Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer to be said each day
O glorious Saint Charbel, who didst shine as a bright star in the firmament of the Church, and whose fragrance of holiness doth still perfume the cedars of Lebanon, I come before thee with confidence to begin this holy novena. Thou who didst forsake the world to live a life of prayer and penance in the solitude of the hermitage, look with pity upon me, a poor sinner in the midst of the world’s turmoil. I offer thee these nine days of prayer, uniting my feeble petitions with thy powerful intercession. Obtain for me from God the grace to make this novena with a devout and humble heart, and above all, the particular grace for which I now pray (mention your intention here). Amen.
Jour 1 : First Day: On Detachment from the World
Méditation
Let us consider how Saint Charbel, from his youth, felt a divine call to forsake the world and its empty promises. He saw clearly the vanity of earthly treasures and the fleeting nature of worldly honors. In the silence of the hermitage, he found the true treasure, which is God alone. He teaches us that our hearts, made for God, can never find rest in created things. Let us examine our own attachments: to possessions, to reputation, to comfort. Do these things draw us closer to God, or do they chain our souls to this passing world?
Prière du jour
O blessed Saint Charbel, who didst count all worldly things as loss for the sake of Christ, obtain for me the grace of holy detachment. Free my heart from all inordinate affection for the things of this earth, that I may seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Help me to use the goods of this world for God’s glory and the good of my neighbor, without ever allowing them to possess my soul. Amen.
Jour 2 : Second Day: On the Virtue of Humility
Méditation
Humility was the foundation of Saint Charbel’s spiritual life. He sought always the lowest place, hiding his extraordinary gifts and graces under the cloak of a simple and ordinary life. He obeyed his superiors without question, performed the most menial tasks with joy, and considered himself the least of all monks. He knew that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Let us reflect on our own pride, our desire to be seen and esteemed by others, and our impatience when we are corrected or overlooked.
Prière du jour
O humble Saint Charbel, mirror of the humility of Christ, who didst love to be unknown and counted as nothing, implore for me a true and profound humility of heart. Grant that I may know my own nothingness before the majesty of God, that I may despise the praise of men, and that I may accept humiliations with patience and even with joy, for the love of Him who humbled Himself for my salvation. Amen.
Jour 3 : Third Day: On Holy Obedience
Méditation
Saint Charbel’s obedience was perfect. In the will of his superiors, he saw the will of God Himself. Whether commanded to work in the fields, to pray, or to undertake some difficult penance, his response was always prompt, simple, and complete. He understood that through obedience, he was sacrificing his own will, the root of all sin, and uniting himself perfectly to the will of the Father. Let us consider how we obey God’s commandments, the precepts of the Church, and the duties of our state in life. Is our obedience reluctant, or is it a joyful surrender to God’s loving plan?
Prière du jour
O most obedient Saint Charbel, who didst find peace and security in submitting thy will to God through thy superiors, obtain for me the grace of a joyful and constant obedience. Teach me to silence my self-will and to embrace the will of God in all things, that by following the path of obedience on earth, I may attain to the freedom of the children of God in heaven. Amen.
Jour 4 : Fourth Day: On Angelic Purity
Méditation
Living in the flesh, Saint Charbel lived as an angel. He guarded his senses with extreme vigilance, especially his eyes, that no shadow of impurity might stain his soul. Through constant prayer, fasting, and mortification, he kept his body in subjection to his spirit, and his heart pure for God alone. He is a powerful model for us who live in a world so often contrary to this virtue. Let us ask ourselves how we guard our own purity of heart, mind, and body, in our thoughts, our words, and our actions.
Prière du jour
O most chaste Saint Charbel, lily of purity and lover of the angelic life, protect me in the midst of the dangers of the world. Obtain for me a great horror of sin, a diligent custody of my senses, and the grace to preserve my soul and body in holiness. May my heart be a pure dwelling place for the Holy Ghost, and may I one day see God in heaven, as is promised to the clean of heart. Amen.
Jour 5 : Fifth Day: On Evangelical Poverty
Méditation
Saint Charbel embraced Lady Poverty with the love of Saint Francis. He possessed nothing as his own, his habit was worn and patched, his food was meager, and his cell was bare of all comfort. In this radical poverty, he found immense spiritual riches and a profound freedom to love and serve God without distraction. He teaches us that the desire for wealth is a dangerous snare. Let us reflect on our own attitude towards material possessions. Do we live simply, or are we consumed by a desire for more?
Prière du jour
O lover of poverty, Saint Charbel, who didst find all thy riches in God, teach me to despise the mammon of iniquity. Obtain for me a spirit of poverty, that I may be content with what is necessary, generous towards those in need, and free from the anxiety that comes with worldly wealth. Help me to store up treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume. Amen.
Jour 6 : Sixth Day: On Devotion to the Holy Eucharist
Méditation
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was the sun of Saint Charbel’s life. He prepared for it with hours of prayer and made his thanksgiving with profound recollection. His face would shine with a heavenly light as he held the Sacred Host. The Eucharist was his food, his strength, his consolation, and his all. He shows us that the center of the Christian life is the altar. How do we approach this most august Sacrament? Is it with faith, reverence, and burning love, or with distraction and coldness of heart?
Prière du jour
O seraphic Saint Charbel, whose life was a perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, enkindle in my heart a fervent love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Obtain for me the grace to assist at Holy Mass with great devotion, to receive Holy Communion with purity and love, and to visit Our Lord in the tabernacle often. May the Eucharist be the center of my life, my strength in temptation, and my comfort in death. Amen.
Jour 7 : Seventh Day: On Filial Love for the Blessed Virgin Mary
Méditation
Saint Charbel was a true son of Mary. He entrusted his entire life, his vocation, and his perseverance to her maternal care. The Rosary was his constant companion, and in every trial, he had recourse to her with the simple confidence of a child. He knew that the path to Jesus is always safest and shortest when we walk it with His Mother. Let us consider our own devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Is she truly our Mother and our Queen? Do we fly to her protection in our needs?
Prière du jour
O faithful servant of Mary, Saint Charbel, who didst find in her a mother and a guide, teach me to love the Blessed Virgin with a tender and filial devotion. Obtain for me the grace to imitate her virtues, to pray her Rosary with attention, and to place all my confidence in her powerful intercession. May Mary, Star of the Sea, guide me safely through the storms of this life to the eternal harbor of salvation. Amen.
Jour 8 : Eighth Day: On a Life of Penance
Méditation
The life of Saint Charbel was one of unceasing penance. He fasted rigorously, slept on the hard ground, wore a hair shirt, and embraced voluntary mortifications for the love of God and the conversion of sinners. He did not perform these penances out of sadness, but with a joyful spirit, knowing that he was uniting his small sufferings with the infinite sufferings of Christ on the Cross. This spirit of penance is necessary for every Christian. Let us ask ourselves what small sacrifices we make for the love of God, to atone for our sins and to gain mastery over our passions.
Prière du jour
O great penitent, Saint Charbel, who by the mortification of thy flesh didst glorify God in thy body, obtain for me a true spirit of penance. Grant me the courage to deny myself, to take up my cross daily, and to follow Christ. Help me to bear my own trials with patience, and to offer them to God in a spirit of reparation for my sins and for the sins of the whole world. Amen.
Jour 9 : Ninth Day: On Perseverance in Prayer
Méditation
Saint Charbel’s life was a continuous prayer. Whether at work, in his cell, or before the altar, his mind and heart were always raised to God. He persevered in prayer day and night, in times of consolation and in times of dryness. This constant union with God was the secret of his sanctity and the source of his power as an intercessor. He teaches us that prayer is not merely an occasional duty, but the very breath of the soul. Let us resolve to be more faithful to our daily prayers, and to strive to live always in the presence of God.
Prière du jour
O man of God, Saint Charbel, whose conversation was in heaven, obtain for me the gift of prayer. Teach me to pray with faith, with perseverance, and with love. In this final day of the novena, I once again place my special intention before thee. Intercede for me, O powerful wonder-worker, that God may grant my request if it be for His glory and my salvation. Above all, obtain for me the grace to love God above all things and to persevere in His service until death. Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer to be said each day
O God, who didst call Saint Charbel, Thy chosen servant, to the solitary combat of the desert and didst enrich him with all manner of piety, we beseech Thee, grant that we, by imitating his patience and his love, may be made worthy to share in his glory in heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
