Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer

Behold at thy feet, O Mother of Perpetual Help, a wretched sinner who has recourse to thee and confides in thee. O Mother of mercy, have pity on me. I hear thee called by all the refuge and the hope of sinners; be then my refuge and my hope. Assist me, for the love of Jesus Christ; stretch forth thy hand to a miserable fallen creature, who recommends himself to thee, and who devotes himself to thy service for ever. I bless and thank Almighty God, who in His mercy has given me this confidence in thee, which I hold to be a pledge of my eternal salvation. It is true that in the past I have miserably fallen into sin, because I had not recourse to thee. I know that with thy help I shall conquer. I know, too, that thou wilt assist me, if I recommend myself to thee; but I fear that in the occasion of falling, I may neglect to call upon thee, and so may be lost. This grace, then, I ask of thee, and this I beg, with all the fervor of my soul, that in all the attacks of hell I may ever have recourse to thee. O Mary, help me; O Mother of Perpetual Help, never suffer me to lose my God. Amen.

Jour 1 : Day One: Our Refuge in Need

    Méditation

Consider that the title “Perpetual Help” was given to our Blessed Mother not by the devotion of the faithful alone, but by her own desire. This holy icon, so rich in meaning, speaks of her constant and ready assistance to all who call upon her. She is a fortress for the besieged, a harbor for the shipwrecked, a solace for the afflicted. In every trial and tribulation of life, she is our unfailing refuge. Let us, therefore, approach her with the boundless confidence of a child running to its mother’s arms, certain of her protection.

    Prière du jour

O Mother of Perpetual Help, whose very name inspires confidence, I come before thee in my poverty. I am beset by trials and temptations. The world, the flesh, and the devil conspire against my soul. Be thou my refuge. In thy hands, I place my cares and my fears. Shelter me under the mantle of thy protection, and guide me safely through the storms of this life to the eternal haven of heaven. Amen.

Jour 2 : Day Two: Mother of Sorrows

    Méditation

Gaze upon the holy icon. See the sorrow in the eyes of Mary. She beholds the vision of her Son’s future Passion, symbolized by the instruments held by the Archangels. Her heart is pierced with a sword of grief, as foretold by Simeon. Yet, in her sorrow, she does not despair. She holds her Son, offering Him and herself for our redemption. She understands our sorrows because she has borne the greatest of all. She is truly the Comforter of the afflicted, for she unites our small sufferings with the infinite merits of her Son’s Passion.

    Prière du jour

O Mother of Sorrows, who didst stand bravely at the foot of the Cross, teach me to bear my own crosses with patience and love. When my heart is heavy with grief and my soul is in anguish, remind me of thy sorrows and the sufferings of thy Divine Son. Obtain for me the grace to unite my trials to His, that they may become a source of merit for my soul and for the souls of others. Amen.

Jour 3 : Day Three: Hope of Sinners

    Méditation

Our Lady holds the Child Jesus, who clings to her as if in fear. This is to teach us that even He, in His humanity, sought refuge in His Mother. How much more, then, should we, who are weak and prone to sin, fly to her protection! She is the immaculate vessel, the Ark of the New Covenant, untouched by any stain of sin. Yet, she is not distant from us. God has made her the channel of His mercy, the advocate for sinners. No matter how great our faults, her maternal heart is always open to us, ready to plead our cause before the throne of God.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Refuge of Sinners, I, a miserable sinner, cast myself at thy feet. My sins are many and grievous, and I am unworthy to lift my eyes to heaven. But I know that thou art the hope of the hopeless. I do not trust in my own merits, which are none, but in thy powerful intercession. Speak a word for me to thy Son, obtain for me true contrition for my sins and the grace of a firm amendment. O Mother of Perpetual Help, save me. Amen.

Jour 4 : Day Four: Help of the Afflicted

    Méditation

The life of man upon earth is a warfare, filled with afflictions of body and soul. Sickness, poverty, anxiety, and loss are the common lot of humanity. In these moments of distress, our hearts naturally seek a comforter. Who can better comfort us than she who is called “Health of the Sick” and “Comforter of the Afflicted”? Her compassion is as boundless as the ocean. Countless miracles and graces have been obtained through her intercession, proving that she is ever attentive to the cries of her suffering children.

    Prière du jour

Most loving Mother of Perpetual Help, behold the afflictions that weigh upon my soul and body. Thou knowest my necessities and my pains. I come to thee as a sick person to the physician, as a poor man to a rich queen. Do not abandon me in my distress. Show thyself a true mother by obtaining for me from thy Divine Son the relief I seek in my present affliction, and the strength to bear my cross in conformity with God’s holy will. Amen.

Jour 5 : Day Five: Our Guide in Doubt

    Méditation

In the icon, Mary’s eyes are not fixed on her Son, but on us. Her gaze is one of profound compassion and gentle invitation. She is the Star of the Sea, guiding sailors through the dark and treacherous waters of life. When we are lost in doubt, uncertain of the path to take, when the darkness of confusion surrounds us, we must lift our eyes to Mary. Her wisdom, a gift from the Holy Ghost, will enlighten our minds and direct our steps on the path of righteousness and truth.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Seat of Wisdom, the path of life is often dark and I am prone to wander. My mind is clouded with doubt and my will is weak. Be thou my guide and my light. Dispel the darkness of error and uncertainty. Obtain for me from the Holy Ghost the light to know God’s will for me, and the courage to follow it faithfully, no matter the cost. Lead me, O Star of the Sea, to the safe port of salvation. Amen.

Jour 6 : Day Six: Strength of the Weak

    Méditation

Consider the hands of Our Lady. She does not grasp her Son tightly but presents Him to us, her hands open in a gesture of offering. Her left hand supports Him, signifying her role as our strength and support. We are weak, easily swayed by temptation and discouraged by obstacles. But in Mary, we find a pillar of strength. She who crushed the head of the serpent will give us the power to overcome our spiritual enemies. To rely on Mary is not a sign of weakness, but of true wisdom, for we draw upon the strength that God Himself has given her.

    Prière du jour

O Virgin most powerful, I acknowledge my weakness and my inconstancy. By myself, I can do nothing. I fall repeatedly and lose heart in the struggle for virtue. But with thee, I can do all things. I place my weakness in thy hands. Strengthen my feeble will, fortify my resolutions, and obtain for me the grace of perseverance in good. Be thou my strength in temptation, my support in trial, and my victory in the spiritual combat. Amen.

Jour 7 : Day Seven: Queen of Heaven and Earth

    Méditation

The star on Mary’s veil proclaims her as the Star of the Sea, but the golden crown placed upon her head and that of her Son signifies her royal dignity. She is the Queen of Angels and of Saints, the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her queenship is not one of earthly power, but of love and service. Because she was the most humble handmaid of the Lord, God has exalted her above all creatures. All graces flow through her royal hands. Let us approach our Queen with reverence, but also with the loving confidence that she uses her power for the good of her subjects, her children.

    Prière du jour

O Queen of Heaven and Earth, I salute thee and acknowledge thy universal dominion. Reign, O glorious Queen, in my heart and in my life. I consecrate to thee my mind, my will, my senses, and my entire being. Make me thy faithful subject, ever zealous for thy glory and for the extension of the kingdom of thy Son. Use me as an instrument in thy royal hands to bring other souls to love and serve thee. Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Amen.

Jour 8 : Day Eight: Dispenser of All Graces

    Méditation

It is the constant teaching of the Church’s saints and doctors that God has willed that all graces should come to us through Mary. She is the neck of the Mystical Body, through which all life flows from Christ the Head to us, the members. She is the aqueduct through which the fountains of divine grace are channeled to the world. Therefore, to go to Mary is to go to the very source of grace. Whatever we ask of her, if it be for our salvation, she can and will obtain it for us from her Divine Son, who can refuse His Mother nothing.

    Prière du jour

O Mediatrix of all graces, Mother of Perpetual Help, to whom shall I go in my poverty if not to thee, who art the treasurer of the Lord? Thou holdest the key to the storehouse of divine mercy. I come to thee with empty hands and a poor heart, begging for the spiritual and temporal graces I need. I ask not for wealth or honors, but for a greater love for God, a deeper sorrow for my sins, and the grace of final perseverance. Obtain these for me, O bountiful dispenser of God’s gifts. Amen.

Jour 9 : Day Nine: Our Perpetual Help

    Méditation

We conclude our novena by meditating on the sweet title itself: “Perpetual Help.” Not help for a day, or a year, but perpetual, constant, unfailing help. This is the promise contained in her name. It is a promise for every moment of our lives: in joy and in sorrow, in health and in sickness, in peace and in temptation, in life and at the hour of our death. Let us resolve today to never forget our Mother of Perpetual Help, to call upon her in every need, and to spread devotion to her, so that others may also experience the power and tenderness of her maternal care.

    Prière du jour

O Mother of Perpetual Help, for nine days I have knelt at thy feet, imploring thy assistance. I thank thee for the graces I have received and for those thou wilt yet obtain for me. I consecrate myself anew to thy service. I promise to have recourse to thee in all my needs and to make thy blessed name known and loved. Be with me always, O my Mother. Be my help in life, and above all, at the hour of my death, that I may come to praise and thank thee for all eternity in heaven. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer

O Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the dispenser of all the gifts which God grants to us miserable sinners; and for this end He has made thee so powerful, so rich, and so bountiful, that thou mayest help us in our misery. Thou art the advocate of the most wretched and abandoned sinners who have recourse to thee; come then to my help, dearest Mother, for I recommend myself to thee. In thy hands I place my eternal salvation, and to thee I entrust my soul. Count me among thy most devoted servants; take me under thy protection, and it is enough for me. For, if thou protect me, dear Mother, I fear nothing; not from my sins, because thou wilt obtain for me the pardon of them; nor from the devils, because thou art more powerful than all hell together; nor even from Jesus, my Judge Himself, because by one prayer from thee He will be appeased. But one thing I fear: that in the hour of temptation I may neglect to call on thee, and thus perish miserably. Obtain for me, then, the pardon of my sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace ever to have recourse to thee, O Mother of Perpetual Help. Amen.
