Novena to Saint John the Baptist

Saint John (Baptist) - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer for each day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O glorious Saint John the Baptist, greatest prophet of the Old and New Testaments, who wast greater than all the saints and yet the most humble; who didst prepare the way for the Messiah, and didst die a martyr for the truth: we come before thee with confidence to implore thy intercession in this novena.

Thou who wast sanctified in thy mother’s womb and didst leap for joy at the presence of Jesus and Mary, obtain for us the grace to live a life of holiness and purity. Thou who wast a voice crying in the wilderness, obtain for us the courage to proclaim our faith. Thou who didst point to the Lamb of God, obtain for us a tender and fervent devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jour 1 : Day 1: The Miraculous Birth

    Méditation

Let us consider how the birth of Saint John the Baptist was a miracle of God’s grace. To his aged and barren parents, Elizabeth and Zechariah, an angel announced that they would conceive a son who would be great in the sight of the Lord. This miraculous conception, which filled his parents with an unspeakable joy, teaches us that nothing is impossible for God, and that He chooses the humble and the lowly to accomplish His greatest works. Let us learn from this to place all our trust in God’s Providence, even when our circumstances seem hopeless, for He who brought forth the Precursor from a barren womb can bring forth grace and virtue from our barren souls.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Saint John the Baptist, who wast sanctified in thy mother’s womb and born to be the herald of the Most High, obtain for us, we beseech thee, a lively and unwavering faith in the power of God. As thou didst leap for joy at the presence of thy Saviour, so may our hearts rejoice in His divine will for us. Grant that we may recognize God’s hand in all the events of our lives and trust in His merciful plan, no matter how mysterious it may seem. Amen.

Jour 2 : Day 2: The Life in the Desert

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the hidden life of Saint John in the desert. From his youth, he withdrew from the world, its vanities and its dangers, to prepare for his great mission. Clothed in camel’s hair, with a leathern girdle about his loins, his meat was locusts and wild honey. In solitude, fasting, and prayer, he mortified his flesh and strengthened his spirit, becoming a pure and worthy instrument for the Lord. His example rebukes our love of comfort and ease, and calls us to embrace a spirit of penance, that we may subdue our passions and make straight the way of the Lord in our own hearts.

    Prière du jour

O great Saint John, model of penitents, who didst choose the austerity of the wilderness over the comforts of the world, obtain for us the grace to despise worldly pleasures and to embrace voluntary mortification. Teach us to fast from sin, to pray without ceasing, and to detach our hearts from all that hinders our union with God. By thy powerful intercession, may we acquire a true spirit of penance, that we may be found worthy of the kingdom which thou didst proclaim. Amen.

Jour 3 : Day 3: The Voice of Humility

    Méditation

Let us consider the profound humility of Saint John the Baptist. Though multitudes flocked to him, and some believed him to be the Christ, he never sought glory for himself. He was but a voice, crying in the wilderness, preparing the way for another. He declared himself unworthy to loose the latchet of the Saviour’s shoes. His whole mission was to decrease that Christ might increase. This perfect self-effacement is the mark of a true servant of God. Let us examine our own hearts for the poison of pride, and learn from the Baptist to seek only the glory of God in all our actions.

    Prière du jour

O most humble Saint John, who didst ever point away from thyself and toward the Lamb of God, crush within us all pride and vanity. Obtain for us the grace of a true and profound humility, that we may understand our own nothingness and God’s infinite greatness. Teach us to rejoice in being forgotten and esteemed as nothing, so that Christ alone may be seen, known, and loved through us. May we, like thee, decrease, so that He may increase in our souls for ever. Amen.

Jour 4 : Day 4: The Preaching of Repentance

    Méditation

Let us meditate on the fearless preaching of Saint John. He did not flatter the powerful nor fear the multitudes. To all, he preached a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. He called the Pharisees and Sadducees a ‘brood of vipers’ and demanded they bring forth fruit worthy of penance. His words were a fire, consuming hypocrisy and calling souls to conversion. He spoke the truth without compromise, preparing hearts to receive the Saviour. Let us ask for a share in his courage, to bear witness to the truth of the Gospel in a world that so often rejects it.

    Prière du jour

O fearless Precursor of the Truth, who didst not shrink from rebuking sin in every state of life, grant us the courage to live and proclaim our Catholic faith. Protect us from all human respect and cowardice. Fill our hearts with a holy zeal for the salvation of souls and the honor of God, that we may speak the truth in charity and, by our example, lead others to repentance and to the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Jour 5 : Day 5: The Baptism of the Lord

    Méditation

Let us contemplate the sublime moment when Saint John baptized our Lord in the river Jordan. Seeing Jesus approach, John’s humility was stirred, and he cried out, ‘I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me?’ Yet, in obedience, he fulfilled the will of God. At that moment, the heavens were opened, the Holy Ghost descended like a dove, and the voice of the Father was heard, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ By this act, Saint John sanctified the waters and participated in the inauguration of Christ’s public ministry. Let us pray for the purity of heart necessary to recognize and adore Jesus in our own lives.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Saint John, who wast found worthy to baptize the King of Glory, obtain for us the grace of a profound reverence for the sacred mysteries. By the memory of that blessed moment at the Jordan, purify our souls from every stain of sin. Grant that, with a clean heart and a humble spirit, we may worthily approach the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist, wherein we receive that same Lord whom thou didst baptize. Amen.

Jour 6 : Day 6: The Witness to the Lamb of God

    Méditation

Let us consider Saint John’s primary mission: to bear witness to Christ. Seeing Jesus walking by, he declared to his own disciples, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world.’ In this single phrase, he revealed the Saviour’s identity and redemptive mission. He did not seek to keep his followers for himself, but immediately directed them to Jesus. This is the essence of all true apostolate: to lead souls to Christ. Let us learn from Saint John to make our entire lives a testimony to Jesus, pointing others to Him by our words and our deeds.

    Prière du jour

O faithful witness, Saint John the Baptist, who didst recognize and announce the Lamb of God, grant us a share in thy clear-sighted faith. Open the eyes of our souls that we may behold Jesus in our daily lives, in the poor, and in the Blessed Sacrament. Make us zealous apostles, eager to share the good news of salvation with all whom we meet, so that many souls may be drawn to the true fold of Christ the King. Amen.

Jour 7 : Day 7: The Rebuke of Herod

    Méditation

Let us meditate on the heroic fortitude of Saint John in rebuking King Herod for his adulterous union with his brother’s wife, Herodias. Unafraid of the king’s power or wrath, the Baptist declared, ‘It is not lawful for thee to have her.’ For this defense of God’s holy law of marriage, he was cast into prison. He preferred chains and confinement to silence in the face of sin. His example teaches us that we must obey God rather than men, and that we must be prepared to suffer for the sake of justice and truth, no matter the cost.

    Prière du jour

O invincible champion of justice, Saint John the Baptist, who didst not fear the wrath of kings in defense of the divine law, strengthen us in our struggles against evil. Obtain for us the fortitude to stand for the sanctity of marriage and family, and to oppose the corrupting influences of the world. Grant that we may never be silent through fear, but may always defend the truth with prudence and courage, for the greater glory of God. Amen.

Jour 8 : Day 8: Imprisonment and Perseverance

    Méditation

Let us consider Saint John in his dark prison cell. Though he was the greatest born of women, he was not exempt from trial and apparent darkness. From his dungeon, he sent his disciples to Jesus with the question, ‘Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?’ He did this not for his own sake, for his faith was firm, but for the sake of his disciples, that they might see the works of Christ and believe in Him directly. Even in his suffering, his sole concern was to lead others to the Saviour. Let us learn from him to persevere in faith during our own trials and to use our sufferings for the good of other souls.

    Prière du jour

O patient Saint John, who didst endure the darkness of the prison with unwavering faith, be our comfort and guide in times of trial and desolation. When our faith is tested and the way seems unclear, intercede for us that we may persevere in hope. Teach us to unite our sufferings to the Cross of Christ and to offer them for the conversion of sinners and the strengthening of our brethren in the faith. Amen.

Jour 9 : Day 9: The Crown of Martyrdom

    Méditation

Let us contemplate the glorious martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. He was beheaded at the whim of a wicked king, a victim of the hatred of Herodias and the vanity of a dancing girl. His life, which began with a miracle, ended in a bloody sacrifice. He thus became the first martyr of the New Covenant, sealing with his blood the testimony he had borne to the Truth. His death was not a defeat, but a triumph, opening for him the gates of heaven, where he would soon be joined by the very Lamb of God for whom he had prepared the way. Let us ask for the grace of final perseverance, that we too may be faithful unto death.

    Prière du jour

O glorious Martyr, Saint John the Baptist, who didst lay down thy life for truth and justice, prepare us for our own final hour. Obtain for us the grace to live each day in preparation for death, and to die in the state of grace, fortified by the Sacraments of the Church. By thy powerful intercession, may we be granted the gift of final perseverance, so that after a life of faithful service to God, we may join thee in praising the Most Holy Trinity in heaven for all eternity. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive
