Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer for Each Day
O glorious Saint Benedict, sublime model of all virtues, pure vessel of God’s grace! Behold me, humbly kneeling at thy feet. I implore thy loving heart to pray for me before the throne of God. To thee I have recourse in all the dangers which daily surround me. Shield me against my enemies, inspire me to imitate thee in all things.
May thy blessing be with me always, so that I may shun whatever God forbids and avoid the occasions of sin. Graciously obtain for me from God those favors and graces of which I stand so much in need, in the trials, miseries and afflictions of life. Thy heart was ever so full of love, compassion, and mercy towards those who were afflicted or troubled in any way. Thou didst never dismiss without consolation and assistance any one who had recourse to thee. I therefore invoke thy powerful intercession, in the confident hope that thou wilt hear my prayers and obtain for me the special grace and favor I so earnestly implore (Here mention your request), if it be for the greater glory of God and the welfare of my soul. Amen.
Jour 1 : Day 1: Renunciation of the World
Méditation
Let us consider how Saint Benedict, from his youth, fled the vanities of the world to seek God in solitude. He understood that to hear the voice of the Lord, one must first quiet the clamor of earthly distractions. In the cave at Subiaco, he dedicated himself entirely to prayer and penance, laying the foundation for a life of heroic virtue. This retreat from the world was not an escape, but a profound engagement with God, preparing him to become a light for countless souls. He teaches us the necessity of interior silence and of making space for God in our hearts, away from the noise and confusion of modern life.
Prière du jour
O glorious Saint Benedict, who didst renounce the world and its allurements to dedicate thyself wholly to God, obtain for me the grace to detach my heart from all that is not of God. Teach me to value silence and solitude, that I may better hear the voice of the Lord in prayer. Intercede for me, that I may have the courage to flee the occasions of sin and to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Amen.
Jour 2 : Day 2: The Virtue of Humility
Méditation
Let us meditate upon the virtue of humility, which Saint Benedict called the foundation of the spiritual edifice. In his Holy Rule, he outlines twelve degrees of humility, a ladder by which the monk ascends to perfect charity. This path begins with the fear of God and culminates in a constant, loving awareness of His presence. Saint Benedict teaches us that true greatness lies not in exalting ourselves, but in humbling ourselves before God and our neighbor. It is through this emptying of self that we become vessels fit to receive the fullness of divine grace.
Prière du jour
O model of humility, Saint Benedict, who didst count thyself as the least of all, obtain for me the grace to know myself and to despise the foolish pride of my heart. Pray that I may joyfully accept humiliations for the love of Christ, and that I may learn to serve others rather than to seek to be served. Instill in me a sincere desire to walk the path of the twelve degrees of humility, so that I may be exalted by Christ in His heavenly kingdom. Amen.
Jour 3 : Day 3: Victory over Temptation
Méditation
Let us reflect on Saint Benedict’s victory over the temptations of the flesh. When assailed by a violent temptation of impurity, he did not despair but, inspired by grace, cast himself into a thicket of thorns and briars, extinguishing the fire of concupiscence with bodily pain. This heroic act shows us the necessity of spiritual warfare and the importance of mortification in preserving purity of heart. He teaches us not to parley with temptation, but to fly from it and to have recourse to prayer and penance as powerful weapons against the assaults of the devil.
Prière du jour
O victorious Saint Benedict, who didst conquer the demon of impurity by thy great fortitude and penance, I implore thy assistance in my struggles for chastity. Protect me from all unclean thoughts, words, and actions. Obtain for me a great horror of sin and the strength to resist all temptations against the holy virtue of purity. May I, through thy powerful intercession, keep my body and soul as a holy temple of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Jour 4 : Day 4: Power over the Devil
Méditation
Let us consider the great power which God granted to Saint Benedict over the spirits of darkness. By the sign of the Holy Cross and the invocation of Christ’s name, he thwarted the plans of the enemy, shattered a poisoned cup, and drove demons from those they possessed. The Medal which bears his image and cross is a testament to this power, a sacramental cherished by the faithful for protection against evil. Saint Benedict reminds us that the power of Christ is infinitely greater than that of Satan, and that we have nothing to fear when we place our trust in the saving sign of the Cross.
Prière du jour
O mighty Saint Benedict, terror of demons, who didst wield the sign of the Cross as a shield against all the snares of the enemy, protect me from the spiritual and temporal evils that beset me. By thy holy blessing, deliver me from the influence of the evil one. Defend me from envy, malice, and all harm to body and soul. May the Holy Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ be my light and my guide, and mayest thou be my protector and advocate at all times. Amen.
Jour 5 : Day 5: The Rule of Prayer and Work
Méditation
Let us meditate on the principle that animated Saint Benedict’s entire life and Rule: Ora et Labora, Pray and Work. He taught that prayer and labor must support one another. Prayer sanctifies work, elevating it from a mere task to an offering to God. Work, in turn, disciplines the body and mind, preventing idleness, which he called ‘the enemy of the soul.’ This holy balance creates a rhythm of life where every moment is ordered to the glory of God, whether in the chapel, the field, or the workshop. It is a practical path to holiness for every state in life.
Prière du jour
O wise master of the spiritual life, Saint Benedict, who didst teach the world the sanctity of prayer and labor, obtain for me the grace to be faithful to my duties of prayer and my daily work. Help me to avoid idleness and to perform all my actions for the greater glory of God. May I learn to find God in the midst of my occupations, and may my labor, united with my prayer, become a source of grace for myself and for others. Amen.
Jour 6 : Day 6: Charity and Hospitality
Méditation
Let us consider the profound charity and hospitality of Saint Benedict. In his Rule, he commanded that all guests who come to the monastery be received as Christ Himself. He showed special care for the poor, the sick, and the pilgrims, seeing the face of his suffering Lord in them. This charity was not merely a sentiment, but a practical and generous service, flowing from his deep love for God. He teaches us that our love for God is proven by our love for our neighbor, especially the most needy and forgotten.
Prière du jour
O most charitable father, Saint Benedict, who didst open thy heart and the doors of thy monastery to all who came, seeing Christ in the poor and the stranger, enkindle in my heart a spark of thy generous love. Banish from me all selfishness and indifference. Grant that I may be merciful to others, patient in their faults, and generous in their needs. Teach me to serve Christ in my neighbor, that I may one day be welcomed by Him into His eternal dwelling. Amen.
Jour 7 : Day 7: The Gift of Miracles
Méditation
Let us reflect upon the gift of prophecy and miracles with which God adorned the soul of Saint Benedict. He read the secrets of hearts, foretold future events, and worked numerous miracles, not for his own glory, but for the confirmation of faith and the conversion of souls. From making water flow from a rock to raising a young monk from the dead, his life was a testament to the power of God working through His humble servant. These signs were a fruit of his intimate union with God, showing that for those who are entirely given to the Lord, nothing is impossible.
Prière du jour
O wonder-worker of God, Saint Benedict, who wast favored with extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost, I marvel at the power God displayed through thee. While I do not presume to ask for such signs, I do ask for a firm and unshakable faith in God’s power and providence. Strengthen my belief in the supernatural, and obtain for me the grace to trust completely in God’s will, knowing that He can bring good out of every circumstance for those who love Him. Amen.
Jour 8 : Day 8: Zeal for the Work of God
Méditation
Let us consider Saint Benedict’s zeal for the proper worship of God, which he called the Opus Dei, the Work of God. He arranged the entire monastic day around the solemn chanting of the Divine Office, giving it precedence over all other activities. ‘Let nothing,’ he wrote, ‘be preferred to the Work of God.’ This reverence for the sacred liturgy teaches us the importance of giving God the best of our time, our attention, and our hearts in prayer. It reminds us that public worship is our highest duty and greatest privilege as members of the Church.
Prière du jour
O great lover of the liturgy, Saint Benedict, who didst establish a school of the Lord’s service centered on the solemn praise of God, obtain for me a greater reverence and devotion for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the prayers of the Church. Help me to participate in the sacred mysteries with a recollected mind and a fervent heart. May I, like thee, prefer nothing to the Work of God, and find in the liturgy the source and summit of my Christian life. Amen.
Jour 9 : Day 9: Patronage of a Holy Death
Méditation
Let us meditate on the holy death of our glorious father, Saint Benedict. Knowing that his end was near, he commanded his disciples to carry him into the oratory. There, having received the Body and Blood of the Lord, he stood, supported in the arms of his brethren, with his hands raised to heaven, and breathed forth his last in an attitude of prayer. His death was the crown of a life spent in God’s service, a peaceful passage from the monastery on earth to the heavenly Jerusalem. He is thus a powerful patron for a holy and happy death.
Prière du jour
O glorious patriarch, Saint Benedict, who didst die standing in prayer, a faithful servant awaiting his Master, I commend to thee the hour of my death. Protect me in that final struggle against the assaults of the devil. Obtain for me the grace of final perseverance, the assistance of the holy Sacraments, and a deep contrition for my sins. May I, like thee, breathe forth my soul in an act of love for God, and be found worthy to enter into the eternal peace which thou dost now enjoy. Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer for Each Day
O holy father, Saint Benedict, pray for us.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
O God, Who didst make Saint Benedict, thine Abbot, an eminent master in the school of divine service, grant, we beseech Thee, that, preferring nothing to the love of Christ, we may walk with a heart enlarged in the path of Thy commandments. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
(Recite one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be.)
