Novena to the Immaculate Conception

Immaculate Conception - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer for Each Day

O most pure Virgin Mary, conceived without sin, from the very first instant of thy existence, thou wert the beloved Daughter of the eternal Father, the holy Mother of the Son, and the cherished Spouse of the Holy Ghost. I, thy unworthy servant, rejoice with thee in this singular privilege, and I humbly prostrate myself before thee, beseeching thee to obtain for me the grace to pray this novena with devotion and to obtain the graces I seek, if they be for the glory of God and the salvation of my soul. Amen.

Jour 1 : Day 1: The Eternal Decree

    Méditation

Let us consider how the eternal Father, in His infinite wisdom and love, decreed from all eternity the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Before the creation of the world, when He foresaw the fall of our first parents, He also planned the redemption of mankind through His only-begotten Son. In this same divine plan, He chose a Mother for the Redeemer, a vessel so pure and spotless that she would be a worthy dwelling for the Word made flesh. She was, in the mind of God, the masterpiece of His creation, set apart and preserved from the universal stain of original sin, a radiant dawn heralding the Sun of Justice.

    Prière du jour

O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin didst prepare a worthy dwelling for Thy Son; grant, we beseech Thee, that as Thou didst preserve her from all stain of sin by the foreseen merits of His death, so we, by her intercession, may be cleansed from our sins and come to Thee. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jour 2 : Day 2: The New Eve

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon Mary as the new Eve. The first Eve, created in grace, listened to the serpent and by her disobedience brought sin and death into the world. Mary, the new Eve, conceived in the fullness of grace, listened to the angel and by her perfect obedience brought forth the author of life and grace. The promise made in the Garden of a woman who would crush the serpent’s head finds its perfect fulfillment in the Immaculate Virgin. Her complete enmity with sin, from the first moment of her existence, makes her the perpetual victor over the ancient foe.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, our Mother, the new Eve, who by thy humble “fiat” didst crush the pride of the ancient serpent; obtain for us the grace of true humility and perfect obedience to the will of God, that we too may triumph over sin and evil in our lives. Amen.

Jour 3 : Day 3: Preserved from All Stain of Sin

    Méditation

Let us reflect upon the singular privilege of Mary being preserved from original sin. All other children of Adam are conceived in a state of sin, deprived of sanctifying grace. But Mary, by a special grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin in the first instant of her conception. She was never for a moment under the dominion of Satan. Her soul was created and infused with the fullness of grace, making her all-beautiful, tota pulchra, in the eyes of God.

    Prière du jour

O Immaculate Virgin, lily of purity, who wast ever the enemy of sin; we thank the Most Holy Trinity for this wondrous privilege. We beseech thee, obtain for us a deep and lasting hatred for all sin, and the strength to preserve our souls in sanctifying grace. Amen.

Jour 4 : Day 4: Full of Grace

    Méditation

Let us consider the fullness of grace bestowed upon Mary at her Immaculate Conception. The Archangel Gabriel greeted her as “full of grace.” This was not a grace she acquired over time, but a state in which she was created. From the first moment of her existence, her soul was adorned with a superabundance of divine grace, far surpassing that of all angels and saints combined. This initial plenitude of grace prepared her for her sublime dignity as the Mother of God and enabled her to correspond perfectly with God’s will at every moment of her life.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, full of grace, treasure-house of all heavenly gifts; we, who are so poor in grace and virtue, have recourse to thee. Obtain for us from thy divine Son an increase of faith, hope, and charity, that we may grow daily in His love and service. Amen.

Jour 5 : Day 5: The Ark of the New Covenant

    Méditation

Let us meditate on Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant. The ark of the Old Covenant, which contained the manna, the law, and the rod of Aaron, was made of the purest materials and was held in the highest reverence. How much more pure and holy must have been the living Ark, the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was to bear not mere symbols, but the very Author of grace, the divine Lawgiver, and the eternal High Priest. It was not fitting that the body which was to give flesh to the Son of God should ever be tainted by sin or subject to the devil.

    Prière du jour

O Vessel of Honor, singular vessel of devotion, Ark of the New Covenant; grant that our hearts may become worthy temples of the Holy Ghost, purified from all that is displeasing to God, and ever ready to receive our Lord in Holy Communion. Amen.

Jour 6 : Day 6: The Immaculate Heart

    Méditation

Let us consider the Immaculate Heart of Mary. A heart, to be immaculate, must be free from all sin and filled with all virtue. From the first instant of her conception, Mary’s heart was a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed, belonging entirely to God. It was a heart burning with the purest love for God and the most tender compassion for mankind. This Immaculate Heart, which was to be pierced by a sword of sorrow, is for us a source of hope and a refuge in all our trials.

    Prière du jour

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, model of all virtues; we consecrate ourselves to thee. Form our hearts after the likeness of thine own, that they may be pure, humble, and inflamed with divine love. Be thou our refuge in life and our solace in the hour of death. Amen.

Jour 7 : Day 7: Our Lady of Lourdes

    Méditation

Let us reflect on the confirmation of this dogma by heaven itself. In 1858, at Lourdes, the Blessed Virgin appeared to the humble child, Saint Bernadette. When the young girl asked the beautiful Lady her name, she replied, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” These words, spoken from heaven, were a divine seal upon the truth which the Church had solemnly defined four years earlier. Our Lady herself confirms her unique privilege and invites us to rejoice in it and to have recourse to her powerful intercession.

    Prière du jour

O Our Lady of Lourdes, who didst deign to reveal thyself as the Immaculate Conception; we thank thee for this heavenly confirmation of our faith. Grant, we beseech thee, that through thy intercession we may live lives of purity and penance, and one day see thee in the glory of heaven. Amen.

Jour 8 : Day 8: A Model for Our Sanctification

    Méditation

Let us consider how the Immaculate Conception is a model and a pledge for our own sanctification. Mary’s perfect purity shows us the beauty of a soul untouched by sin and wholly dedicated to God. It is the ideal to which we are all called. While we are conceived with original sin, we are cleansed and made holy in the waters of Baptism. Mary’s Immaculate Conception is a pledge of the power of Christ’s grace, which can overcome all sin in us and lead us to holiness. She is the proof that with God, nothing is impossible.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Mirror of Justice and Seat of Wisdom; thou art the model of all Christian perfection. Help us to imitate thy virtues, especially thy purity, thy humility, and thy love for God. By contemplating thy sinless life, may we be inspired to strive for holiness in our own. Amen.

Jour 9 : Day 9: Mary, Queen Conceived Without Sin

    Méditation

Let us conclude our novena by honoring Mary as our Queen, conceived without original sin. Because of her Immaculate Conception and her divine Maternity, she has been exalted above all creatures, angels and saints, and crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her reign is one of mercy and compassion. From her throne of glory, she watches over her children on earth, dispensing the graces which flow from the merits of her Son. Let us place all our confidence in her, our Queen and our Mother.

    Prière du jour

O Queen, conceived without original sin, pray for us. We place ourselves under thy royal mantle. Protect us from all evil, guide us in our pilgrimage through this life, and lead us safely to the kingdom of thy Son, where we hope to praise thee and the most Holy Trinity for all eternity. Amen.
