Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
O Mary, Immaculate Virgin, we venerate thee under the title of Our Lady of Africa. Thou art the beloved Daughter of the Father, the glorious Mother of the Son, and the faithful Spouse of the Holy Ghost. We come before thee with the confidence of children, to lay at thy feet our prayers and petitions.
Deign, O merciful Mother, to cast a favourable glance upon us and upon the whole continent of Africa which is consecrated to thee. Through this novena, we desire to honour thee, to thank thee for thy benefits, and to implore the assistance we need in our spiritual and temporal necessities. Amen.
Jour 1 : Our Lady of Africa, Universal Mother
Méditation
We begin our novena by contemplating the glorious title of Our Lady of Africa. From her basilica in Algiers, she watches over the land and the sea, a beacon of hope for all who look to her. Her dark countenance reminds us of the ancient presence of the Church on African soil, and her open arms signify a universal motherhood that excludes no one. She is the Mother of the African peoples, the protector of seafarers, and the comforter of the exiled. Let us consider how her heart is a refuge for all her children, regardless of their origin or creed, and how she presents all their sorrows and hopes to her Divine Son.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Our Lady of Africa, whose maternal gaze embraces a whole continent, we place ourselves with confidence under thy protection. Thou who art the honour of the African land, sanctified by the blood of martyrs and the wisdom of holy Doctors, watch over thy children. Teach us thy universal love, that we may see in every man a brother for whom thy Son hath shed His blood. Amen.
Jour 2 : Our Lady of Africa, Hope of the Afflicted
Méditation
The history of Africa is one of great triumphs of faith and profound suffering. In the midst of trials, persecutions, and poverty, the faithful have ever looked to Mary as a sign of certain hope. As the Mother of Sorrows stood at the foot of the Cross, so Our Lady of Africa stands beside her children in their afflictions. She is the Star of the Sea who guides them through the tempests of life, the Cause of their Joy who brings them the light of Christ. Let us meditate on her constant presence as a source of strength and perseverance for all who suffer, and let us entrust to her the many tribulations of the African continent.
Prière du jour
O Our Lady of Africa, Consoler of the Afflicted, look with pity upon the sorrows of thy people. For those who suffer from war, famine, and disease, be a source of relief. For those who are persecuted for their faith, be their strength and shield. For those who are forced to leave their homeland, be their guide and protector. Obtain for us all the grace of holy perseverance in the midst of trials. Amen.
Jour 3 : Our Lady of Africa, Mother of Reconciliation
Méditation
In the apse of her basilica is inscribed the prayer, ‘Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims.’ This invocation reveals the heart of her mission: to be a mother of reconciliation and a bridge of peace between peoples. Mary, a daughter of Israel, chosen by God to be the Mother of the Saviour, holds a place of reverence not only in Christianity but also in Islam. Let us meditate on this unique position she holds, and ask her to foster mutual respect, understanding, and peace between Christians and all their neighbours, that all may one day be gathered into the one fold of the one Shepherd.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Queen of Peace, whose heart desires the salvation of all souls, we take up the prayer of thy sanctuary: pray for us, and for our Muslim brethren. Remove from our hearts all enmity and misunderstanding. Plant in our souls the seeds of true charity and the desire for fraternal harmony, that we may live together in peace on earth and rejoice together in heaven. Amen.
Jour 4 : Our Lady of Africa, Protector of the Church
Méditation
The Church in Africa is vibrant and full of life, a testament to the power of the Gospel. Yet it faces many challenges. Our Lady of Africa is the Mother of the Church, and she watches with special tenderness over the flock in the land she has taken for her own. She inspires missionaries, strengthens bishops and priests, sanctifies religious, and protects the lay faithful. Let us pray today for the Church in Africa, that it may be a luminous beacon of faith, hope, and charity, and a powerful leaven for the sanctification of the entire continent.
Prière du jour
O Our Lady of Africa, Mother of the Church, we entrust to thy care the pastors and the faithful of the African continent. Obtain for them the fire of the Holy Ghost, that they may announce the Gospel with courage. Protect them from all dangers of soul and body. Grant that, through their witness, the Kingdom of thy Son may extend to the furthest bounds of the land. Amen.
Jour 5 : Our Lady of Africa, Queen of Families
Méditation
The family is the domestic church, the first cell of society. The future of Africa, as of the whole world, depends on the sanctity of its families. Our Lady of Africa, who with Jesus and Joseph formed the Holy Family of Nazareth, understands perfectly the joys and trials of family life. She is the model for all mothers, the guardian of all homes. Let us ask her today to protect all families, to keep them united in love, to sanctify their daily labours, and to make them schools of virtue and prayer.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Queen of the Home, who didst watch over the Holy Family at Nazareth, extend thy mantle of protection over all the families of Africa. Defend them against the evils that threaten them. Obtain for spouses the grace of fidelity and mutual love. Help parents to raise their children in the fear and love of God. May every home be a sanctuary of peace and prayer, after the model of thine own. Amen.
Jour 6 : Our Lady of Africa, Queen of All Saints
Méditation
Africa was the cradle of great saints who have enriched the entire Church. We think of the great Doctors, Saint Augustine, Saint Athanasius, and Saint Cyril; the glorious martyrs, Saint Cyprian, Saints Perpetua and Felicity; and the holy women, Saint Monica. All these saints drew their strength from a profound devotion to the Mother of God. Our Lady of Africa continues to raise up saints on this blessed soil. Let us meditate on this heritage of holiness and ask her to obtain for us the grace to imitate the virtues of these great witnesses of the faith.
Prière du jour
O Our Lady of Africa, Queen of All Saints, we thank thee for the magnificent constellation of saints with which thou hast adorned the African Church. By their example, teach us to love thy Son above all things. By their intercession, obtain for us the courage to profess our faith without fear, to live according to the Gospel, and to aspire to the holiness to which God calls us. Amen.
Jour 7 : Our Lady of Africa, Help of Christians
Méditation
The title ‘Help of Christians’ was given to Our Lady in gratitude for her assistance in defending the faith against its enemies. In Africa, as elsewhere, the faithful face many battles: the battle against paganism and superstition, the battle against materialism, and the spiritual battle against the forces of evil. In all these struggles, Mary is our ever-present help, the one who crushes the head of the serpent. Let us fly to her protection with the confidence of children, certain that under her command, we shall be victorious.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Help of Christians, formidable as an army in battle array, defend us in our struggles against the enemies of our salvation. Be our shield against the temptations of the devil, our bulwark against the spirit of the world, and our strength in the face of our own weakness. With thee as our guide and protectress, we are certain of victory. Amen.
Jour 8 : Our Lady of Africa, Star of the Sea
Méditation
Our Lady of Africa is often invoked by sailors and travellers, who see her sanctuary as a guiding star from the sea. Her protection extends to all who are on a journey, especially the perilous journey of life. Today, we think especially of the many migrants and refugees who, driven by poverty or violence, undertake dangerous voyages in search of safety and a better life. Many cross the deserts of Africa or the waters of the Mediterranean, placing their trust in God. Let us commend them to Our Lady, Star of the Sea, that she may guide them safely to port and comfort them in their exile.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Star of the Sea, who dost guide the mariner through the dark and stormy night, look with compassion upon all who travel in peril. We commend to thee especially the migrants, the refugees, and the exiles. Protect them from all harm, comfort them in their loneliness, and lead them to a place of safety and peace. Be for us all the guiding star on our journey to our heavenly homeland. Amen.
Jour 9 : Our Lady of Africa, Gate of Heaven
Méditation
On this final day of our novena, we lift our eyes to heaven, our true home. Mary, having been assumed body and soul into heavenly glory, is the Gate of Heaven and the Morning Star, announcing the dawn of eternal day. Through her intercession, she prepares a place for us in the kingdom of her Son. Our Lady of Africa, with her hand pointing towards heaven, reminds us of our ultimate destination. Let us resolve to live our lives in such a way that, at the hour of our death, she may welcome us and present us to Jesus, the blessed fruit of her womb.
Prière du jour
O Our Lady of Africa, Gate of Heaven, we have come to the end of this novena full of gratitude for thy maternal goodness. We have entrusted to thee our needs and the needs of the entire African continent. Now, we ask for the final grace: that of a holy death. At the hour of our departure from this world, be thou at our side. Show us thy Son, Jesus, and lead us into the eternal joy of paradise. Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer
Remember, O Our Lady of Africa, the prayer of the great Cardinal Lavigerie, which we make our own:
‘O Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church, who from the height of this sanctuary watchest over thy children in Christ and over those who do not yet know Him, intercede for us all.’
Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for our Muslim brethren.
(Recite one Hail Mary and one Glory Be for the intentions of the novena.)
