Novena to Saint Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer for Each Day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O most merciful Jesus, I come before Thee to honor Thy beloved servant, Saint Mary Magdalene, a true model of penance and of love. I acknowledge my own sinfulness and my need for Thy divine mercy. Through the intercession of this great saint, who washed Thy feet with her tears, I humbly ask for the grace to make this novena with a devout and contrite heart.

(Here mention your specific intentions for this novena.)

O glorious Saint Mary Magdalene, who didst so ardently love thy Master, obtain for me the graces I seek, if they be in accordance with God’s holy will. Amen.

Jour 1 : Day 1: The Grace of Repentance

    Méditation

Let us consider how Saint Mary Magdalene, once a notorious sinner, was moved by grace to seek the Saviour. She came into the house of Simon the Pharisee, and casting herself at the feet of Jesus, she washed them with her tears, wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed them, and anointed them with precious ointment. By this act of profound humility and sorrow, she acknowledged her unworthiness and placed all her hope in the mercy of the Lord. Her silent tears spoke more eloquently than any words, expressing a heart broken with contrition for her past offenses against the Divine Majesty.

    Prière du jour

O blessed Saint Mary Magdalene, model of penitents, who didst obtain pardon for thy many sins by the torrent of thy tears, I implore thy intercession. Obtain for me the grace of true sorrow for my sins, that I may detest them with all my heart and resolve firmly to amend my life. As thou didst wash the feet of Jesus with thy tears, so may I purify my soul in the sacrament of penance, and never again stray from the path of His commandments. Amen.

Jour 2 : Day 2: The Fervor of Divine Love

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the words of our Lord concerning Mary Magdalene: “Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much.” Her love was the fruit of her forgiveness. Having experienced the abyss of sin and the infinite height of God’s mercy, her heart overflowed with a gratitude and love that knew no bounds. She understood that to whom much is forgiven, the same loveth much. This divine love transformed her completely, turning her from a slave of sin into a fervent adorer of Christ.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Saint Mary Magdalene, whose heart was set aflame with love for Christ upon receiving His pardon, teach me to love my Saviour as thou didst. I am a poor sinner, often cold and ungrateful, yet He has shown me immeasurable mercy. Pray for me, that the knowledge of my own forgiven sinfulness may kindle in my heart a fire of divine love, which will consume all earthly attachments and direct my every thought, word, and deed to God alone. Amen.

Jour 3 : Day 3: Fidelity at the Cross

    Méditation

Consider the unwavering fidelity of Saint Mary Magdalene at the foot of the Cross. While many of the disciples fled in fear, she remained with the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John, steadfast in her devotion amidst the sorrows of Calvary. She was not deterred by the cruelty of the soldiers or the scorn of the crowd. Her love for her Master gave her the strength to endure this trial, sharing in His Passion and offering Him the consolation of her faithful presence. Her heart was pierced with sorrow, yet her faith did not waver.

    Prière du jour

O courageous Saint Mary Magdalene, who didst stand faithfully at the foot of the Cross, obtain for me the grace of perseverance in times of trial. When I am faced with suffering, desolation, or the contempt of the world, grant that I may not abandon my Lord. Inspire me with thy fortitude, that I may unite my small crosses with the great sacrifice of Christ and remain ever faithful to Him, even unto death. Amen.

Jour 4 : Day 4: Hope in the Darkness

    Méditation

Let us reflect on Mary Magdalene’s sorrowful vigil after the Lord’s burial. Her heart was entombed with Christ. The Sabbath was a day of profound grief and longing for her. Yet, even in the darkness of this loss, a flicker of hope remained. Her love compelled her to return to the sepulchre at the earliest possible moment, bringing sweet spices to anoint the body of her beloved Master. She did not yet understand the mystery of the Resurrection, but her love urged her to perform this last act of devotion.

    Prière du jour

O devoted Saint Mary Magdalene, whose love for Jesus did not end with His death, I beseech thy prayers. In my moments of darkness, when God seems distant and my hope grows dim, teach me to keep vigil in prayer. Grant me a love so strong that it seeks Jesus even in the tomb of a desolate heart, and a hope so firm that it waits with confidence for the dawn of His consolation. Amen.

Jour 5 : Day 5: The First Witness of the Resurrection

    Méditation

Consider the immense joy of Saint Mary Magdalene when she became the first witness of the Resurrection. Seeking the dead, she found the Living. At first, she did not recognize Him, mistaking Him for the gardener. But when Jesus called her by her name, “Mary,” her eyes were opened, and her heart leaped with an indescribable joy. She responded with a single word of recognition and love: “Rabboni!” which is to say, Master. This personal encounter with the Risen Christ was the reward for her faithful seeking and ardent love.

    Prière du jour

O blessed Saint Mary Magdalene, first witness of the Resurrection, who didst hear the Risen Saviour call thee by name, obtain for me the grace to hear His voice in my own life. Pray that my eyes may be opened to recognize His presence in the Blessed Sacrament, in the Holy Scriptures, and in the events of my daily life. May I respond with a love as pure and a joy as profound as thine, crying out from my heart, “My Master!” Amen.

Jour 6 : Day 6: The Apostle to the Apostles

    Méditation

Let us meditate on the glorious commission given to Mary Magdalene by our Lord Himself: “Go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” He who had cast seven devils out of her now made her the first messenger of His triumph over sin and death. She who had been a public sinner became the “Apostle to the Apostles,” sent to announce the greatest news in human history to the very pillars of the Church. This shows the wondrous way God exalts the humble and uses the lowly to proclaim His glory.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Saint Mary Magdalene, Apostle to the Apostles, who didst faithfully carry the news of the Resurrection to the disciples, enkindle in me a zealous desire to share the Gospel. Banish from my heart all fear and human respect, that I may bear witness to the truth of Christ’s victory in my words and actions. Grant that, through thy intercession, I may become a worthy instrument for bringing souls to the knowledge and love of our Risen Lord. Amen.

Jour 7 : Day 7: The Contemplative Life

    Méditation

Let us consider the ancient and pious tradition of Saint Mary Magdalene’s later life. It is held that she, with Lazarus and Martha, traveled to the shores of Gaul, and there she retired to a desolate cave at Sainte-Baume. For thirty years, she lived a life of solitude, prayer, and severe penance. Her only nourishment was the Holy Eucharist, brought to her by angels, and her only occupation was the contemplation of the divine mysteries. Having loved much on earth, she sought only to be united with her beloved Master in heaven.

    Prière du jour

O great Saint Mary Magdalene, model of contemplatives, who didst spend thy final years in solitary prayer and penance, obtain for me a love for silence and recollection. In the midst of this noisy world, help me to find a secret cavern in my heart where I can converse with God. Teach me to detach myself from earthly comforts and to find my true nourishment in the contemplation of heavenly things and in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

Jour 8 : Day 8: The Power of a Witness

    Méditation

Let us reflect upon Saint Mary Magdalene as a powerful preacher, not only through her words but through the witness of her transformed life. Her very existence was a sermon on the infinite mercy of God. From the depths of sin, she was raised to the heights of sanctity. Her story proclaims that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. Her love, her sorrow, her fidelity, and her joy all speak of the power of Christ to make all things new. She is a patroness for all who are called to preach the Good News, for her life is the Good News made manifest.

    Prière du jour

O holy Saint Mary Magdalene, whose life is a testament to the power of divine grace, I ask thy intercession for all preachers, missionaries, and teachers of the faith. Obtain for them the grace to proclaim the truth with conviction and love. Pray also for me, that my own life may be a credible witness to the Gospel, and that by my example of conversion and charity, I may draw others to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the fount of all mercy. Amen.

Jour 9 : Day 9: The Triumph of Love

    Méditation

On this final day, let us gather all the virtues of Saint Mary Magdalene into one great flame of love. From the sorrowful penitent at the feet of Jesus to the joyful messenger of the Resurrection, and finally to the silent contemplative in the cave, her entire life was a journey of love. She sought Jesus, she found Him, and she never left Him. She is a sublime model of the soul’s progression in the spiritual life: from purification through penance, to illumination in discipleship, and finally to union in contemplation. Her glory in heaven is the eternal reward of a love that was stronger than sin and death.

    Prière du jour

O most glorious Saint Mary Magdalene, perfect model of a lover of Christ, who didst pass from the darkness of sin to the brilliant light of grace and glory, I rejoice in thy triumph. As I conclude this novena, I place all my petitions in thy hands. Above all, I ask thee to obtain for me a share in thy great love for Jesus. May I love Him above all things, serve Him faithfully in this life, and be united with thee in praising His infinite mercy for all eternity. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer for Each Day

O God, whose only-begotten Son chose Mary Magdalene to be the first to announce the joy of the Resurrection, grant, we beseech Thee, that by her intercession and example we may proclaim the living Christ and come to see Him reigning in Thy glory. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

(Recite one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be for the intentions of the novena.)

Saint Mary Magdalene, pray for us.
