our gaze to the Holy Family of Nazareth. Even there, where God dwelt among men, difficulties arose. We think of the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the temple. Yet, through faith and love, every trial became a means of deeper union with God. The knots of family life—misunderstandings, resentments, divisions, the pain of seeing a loved one stray from the faith—are often the most painful. Thou, O Mary, who didst live in the heart of the Holy Family, understandest these sorrows perfectly.

Thou art the Queen of the Home. Thou knowest the importance of charity, patience, and forgiveness in family life. We bring to thee today the tangled ribbons of our family relationships, asking thee to smooth them with thy gentle hands.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, Queen of Peace, I entrust to thee today the knots that afflict my family. I pray for (mention your specific family intention). Intercede for us, that our hearts may be softened, that forgiveness may flow freely, and that the love of thy Son may reign in our home. May our family become a reflection of thine own, a sanctuary of peace, prayer, and love. Amen.

Jour 3 : The Third Day: Untying the Knots of Suffering and Sickness

    Méditation

O Mother of Sorrows, who stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross, thy heart was pierced by a sword of grief as thou didst behold thy Son’s suffering. Thou knowest the knot of human pain, of sickness, of mourning, of anguish. So often we feel abandoned in our trials, lost in a sea of suffering. We struggle to understand why God permits these crosses in our lives. In these moments, the knot of despair can tighten around our hearts.

But thou, O Mary, didst unite thy sufferings perfectly to those of thy Son for the salvation of the world. Thou teachest us that our pain, when offered to God, can become a source of immense grace for ourselves and for others. Thou art the Health of the Sick and the Comforter of the Afflicted.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, Comforter of the Afflicted, I place in thy hands the knot of my suffering and the sufferings of all those for whom I pray, especially (mention your specific intention). Teach me to bear my cross with patience and to unite my pains to the Passion of thy Son. Obtain for me and for all who suffer, strength in trial, comfort in sorrow, and, if it be God’s will, healing of mind and body. Amen.

Jour 4 : The Fourth Day: Untying the Knots of Pride and Resentment

    Méditation

Most humble Mary, thy soul magnified the Lord in the glorious canticle of the Magnificat. Thou didst attribute all thy greatness to Him who is mighty. The opposite of thy humility is the knot of pride, the root of all sin. This knot makes us self-reliant, closing our hearts to God’s grace. It is pride that gives birth to resentment, the refusal to forgive, the holding of grudges. This bitter knot poisons our soul and severs the bonds of charity with our neighbor.

Thy Son taught us to forgive, as we are forgiven by our Father in heaven. But our pride often makes this commandment seem impossible. We look to thee, O Virgin Most Merciful, to untie this stubborn knot within us.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, Mirror of Humility, I confess to thee my pride and the resentment I hold in my heart against (mention the person or situation). I desire to forgive, but I am weak. Untie this knot of bitterness in my soul. Obtain for me a humble and contrite heart, like thine own, that I may be able to forgive from the heart and so receive the boundless mercy of thy Son. Amen.

Jour 5 : The Fifth Day: Untying the Knots of Sinful Habits and Addictions

    Méditation

O Mary, Refuge of Sinners, we contemplate today the knots of our sinful habits and addictions. These are the chains that bind our will and enslave us to passions and vices. Whether it be a weakness of the flesh, a dependence on worldly things, or a recurring sin we cannot seem to conquer, these knots rob us of our freedom as children of God. They create a tangled mess in our lives, leading us away from the path of virtue and into darkness.

We know that by our own strength, we are powerless to break these chains. But we also know that with God, all things are possible. We fly to thy patronage, O powerful Virgin, for thou art the terror of demons and the help of Christians. In thy pure hands, no knot of sin can remain tied.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, Refuge of Sinners, look with pity upon my struggle with (mention the specific habit or addiction). I am bound by this knot and cannot free myself. I place this chain in thy hands. Crush the head of the serpent who seeks to keep me enslaved. Obtain for me the grace of true repentance, the strength to persevere in the fight, and the final victory over this sin through the merits of thy Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Jour 6 : The Sixth Day: Untying the Knots of Work and Financial Anxiety

    Méditation

Blessed Mother, thou who didst live a life of poverty and simple labor in Nazareth, thou understandest the anxieties that weigh upon us concerning our material needs. The knot of unemployment, of financial debt, of uncertainty about the future—these can suffocate our hope and distract us from the one thing necessary: seeking the Kingdom of God. We worry and are anxious about many things, forgetting the words of thy Son, who told us to look at the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, for our Heavenly Father knows all that we need.

We turn to thee, O Mary, and to thy most chaste spouse, Saint Joseph the Worker, asking you to untie these knots of worldly care and to help us place our trust entirely in Divine Providence.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, and our good father Saint Joseph, I place in your hands all my worries about work and finances. I entrust to you the knot of (mention your specific material or work-related need). Teach me to labor with diligence and honesty, but to trust not in my own efforts alone, but in the loving care of God our Father. Obtain for me the grace to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, confident that all else will be added unto me. Amen.

Jour 7 : The Seventh Day: Untying the Knots of Fear and Anguish

    Méditation

O Virgin Most Faithful, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to thee, his first words were, “Hail, full of grace,” followed by the counsel, “Be not afraid.” Fear is a knot that paralyzes the soul. It can be a fear of the future, a fear of what others think, a fear of failure, or a deep-seated anguish that robs us of our peace. This knot prevents us from responding generously to God’s call. It makes us shrink back from the duties of our state in life and from acts of heroic charity.

Thou, O Mary, didst live in perfect trust and abandonment to God. Thy heart was free from all anxious fear because it was filled with love. The perfect love of God, which thou didst possess so completely, casts out all fear.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, my courageous Mother, take from my heart the knot of fear that binds me. I am afraid of (mention your specific fear). Free me from this anguish that I may run with vigor in the way of God’s commandments. Obtain for me the gift of fortitude and a boundless confidence in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, so that I may say with the psalmist, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” Amen.

Jour 8 : The Eighth Day: Untying the Knots of Sadness and Despair

    Méditation

Mary, Cause of Our Joy, thy soul was a garden of heavenly peace because it was perfectly united to the will of God. Yet our world is a valley of tears, and often our hearts are weighed down by the knot of sadness, discouragement, or even despair. This darkness can come from our own sins, from the trials of life, or from the attacks of the enemy who seeks to convince us that we are forgotten by God. This knot of desolation is one of the most dangerous, for it chokes our faith and hope.

But thou, O Mother, art the Star of the Sea, who shines in the darkness of the storm to guide us safely to the harbor of thy Son. A single glance from thine eyes of mercy is enough to restore hope to the most afflicted soul.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, Morning Star, I give to thee the knot of despair and sadness that darkens my soul. I feel lost and my hope is weak. I entrust this darkness to thee, who art the Gate of Heaven. Fill my heart with a supernatural joy that the world cannot give. Remind me of the Father’s infinite love and the promise of eternal life, that I may persevere with hope until I see thee face to face in glory. Amen.

Jour 9 : The Ninth Day: The Triumph of a Mother’s Heart

    Méditation

O Glorious Queen, assumed into Heaven and crowned Queen of all creation, today we contemplate thy triumph. All the knots of earthly life—suffering, sorrow, persecution, and death—have been undone for thee. Thou reignest now with thy Son in glory, and from thy throne, thou dost exercise thy power as Mediatrix of all graces. Thy heart, which once was pierced with sorrow, now overflows with the joy of heaven, a joy thou desirest to share with all thy children.

On this final day of our novena, we come before thee with hearts full of gratitude and hope. We have placed the tangled knots of our lives into thy motherly hands, confident that thou hast already begun the work of untying them according to the will of God. We see in thy triumph the promise of our own future victory over sin and death.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Undoer of Knots, my Queen and my Mother, I thank thee for thy intercession throughout this novena. I renew the consecration of my entire being to thee. I place the ribbon of my life, with all its remaining knots, definitively in thy holy hands. Guide me, protect me, and lead me every day of my life until I am with thee in Paradise, where all knots will be undone forever and we shall see God face to face. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exist in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exists in my life. You know very well my despair, my pain, and how I am bound by these knots.

Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot… I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all. You are my hope.

O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom from my chains.

Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, O safe refuge!

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. Amen.
