Prayers for the Sacraments and Life’s Journey
O God, who art the author and finisher of our faith, and who dost guide Thy children through the pilgrimage of this life by the grace of Thy holy Sacraments; grant us, we beseech Thee, to approach these founts of salvation with pure hearts, and to live worthily of the vocation to which we are called. Amen.
For Holy Baptism
O Lord God Almighty, who hast been pleased to regenerate this Thy servant by water and the Holy Ghost, and to grant him (her) remission of all his (her) sins; we beseech Thee to keep him (her) in Thy grace. May he (she) who hath been made a temple of the Holy Ghost, and a member of Thy Church, renounce the devil and all his works and pomps, and ever remain steadfast in the faith received in this holy sacrament. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
For Holy Confirmation
O Spirit of God, Spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and fortitude, of knowledge and piety, and of the fear of the Lord; descend upon us, and make us true soldiers of Jesus Christ. Strengthen our souls, that we may never be ashamed to confess our faith, but may fight manfully under the banner of the Cross against the world, the flesh, and the devil, unto our life’s end. Amen.
For the Most Holy Eucharist
My Lord Jesus Christ, I firmly believe that I have received Thy Body and Thy Blood, Thy Soul and Thy Divinity, in this Holy Sacrament. I adore Thee, I praise Thee, and I give Thee thanks for this infinite goodness. I unite myself wholly to Thee; do Thou never permit me to be separated from Thee. May this divine food be the nourishment of my soul, the remedy for my weaknesses, and a pledge of my future glory. Amen.
For the Sacrament of Penance
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
For the Anointing of the Sick
O merciful Redeemer, who in Thy loving-kindness dost afford a saving remedy to Thy servants in their bodily infirmities; look graciously upon this Thy servant who is ill. If it be Thy holy will, restore him (her) to health; but if Thou hast ordained otherwise, grant him (her) patience to bear his (her) sufferings, and grace to sanctify them, that his (her) soul, purified from all stain, may find rest in Thee. Amen.
For Holy Orders
O Lord Jesus Christ, eternal High Priest, we pray for Thy faithful and fervent priests; for Thy unfaithful and lukewarm priests; for Thy priests who labour at home or abroad in distant mission fields. We pray for Thy tempted priests; Thy lonely and desolate priests; Thy young priests; Thy aged priests; Thy sick priests; Thy dying priests; and for the souls of Thy priests in Purgatory. But above all we commend to Thee the priests dearest to us: the priest who baptized us; the priests who absolved us from our sins; the priests at whose Masses we assisted and who gave us Thy Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed us; all the priests to whom we are indebted in any other way. O Jesus, keep them all close to Thy heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.
For Holy Matrimony
O God, who hast consecrated the state of matrimony to such an excellent mystery, that in it Thou didst signify the sacramental union of Christ with His Church; we beseech Thee to grant to these Thy servants the grace to live in mutual love and fidelity. May they be a sign of Thy presence to one another and to the world, and may they bring up their children in Thy fear and love, to the glory of Thy name. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Contexte Historique
This is not a single, ancient prayer, but a collection of traditional devotions centered on the Seven Sacraments, which mark the pivotal moments of a Catholic’s spiritual life. From Baptism to the Anointing of the Sick, the Church has always provided prayers to help the faithful prepare for, receive, and live out the graces conferred by these sacred rites instituted by Christ Himself. These formulations draw upon centuries of piety and theological reflection, aiming to sanctify every stage of the human journey.
