Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer for Each Day
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst send Thy Blessed Mother to appear to us at La Salette, to call us back to our Christian duties, grant that we, moved by her tears and docile to her warnings, may appease in this life Thy just wrath by a sincere penance, and may merit by our good works the grace of eternal salvation. Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, world without end. Amen.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
Jour 1 : The Tears of the Blessed Virgin
Méditation
Let us meditate upon the apparition of the Blessed Virgin at La Salette. Two poor children, Mélanie and Maximin, beheld a magnificent Lady, seated upon a rock, weeping bitterly. Her tears, more precious than gold, flowed from a heart pierced with sorrow for the sins of her people. She who is the Queen of Heaven and Earth humbled herself to appear in a remote mountain pasture, her face bathed in tears, to call us back to her Son. Let us consider the depth of her love and the gravity of the offenses that cause her such grief.
Prière du jour
O Mother of Sorrows, who didst deign to appear at La Salette to weep for our sins, obtain for me, I beseech thee, the gift of tears. Grant me a profound sorrow for my own offenses and a tender compassion for the sins of the world, that my heart may be moved to true repentance and a firm purpose of amendment. Amen.
Jour 2 : The Sanctification of Sunday
Méditation
Our Lady lamented that her people had forgotten the sanctity of the Lord’s Day. She spoke of the cart-drivers who could not swear without using her Son’s name, and of the labor performed on Sunday which ought to be given to God alone. The Third Commandment is a sign of our covenant with God, a day for rest and for worship. By profaning it, we show contempt for the Creator and deny Him the honor which is His due. Let us examine our own conscience regarding our observance of this holy day.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Queen of the Apostles, who didst remind us to keep holy the Lord’s Day, intercede for us. Obtain for us the grace to sanctify our Sundays through prayer, attendance at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and works of charity. May we cease from all servile labor and give this day entirely to the glory of God and the salvation of our souls. Amen.
Jour 3 : Reverence for the Holy Name
Méditation
With great sadness, the Blessed Virgin complained of the widespread sin of blasphemy. “If my people will not submit,” she said, “I shall be forced to let fall the arm of my Son. It is so heavy, so weighty, that I can no longer hold it back.” The Holy Name of Jesus is a name above all names, at which every knee should bend. Yet how often is it used with irreverence, anger, and contempt! Each blasphemy is a new thorn in the crown of our Saviour, a fresh blow upon His sacred face, and a cause of profound grief to His Holy Mother.
Prière du jour
O Blessed Virgin of La Salette, whose heart is pierced by the blasphemies uttered against thy Divine Son, obtain for us a profound reverence for the Holy Name of God. Grant that our tongues may ever be used to praise, bless, and adore Him. Instill in us a spirit of reparation, that we may console the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the outrages He receives. Amen.
Jour 4 : The Call to Penance
Méditation
Our Lady spoke of the neglect of penance, especially the Lenten fast. “During Lent, they go to the butcher-shops like dogs.” This stark image reveals how far her people had strayed from the spirit of the Gospel. Penance, prayer, and fasting are the weapons against sin and the means by which we unite our small sufferings to the great sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. Without penance, the soul grows weak, the passions reign, and the way to perdition is made smooth.
Prière du jour
O Reconciler of Sinners, who callest us to penance, obtain for us a true spirit of mortification. Help us to embrace voluntary sacrifices, to observe the fasts of the Church with fidelity, and to bear our daily crosses with patience. May our acts of penance be pleasing to God and obtain the conversion of many souls. Amen.
Jour 5 : The Hammer and the Pincers
Méditation
Upon her breast, Our Lady wore a radiant crucifix. On one side of the cross was a hammer, and on the other, a pair of pincers. These are the instruments of our choice. With every sin, we take up the hammer and drive the nails deeper into the hands and feet of our Lord. With every act of repentance and love, we take up the pincers to draw them out and console His Sacred Heart. This choice is before us at every moment of our lives. Which instrument shall we choose today?
Prière du jour
O Mother of the Crucified, who didst bear upon thy breast the instruments of the Passion, grant us a horror of sin. May the sight of the crucifix remind us of the price of our redemption. Give us the courage to choose the pincers of repentance and love, that we may ease the sufferings of thy Son and share one day in the glory of His resurrection. Amen.
Jour 6 : The Warning of Chastisement
Méditation
The Blessed Virgin warned of temporal punishments that would follow spiritual decay. She spoke of the blighted potatoes, the spoiled wheat, and the dying walnuts. God, in His justice, permits such chastisements to awaken His children from their spiritual slumber. These earthly calamities are but a faint shadow of the eternal loss of God which is the consequence of unrepented mortal sin. Let us heed the warning of our Mother and return to God before it is too late.
Prière du jour
O Virgin most powerful, who didst warn thy people of coming chastisements, protect us from the justice of God which we have so often deserved. Arouse in us a salutary fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom. Teach us to see in the trials of this life a call to conversion, that we may escape the eternal punishments of the next. Amen.
Jour 7 : The Promise of Mercy
Méditation
After her warnings, Our Lady offered a message of hope. “If they are converted,” she promised, “the stones and rocks will turn into heaps of wheat, and the potatoes will be self-sown in the land.” God’s mercy is greater than His justice. He does not desire the death of the sinner, but rather that he be converted and live. A sincere return to God, marked by prayer and penance, can turn the greatest curse into the most abundant blessing. The Heart of her Son is an infinite ocean of mercy, waiting to be poured out upon us.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Gate of Heaven and Cause of our Joy, who didst promise abundant blessings upon the converted, turn thy merciful eyes towards us. Strengthen our hope in the infinite mercy of God. Obtain for us the grace of a sincere and lasting conversion, that we may experience in this life the fruits of God’s forgiveness and enjoy His presence forever in the next. Amen.
Jour 8 : The Mission to All Her People
Méditation
Before she departed, Our Lady gave a final command to the children: “Well, my children, you will make this known to all my people.” This mission was not for Mélanie and Maximin alone, but for all who hear the message of La Salette. We are all called to be apostles of reconciliation. We must share this message of warning and hope, first by the example of our own converted lives, and then by our words, encouraging others to return to prayer, to penance, and to the love of God.
Prière du jour
O Queen of the Apostles, who didst entrust thy message to humble children, enkindle in our hearts a fervent apostolic zeal. Remove from us all human respect and cowardice. Grant us the courage and wisdom to make thy message known to all those whom we encounter, so that many souls may be brought back to the feet of thy Divine Son. Amen.
Jour 9 : Our Lady, Reconciler of Sinners
Méditation
The Church has bestowed upon Our Lady of La Salette the glorious title, “Reconciler of Sinners.” This is the sum of her message and her mission. She comes not to condemn, but to call us back. Her tears are shed to soften our hardened hearts. Her words are spoken to lead us to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where the Blood of her Son washes away our sins. She is the great mediatrix, the bridge between fallen humanity and a merciful God. Let us fly to her with confidence and place our conversion in her maternal hands.
Prière du jour
O Our Lady of La Salette, Reconciler of Sinners, we consecrate ourselves to thee. Take our hearts, our souls, and our wills. Reconcile us with thy Son. Reconcile us with the Church. Reconcile us with one another. Be thou our advocate in life, our comfort in death, and our guide to the eternal kingdom, where with thee we may praise God forever and ever. Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer for Each Day
Remember, Our Lady of La Salette, true Mother of Sorrows, the tears which thou didst shed for us on Calvary. Be mindful also of the continual care which thou dost take to shield us from the justice of God, and see whether thou canst now abandon thy child. Animated by this consoling thought, we cast ourselves at thy feet, despite our infidelities and ingratitude. Reject not our prayers, O Virgin of Reconciliation, but convert us, obtain for us the grace to love Jesus Christ above all things, and to console thee by a life holy and pleasing to God, that we may one day be able to see thee in heaven. Amen.
Our Lady of La Salette, Reconciler of Sinners, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
