Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and our most tender Mother, we fly to thee to find refuge in thy Immaculate Heart. Behold us at thy feet, come to implore thy mercy and to lay before thee the petitions of this novena. We are poor sinners, unworthy of thy graces, yet we place all our confidence in thee. Through the mysteries of the life, death, and glory of thy Son, which we commemorate in the recitation of the Holy Rosary, we beseech thee to hear our prayers and to grant us the favours we ask in this novena, if they be for the greater glory of God and the salvation of our souls. Amen.
Jour 1 : Day 1: For the Virtue of Faith
Méditation
Let us meditate on the First Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation. The Archangel Gabriel appears to the Blessed Virgin Mary and announces that she is to be the Mother of God. With perfect faith and profound humility, she accepts the divine will, saying: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.” Through her faith, the Word was made flesh. Let us consider how a lively faith is the foundation of all spiritual life, and how readily we ought to submit our intellect and will to God’s holy law.
Prière du jour
O Virgin most faithful, who by thy humble consent didst conceive the Son of God, obtain for us a strong and unwavering faith. Grant that we may believe with all our hearts the sacred truths of our religion, and live according to its precepts. Through thy intercession, may we never doubt God’s promises and may our faith be made manifest in works of charity. Amen.
Jour 2 : Day 2: For the Virtue of Charity
Méditation
Let us meditate on the Second Joyful Mystery, the Visitation. Mary, having conceived the Saviour, goes with haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth. She does not remain absorbed in her own sublime dignity, but sets out to perform an act of charity. At her greeting, John the Baptist is sanctified in his mother’s womb. Let us learn from Mary the practice of fraternal charity, and how we must carry Jesus to others through our words and deeds, serving them with humility and joy.
Prière du jour
O Mary, model of perfect charity, who didst carry Jesus in thy womb to sanctify the home of Elizabeth, fill our hearts with a sincere and active love for our neighbour. Teach us to forget ourselves for the good of others, to rejoice in their joys, to compassionate their sorrows, and to see and serve Jesus in every person we meet. Amen.
Jour 3 : Day 3: For Poverty of Spirit
Méditation
Let us meditate on the Third Joyful Mystery, the Nativity of our Lord. The King of Heaven is born in a humble stable, in poverty and want. Mary and Joseph adore Him, poor in worldly goods but rich in grace. The shepherds and the Magi come to worship Him, recognizing majesty in lowliness. Let us learn from this mystery a holy detachment from the vanities and riches of the world, and a love for holy poverty and simplicity.
Prière du jour
O Mother of the Divine Child of Bethlehem, who didst embrace poverty with love, obtain for us the grace of a true poverty of spirit. Free our hearts from all inordinate attachment to earthly possessions, that we may desire only the treasures of heaven and find our true riches in possessing God alone. Amen.
Jour 4 : Day 4: For Purity and Obedience
Méditation
Let us meditate on the Fourth Joyful Mystery, the Presentation. Mary, though not subject to the law of purification, humbly submits to it. She offers her Divine Son to the Father in the Temple, and hears the sorrowful prophecy of Simeon. In this mystery, we see her perfect obedience and her immaculate purity. Let us resolve to obey God’s commandments and the laws of His Church, and to preserve our souls and bodies in perfect purity.
Prière du jour
O most pure and obedient Virgin, who didst present the Light of the world in the Temple, obtain for us the virtues of purity and obedience. Grant that we may keep our hearts clean from all stain of sin and that we may joyfully submit our will to the will of God in all things, accepting with patience the crosses He sends us. Amen.
Jour 5 : Day 5: For the Grace to Seek Jesus
Méditation
Let us meditate on the Fifth Joyful Mystery, the Finding of Jesus in the Temple. After three days of sorrowful searching, Mary and Joseph find the Child Jesus among the doctors, hearing them and asking them questions. His reply, “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” reveals His divine mission. Let us learn from this mystery to seek Jesus above all things, especially when we have lost Him through sin, and to make God’s will the sole business of our lives.
Prière du jour
O Mary, whose heart was pierced with sorrow at the loss of thy Son, and filled with joy at finding Him, obtain for us the grace to seek Jesus earnestly whenever we stray. Grant that we may never lose Him by mortal sin, and that our one desire may be to remain always in His grace and to be occupied with the things of our Heavenly Father. Amen.
Jour 6 : Day 6: For True Contrition for our Sins
Méditation
Let us meditate on the First Sorrowful Mystery, the Agony in the Garden. Our Lord, overwhelmed with sorrow at the sight of our sins, sweats blood. He prays to His Father: “Not my will, but thine, be done.” He finds His apostles asleep, unable to watch one hour with Him. Let us contemplate the malice of our sins, which caused such agony to our loving Saviour, and let us resolve to make reparation through prayer and penance.
Prière du jour
O Mother of Sorrows, who didst share in the agony of thy Son, obtain for us a true and heartfelt contrition for our sins. Grant that we may understand the immense evil of offending so good a God, and that we may be willing to suffer anything rather than consent to sin again. Teach us to watch and pray, that we may not enter into temptation. Amen.
Jour 7 : Day 7: For the Spirit of Mortification
Méditation
Let us meditate on the Second Sorrowful Mystery, the Scourging at the Pillar. The innocent Jesus is cruelly scourged, His flesh torn to expiate our sins of the flesh. He endures this torment with infinite patience and love for us. Let us consider how we have so often offended God by indulging our senses, and how little we have done to mortify our bodies and bring them into subjection to the spirit.
Prière du jour
O Virgin most pure, whose heart was torn by the sufferings of thy scourged Son, obtain for us the grace of holy mortification. Help us to chastise our bodies and to control our senses, that we may atone for our past sins and preserve our souls from future falls. Instill in us a love for penance and a hatred for sensuality. Amen.
Jour 8 : Day 8: For Patience in Adversity
Méditation
Let us meditate on the Fourth Sorrowful Mystery, the Carrying of the Cross. Our Lord, weakened and covered with wounds, carries the heavy wood of the Cross to Calvary. He falls three times, yet rises again to complete His sacrifice. He meets His sorrowful Mother on this painful journey. Let us learn from our Saviour to carry our own crosses with patience and resignation, seeing in them the instruments of our salvation.
Prière du jour
O Mother of the afflicted, who didst follow thy Son on the way to Calvary, obtain for us the virtue of patience in all our trials. When the cross of sickness, poverty, or persecution weighs upon us, grant that we may unite our sufferings with those of Jesus and carry our burdens without complaint, for the love of Him who suffered so much for us. Amen.
Jour 9 : Day 9: For the Love of Jesus and Mary
Méditation
Let us meditate on the Fifth Sorrowful Mystery, the Crucifixion. Jesus is nailed to the Cross and dies for our salvation. He gives us His Mother to be our own, saying, “Behold thy mother.” Mary stands at the foot of the Cross, offering her Son to the Eternal Father and sharing in His sacrifice. Let us resolve to love Jesus, who has loved us to the end, and to cherish Mary as our own dear Mother.
Prière du jour
O Queen of Martyrs, who stood steadfastly at the foot of the Cross, obtain for us a tender and enduring love for thy crucified Son and for thee, our Mother. Grant us the grace of final perseverance, that we may live and die in the love of God. May the Cross be our hope, our strength, and our consolation in life and in death. Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us.
We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
(Here recite one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be for the intention of this novena.)
