Introductory Prayer
O glorious Saint Rita, who didst miraculously participate in the sorrowful Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, obtain for me the grace to suffer with resignation the trials of this life, and protect me in all my necessities. Amen.
Jour 1 : Saint Rita, Model of Obedience
Méditation
Let us consider how Saint Rita, from her tenderest years, sought only to please God by a perfect obedience. She submitted her own will, which was to consecrate herself to God in the religious state, to the will of her parents, who wished her to marry. In this, she teaches us that the surest way to please God is to renounce our own will and to submit it entirely to His, manifested through our lawful superiors and the duties of our state in life.

O admirable Saint Rita, who didst ever find thy joy in obedience, obtain for me the grace to submit myself in all things to the holy will of God. Help me to see His hand in the trials and crosses of my life, and to accept with a cheerful heart whatsoever He may ordain for my salvation. Jour 2 : Saint Rita, Model of Patience
Méditation
Let us meditate upon the heroic patience of Saint Rita during her eighteen years of marriage to a man of violent and brutal temper. By her sweetness, her prayers, and her unalterable meekness, she not only bore his ill-treatment without complaint but also succeeded in converting him to God. She is a sublime model for all those who suffer in their domestic life, showing that patience and prayer can conquer the hardest of hearts.

Consider the heroic charity of Saint Rita, who, after the tragic murder of her husband, not only forgave his assassins but prayed earnestly for them. Fearing that her two sons would seek to avenge their father’s death, thereby endangering their eternal salvation, she besought God to take them from this world rather than permit them to commit so great a sin. Her prayer was heard, and they died in a state of grace. What a sublime example of forgiveness and maternal love!

Let us reflect on the holy perseverance of Saint Rita in pursuing her vocation. After the death of her husband and sons, she sought admission to the Augustinian convent at Cascia. Thrice she was refused, but she did not lose heart. She redoubled her prayers, her penances, and her works of charity, until God miraculously granted her entrance into the cloister she so ardently desired. She teaches us never to be discouraged in the service of God, but to persevere in prayer and good works.

She performed the most menial tasks with joy and devoted herself to prayer and penance with an ardor that edified the entire community. Her life was a continual canticle of love for her Divine Spouse.

Consider the ardent love of Saint Rita for Jesus Crucified. One day, while meditating on His Passion, she begged Him to let her share in His sufferings. Her prayer was answered, and a thorn from the crown of the Crucifix detached itself and was miraculously impressed upon her forehead. This painful wound, which she bore for fifteen years, was a continual source of merit and a visible sign of her union with her suffering Lord.

Jour 7 : Saint Rita, Wonder-Worker
Méditation
Let us admire the power which God gave to His humble servant. During her life and after her death, countless miracles were wrought through her intercession. The miracle of the rose and the figs, which blossomed in mid-winter at her request, shows how pleasing she was to God. Even today, she is universally invoked as the ‘Saint of the Impossible,’ because through her, God is pleased to grant favors that seem beyond all human hope.

Jour 8 : Saint Rita, Consolation of the Afflicted

Let us consider the long and painful illness which confined Saint Rita to her cell for the last four years of her life. She bore her excruciating pains not only with patience but with joy, seeing in them an opportunity to be more perfectly conformed to her Crucified Spouse. Her cell became a source of edification, and her example a comfort to all who suffer. She teaches us that suffering, when accepted with love, is a precious treasure.

O Saint Rita, comforter of the afflicted, who didst endure a long and painful martyrdom of sickness, look with pity upon all who suffer in body or in soul. Obtain for them patience in their trials and resignation to God’s holy will. Be a special advocate for the sick, the dying, and all who are tempted to despair. Let us contemplate the glorious death of Saint Rita and her triumphant entry into heaven. At the moment of her passing, her cell was filled with a celestial light, and a sweet fragrance emanated from her holy body, which remains incorrupt to this day. From her throne in heaven, she continues her mission of helping those in desperate need. Let us, therefore, on this last day of the novena, place all our confidence in her, firmly hoping that she will obtain for us the grace we seek.

Relieve my poor heart, I beseech thee, from the anxiety that oppresses it, and restore peace to my troubled spirit. Thou who wast established by God as the advocate in the most desperate cases, have pity on me. If my sins are an obstacle to the fulfillment of my desires, obtain for me from God the grace of repentance and pardon through a sincere confession. Promise not, in any case, to cease from importuning thee, until thou hast obtained for me that which I ask.
