Prière Introductive
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
O Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Hope, who didst appear in the humble village of Pontmain to bring comfort and peace to thy children in a time of great affliction, look down with pity upon us who have recourse to thee in our needs. Thou didst ask the children to pray, promising that thy Son would be moved by their supplications. Filled with this same confidence, we come before thee to begin this holy novena. Obtain for us, we beseech thee, the grace to pray with fervour, humility, and perseverance, that we may be found worthy of the heavenly favours we seek to obtain through thy powerful intercession. Amen.
Jour 1 : The Apparition of Hope
Méditation
Let us contemplate the scene at Pontmain on that cold January evening. France was ravaged by war, and fear gripped the hearts of the people. It was in this darkness that Heaven opened. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared, not to the great or the learned, but to simple, innocent children. She came as a beacon of light in the midst of despair. This first moment of the apparition teaches us that even in our darkest hours, God does not abandon us. He sends His own Mother to reassure us, to remind us that hope is never lost for those who trust in Him.
Prière du jour
O Mary, who didst choose the humble to manifest thy glory, grant us the simple faith of the children of Pontmain. In our moments of trial and anxiety, when all seems lost, help us to lift our eyes to thee, our Star of Hope. Banish from our hearts all discouragement, and fill us with an unshakeable confidence in the goodness of thy Divine Son. Amen.
Jour 2 : The Blue Robe and Golden Stars
Méditation
The children beheld Our Lady clothed in a robe of deep blue, spangled with golden stars, like the firmament on a clear night. This celestial garment reminds us of her title, Queen of Heaven. The stars represent the countless graces and virtues that adorn her soul. She is the masterpiece of God’s creation, more beautiful than all the angels and saints. As we gaze upon her in spirit, let us remember that she is also our Mother, and she desires to clothe us, her children, with the virtues that will make us shine like stars in the kingdom of her Son.
Prière du jour
O Queen of Heaven, robed in celestial splendour, we venerate thy immaculate beauty. Clothe our souls, we beseech thee, with the mantle of thy protection. Adorn us with the golden stars of faith, hope, and charity, that we may one day be worthy to contemplate thy glory in paradise and to shine with thee in the eternal presence of God. Amen.
Jour 3 : The Sweetness of Her Gaze
Méditation
The visionaries of Pontmain were captivated by the smile and the gentle gaze of the Blessed Virgin. Her smile was one of ineffable tenderness, a mother’s smile that dispels all fear. It was a look of love, compassion, and encouragement. In this world so often marked by harshness and indifference, let us turn to Mary’s gaze. In her eyes, we find no condemnation, but only a merciful invitation to draw closer to her Son. Her smile assures us that we are loved, understood, and awaited in our heavenly homeland.
Prière du jour
O most sweet Virgin Mary, turn thine eyes of mercy towards us. Let the gentle radiance of thy smile penetrate our hearts, healing our wounds and soothing our sorrows. Teach us to look upon others with the same charity and kindness that thou dost show to us. May thy loving gaze be our comfort in life and our strength at the hour of our death. Amen.
Jour 4 : The Banner: ‘But pray, my children’
Méditation
As the villagers gathered and began to pray, a banner unrolled at the feet of the beautiful Lady. On it, in golden letters, appeared the words: ‘Mais priez, mes enfants’ – ‘But pray, my children.’ This is the heart of the message of Pontmain. Prayer is the key that unlocks the treasures of God’s mercy. Our Lady does not offer a complex solution to the world’s problems; she points to the simple, yet all-powerful, means of prayer. She calls us ‘my children,’ reminding us of our intimate bond with her and her maternal solicitude for our welfare.
Prière du jour
O Mother of Hope, who dost exhort us to pray, we confess our weakness and inconsistency. Too often we rely on our own strength and neglect to have recourse to God. Obtain for us the spirit of prayer. Teach us to pray with confidence, perseverance, and love, so that our lives may become a continual conversation with our Heavenly Father, through thy Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Jour 5 : The Banner: ‘God will soon answer you’
Méditation
Following the first message, a second appeared: ‘Dieu vous exaucera en peu de temps’ – ‘God will soon answer you.’ This is a promise of immense comfort. It assures us that our prayers are not in vain. God hears every sigh, every petition that rises from a sincere heart. Though His answer may not always be what we expect or when we expect it, He always responds in the way that is best for our eternal salvation. The promise at Pontmain strengthens our faith and encourages us to persevere in prayer, knowing that our Heavenly Father is attentive to our needs.
Prière du jour
O Mary, who didst convey to us the promise of a swift response from God, strengthen our faith when we are tempted to doubt. Help us to trust in God’s perfect timing and His infinite wisdom. Grant that we may accept His will with patience and love, confident that He who hears the prayers of His children will never fail to provide for all our needs. Amen.
Jour 6 : The Banner: ‘My Son allows Himself to be touched’
Méditation
The final part of the written message was: ‘Mon Fils se laisse toucher’ – ‘My Son allows Himself to be touched.’ These words reveal the profound mystery of God’s love and the efficacy of prayer. The Almighty God, in His infinite mercy, condescends to be ‘touched’ or ‘moved’ by the prayers of His creatures. Our supplications, united with the intercession of Mary, can influence the heart of Jesus. This is not because He is changeable, but because it is part of His divine plan that our prayers should be a real cause in the order of grace. What a powerful motive to pray with all our hearts!
Prière du jour
O Mediatrix of all graces, who knowest so well the heart of thy Son, teach us how to pray in a manner that ‘touches’ Him. Unite our poor prayers to thine own, that they may become pleasing to Him. May our hearts be so filled with love and contrition that Jesus, seeing in us a reflection of thy own dispositions, may be moved to grant us mercy, pardon, and all the graces we implore. Amen.
Jour 7 : The Red Cross and the Crucifix
Méditation
As the message on the banner faded, a red cross with a crucifix appeared in Our Lady’s hands. The figure of her Son upon the cross was a vivid red, a symbol of His Precious Blood shed for our salvation. At the top of the cross, a white banner bore the name ‘Jesus Christ.’ Our Lady presented her suffering Son to the world. This is the source of all hope and the answer to all prayers. All grace flows from the sacrifice of Calvary. Mary at Pontmain does not draw attention to herself, but directs our gaze to Jesus Crucified, the one and only Saviour of mankind.
Prière du jour
O Mother of Sorrows, who didst stand at the foot of the Cross, present to us thy crucified Son. By the merits of His most Precious Blood, we beg for the forgiveness of our sins and the conversion of the whole world. Grant that we may never forget the price of our redemption, and that we may learn to embrace our own crosses with patience and love, in union with the sufferings of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Jour 8 : The Sorrow of the Mother
Méditation
While holding the crucifix, the Blessed Virgin’s joyful smile vanished, and her face was overcome with a profound sadness. She did not weep, but her sorrow was immense as she contemplated her Son’s passion and the sins of the world that caused it. Her sorrow is a share in the agony of Christ. It is a mother’s grief for her children who offend God and risk their eternal salvation. Let us console the sorrowful heart of Mary by resolving to amend our lives, to flee from sin, and to make reparation for the outrages committed against her Divine Son.
Prière du jour
O most sorrowful Mother, whose heart was pierced with a sword of grief, we desire to console thee. Forgive us our sins, which caused the passion of thy Son and which continue to afflict thy tender heart. Grant us a true and lasting sorrow for our offenses, and the grace to avoid all that is displeasing to God, that we may bring joy, instead of sorrow, to thy immaculate heart. Amen.
Jour 9 : The White Veil and the Final Smile
Méditation
At the end of the apparition, as the prayers concluded, a white veil slowly rose from Our Lady’s feet, gradually covering the vision until it disappeared. Before she was completely hidden, the children saw her smile once more. This final smile was a seal of peace and a promise of protection. The white veil, a symbol of her purity and her hidden life, reminds us that while she has returned to Heaven, she remains with us, covering us with her maternal mantle. The vision ended, but the hope it brought remained, and indeed, the invading army inexplicably halted its advance on the region that very night.
Prière du jour
O Our Lady of Pontmain, who didst depart leaving behind a smile of peace, we thank thee for this novena and for all the graces we have received through it. Cover us now and always with the white veil of thy protection. Be our guide through the darkness of this life, until we may see thee, no longer in a fleeting vision, but face to face in the eternal light of Heaven, where we shall praise and bless thy Son forever. Amen.
