Prière Introductive
Introductory Prayer
(To be said each day)
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
O Mary, Mother of God, who didst bring forth the Redeemer of the world, thou art justly called Our Lady of Deliverance, for thou dost ever come to the aid of thy children in their bonds. I, a poor sinner, fly to thy protection and implore thy aid against all the evils that afflict my soul and body. I am surrounded by enemies, weighed down by sorrows, and chained by my own iniquities. O Mother of Mercy, have pity on me.
I have come to thee with confidence, for thou art never invoked in vain. I offer thee this novena, and I ask thee, through the merits of thy Divine Son, to grant me the particular grace I now implore…
(Here mention your intention)
…if it be for the glory of God and the good of my soul. And I ask above all for the grace to be delivered from the slavery of sin and to persevere in the love of God until death. Amen.
Jour 1 : Day 1: Our Lady, Deliverer from Sin
Méditation
Let us consider how the Blessed Virgin Mary, by her fiat, became the instrument of our first deliverance, bringing into the world the Redeemer who would crush the head of the serpent. She, the Immaculate Conception, was preserved from all stain of original sin, making her the perfect enemy of Satan and the first fruit of the Redemption. Her whole life was a battle against sin, a perfect conformity to the will of God. We, who are so often enchained by our evil habits and sinful inclinations, look to her as the model of perfect freedom in God’s service.
Prière du jour
O Mary, most pure Virgin, who didst never know the slavery of sin, I beseech thee, look with pity upon me, a poor slave to my passions. By thy perfect purity and thy powerful intercession, obtain for me the grace of a sincere contrition for my sins and the strength to break the chains of my evil habits. Deliver me, O loving Mother, from all that displeases thy Son, and lead me into the glorious liberty of the children of God. Amen.
Jour 2 : Day 2: Our Lady, Terror of Demons
Méditation
Let us meditate upon the power which God has given to the Blessed Virgin over the devil and his legions. The ancient Fathers of the Church call her the “Terror of demons.” As the woman foretold in Genesis, she is in perpetual enmity with the serpent. Her humility confounds his pride, her purity vanquishes his filth, and her obedience crushes his rebellion. In all our spiritual combats, we have in her a most powerful general, leading the armies of Heaven for our defense. To invoke her holy name is to put the infernal enemy to flight.
Prière du jour
O August Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels, who from the beginning has received from God the power and mission to crush the head of Satan; I humbly beseech thee, send forth thy holy legions, that under thy command and by thy power, they may pursue the demons, combat them everywhere, repress their audacity, and drive them back into the abyss. O good and tender Mother, thou shalt ever be my love and my hope! Protect me and deliver me from the snares of the enemy. Amen.
Jour 3 : Day 3: Our Lady, Deliverer from Worldly Attachments
Méditation
Let us consider the perfect detachment of Our Lady from all the goods and vanities of this world. She who was Queen of Heaven and Earth lived a life of poverty, humility, and hiddenness in Nazareth. Her treasures were not of this world, but were the virtues that adorned her soul and the love of God that filled her heart. We are often enslaved by our attachment to worldly possessions, honors, and pleasures, which distract us from our true end. Our Lady of Deliverance teaches us where true freedom and happiness are to be found: in a heart empty of self and full of God.
Prière du jour
O Mary, model of perfect detachment, who didst prefer the poverty of Nazareth to all the kingdoms of the world, deliver me from the chains of worldly attachments. Obtain for me a holy indifference to the perishable goods of this earth, that my heart may be free to love God above all things. Teach me to use the things of this world only as a means to attain the next, and to seek my only treasure in the possession of thy Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Jour 4 : Day 4: Our Lady, Deliverer from Fear and Anxiety
Méditation
Let us meditate on the unshakable peace and confidence of the Blessed Virgin in the midst of the greatest trials. At the foot of the Cross, her heart was pierced with a sword of sorrow, yet her faith did not waver, nor did her hope fail. She is the Mother of Holy Hope, the anchor for souls tossed by the storms of anxiety, fear, and scruples. In our moments of darkness and distress, when our hearts are troubled, let us fly to her, who is the “Cause of Our Joy” and the surest refuge against despair.
Prière du jour
O Mother of Holy Hope, who didst stand with unwavering trust at the foot of the Cross, I come to thee with my heart full of anxiety and fear. Deliver me from all useless worry and from the spirit of despondency. Increase in me the virtue of hope, that I may abandon myself entirely to the providence of our Heavenly Father. Be my refuge in tribulation and my peace in turmoil, that, resting in thy maternal care, I may fear no evil. Amen.
Jour 5 : Day 5: Our Lady, Health of the Sick
Méditation
Let us consider the tender compassion of Our Lady for the sick and the suffering. From the wedding at Cana to this very day, she has never ceased to show her maternal solicitude for her children in their bodily and spiritual infirmities. The Church invokes her as “Health of the Sick,” for countless are the cures and reliefs obtained through her intercession. She not only obtains healing when it is God’s will, but also grants the grace to bear our crosses with patience and to unite our sufferings with those of her Divine Son for the salvation of souls.
Prière du jour
O most clement Virgin, Health of the Sick and Consoler of the Afflicted, look with compassion upon all who suffer in body or soul. I commend to thy care (mention the sick person or your own illness). If it be the will of God, obtain for them a full recovery. But above all, grant them the grace of patience in their sufferings and a perfect conformity to God’s holy will. May their sickness be a means of purification and a source of merit for eternal life. Amen.
Jour 6 : Day 6: Our Lady, Deliverer of the Souls in Purgatory
Méditation
Let us meditate on the maternal charity of the Blessed Virgin towards the souls suffering in Purgatory. These blessed souls are certain of their salvation, yet they endure great pains as they are purified of all stain before entering Heaven. They are unable to merit for themselves, and they depend upon our prayers. Our Lady’s intercession is most powerful in obtaining their release. She, the Gate of Heaven, descends often to that place of cleansing to console her children and deliver them, bringing them into the light of glory.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Queen of all Saints and Mother of Mercy, have pity on the holy souls detained in Purgatory. Thou art their sweet consolation and their greatest hope of deliverance. I offer through thy immaculate hands all my prayers, works, and sufferings for their relief. Vouchsafe, O merciful Mother, to apply the merits of the Passion of thy Son to these souls, and hasten the day of their entry into Paradise, where they may praise God and intercede for us for all eternity. Amen.
Jour 7 : Day 7: Our Lady, Deliverer of the Church
Méditation
Let us consider the Church Militant, the Mystical Body of Christ on earth, which is ceaselessly assailed by the world, the flesh, and the devil. In every age, she is beset by persecutions, heresies, and the sins of her own children. But we must not lose heart, for Christ has promised that the gates of hell shall not prevail against her. Our Lord has given us His own Mother to be the Mother and Protectress of the Church. She is the “Help of Christians,” the shield of the faithful, and the vessel that brings the Church safely through every storm.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Help of Christians and Mother of the Church, we entrust to thy protection our Holy Father the Pope, all bishops, priests, and the entire Christian people. Defend the Church from all her enemies, both visible and invisible. Deliver her from heresies, schisms, and all scandals. Raise up holy vocations and inflame all hearts with apostolic zeal, that the Kingdom of thy Son may be extended throughout the world. Protect our nation and our families, and keep us steadfast in the one true Faith. Amen.
Jour 8 : Day 8: Our Lady, Deliverer of Those in Error
Méditation
Let us consider the countless souls held captive by errors, false religions, or ignorance of the true God. Jesus Christ died for all men, and it is His will that all should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. Our Lady, as Mother of the Redeemer, is also the Mother of all mankind. Her heart yearns for the conversion of sinners and the enlightenment of those who sit in darkness. She is the Star of the Sea who guides wanderers to the safe harbor of the Catholic Faith.
Prière du jour
O Mary, Refuge of Sinners and Mother of all peoples, we pray for the conversion of all who do not yet know thy Son. Through thy powerful intercession, deliver them from the bondage of error and the darkness of unbelief. Obtain for missionaries the grace to preach the Gospel with courage, and open the hearts of their hearers to the truth. Bring all wandering sheep back to the one fold of Christ, that there may be one flock and one Shepherd. Amen.
Jour 9 : Day 9: Our Lady, Deliverer unto a Holy Death
Méditation
Let us meditate upon the final and most important deliverance: that from a bad death and eternal damnation. The whole of our life is a preparation for this final moment, upon which our eternity depends. The devil redoubles his assaults at the hour of our death, seeking to drive us to despair. Who can help us in that terrible hour but she whom we invoke daily as “Our Lady of a Holy Death”? She will be there to defend us, to present us to her Son, and to open for us the gates of Paradise.
Prière du jour
O Mary, my dearest Mother, who didst assist at the death of thy Son on Calvary, and who didst receive St. Joseph in thy blessed arms, I implore thy aid for the hour of my death. Deliver me then from the final assaults of the enemy. Obtain for me the grace to receive the Last Sacraments with perfect faith, hope, and charity, and to pronounce thy holy name and the sweet name of Jesus with my last breath. Be my advocate before the judgment seat, and lead my soul into everlasting glory. Amen.
Prière Conclusive
Concluding Prayer
O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Deliverance, who art the glory of Jerusalem, the joy of Israel, and the honor of our people, I thank thee for all the graces I have received during this novena. I place myself and all my concerns under thy mantle of protection. Be thou my guide in doubt, my strength in temptation, my refuge in persecution, and my hope in life and in death. Deliver me, O powerful Mother, from all that offends thy Son, and obtain for me the final grace of perseverance. Amen.
(Recite three Hail Marys in thanksgiving)
