The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Contexte Historique
The Lord’s Prayer, or the Our Father (Pater Noster in Latin), is the most perfect of prayers, for it was taught by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself to His disciples when they asked Him how they should pray. It is recorded in the Holy Gospels of Saint Matthew (6:9-13) and Saint Luke (11:2-4). The Church holds this prayer in the highest esteem, incorporating it into the Holy Mass and the Divine Office. It contains the seven petitions which address the glory of the Father and the needs of His children, making it the very model of all Christian prayer.
