Novena to Our Lady, Cause of Our Joy

Novena to Our Lady of Happiness - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

    Introductory Prayer for Each Day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our most gentle Mother, we come before thee as thy children to honour thee under the title of ‘Cause of Our Joy.’ We are weary of the false and fleeting happiness which the world offers, and we long for that true and lasting joy which comes from thy Son alone. We consecrate these nine days of prayer to thee, humbly asking that thou wouldst obtain for us from the Heart of Jesus the particular grace we now seek… (Here mention your intention), and above all, the grace of a holy and joyful life. Amen.

Jour 1 : Day 1: The Joy of Humble Obedience

    Méditation

Let us consider the first cause of Our Lady’s joy: her perfect and humble submission to the will of God. At the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel brought a message that would change the course of history. Mary, though troubled, did not hesitate. Her response, ‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word,’ was an act of complete trust and surrender. This fiat was the key that unlocked the door to our salvation and filled her soul with a joy unknown to the world—the joy of perfect union with the Divine Will. True happiness begins not in seeking our own will, but in joyfully embracing the will of God, whatever it may be.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, who didst find thy happiness in perfect obedience to the Father, obtain for me the grace to say ‘yes’ to God in all things. Teach me to find joy not in my own plans, but in the holy and perfect designs of Providence. May I, like thee, become a humble instrument in the hands of the Almighty, and so find the peace which the world cannot give. Amen.

Jour 2 : Day 2: The Joy of Holy Charity

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the joy that springs from holy charity. No sooner had Our Lady conceived the Son of God than she arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Juda, to serve her cousin Elizabeth. She who bore the King of Kings made herself a servant. Her joy was not a treasure to be hoarded, but a gift to be shared. In her canticle, the Magnificat, she proclaimed the greatness of the Lord, her joy overflowing in praise and service. This is the second lesson of happiness: it is found not in being served, but in serving; not in receiving, but in giving for the love of God.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, whose heart overflowed with charity for thy neighbour, enkindle in my soul a spark of that same divine love. Drive from me all sloth and selfishness, that I may go forth with haste to serve Christ in my brethren. Grant that in forgetting myself, I may find the true and lasting joy that comes from a life of charitable service. Amen.

Jour 3 : Day 3: The Joy of Adoration

    Méditation

Let us contemplate the pure and holy joy of adoration. In the poverty of the stable at Bethlehem, Our Lady gave birth to the Saviour of the world. She held in her arms the Word made Flesh. What ineffable joy must have filled her soul as she gazed upon the face of her God, now her infant Son! The shepherds and the Magi came to adore, but hers was the first and most perfect adoration. She teaches us that the deepest source of joy on earth is to be found in the silent, loving contemplation of Jesus, especially in the Blessed Sacrament. There, as in Bethlehem, He is present for us, waiting for our love.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, who didst hold the King of Heaven in thine arms, obtain for me a deep and tender devotion to thy Son, Jesus. Grant me a spirit of adoration, that I may find my delight in His presence. May my heart become a manger, poor and humble, but warmed with love, where He may deign to dwell and be the source of all my joy. Amen.

Jour 4 : Day 4: The Joy of a Pure Heart

    Méditation

Let us consider the joy that is rooted in purity and obedience to the Law. Our Lady, though purest of all creatures and exempt from the Law, humbly submitted to the rite of Purification. In the Temple, she offered her Son to the Father, a sacrifice of love. There, the holy Simeon prophesied that a sword of sorrow would pierce her heart, yet even this foreknowledge could not diminish the serene joy of a soul perfectly aligned with God’s commandments. True joy requires a pure heart, for as Our Lord Himself said, ‘Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.’ Purity and obedience are the guardians of holy joy.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, model of purity and obedience, cleanse my heart from all that is displeasing to God. Obtain for me the grace to love God’s law and to observe it faithfully, not as a burden, but as a path to true freedom and happiness. May my soul be a worthy temple for the Holy Ghost, that I may experience the joy that is promised to the pure of heart. Amen.

Jour 5 : Day 5: The Joy of Finding Jesus

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the joy of finding Jesus after a period of sorrow. For three days, Mary and Joseph searched for the lost Child with hearts full of anxiety. Their sorrow was great, but how much greater was their joy when they found Him in the Temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them and asking them questions. This mystery teaches us that even in the devout life, there are times of trial and desolation when God seems distant. But if we, like Mary, seek Him with perseverance and a sorrowful heart, we shall surely find Him again, and our joy will be all the greater for the trial we have endured.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, who didst experience the anguish of losing Jesus and the delight of finding Him, be my comfort in times of spiritual dryness. Teach me to seek the Lord without ceasing, even when He seems hidden from me. Grant that my faith may never waver, so that after every trial, I may find Him anew and rejoice in His presence more deeply than before. Amen.

Jour 6 : Day 6: The Joy of Trustful Intercession

    Méditation

Let us consider the joy of confident intercession. At the wedding feast in Cana, Our Lady noticed the need of the young couple and, with delicate charity and supreme confidence, brought it to her Son. ‘They have no wine,’ she said. Though He seemed at first to refuse, her faith in His goodness was unshaken. At her word, Our Lord performed His first public miracle, changing water into wine and bringing joy to the celebration. Mary is the Mediatrix of all graces. She finds her joy in obtaining graces for us, her children. Our happiness is increased when we turn to her with the trusting heart of a child, certain that she will present our needs to her Divine Son.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, powerful intercessor at the throne of God, I place all my needs, both temporal and spiritual, into thy hands. Teach me to have a boundless confidence in thy motherly care. Speak a word for me to thy Son, and I know that my prayers will be heard. May I experience the joy of thy powerful help in my life, and ever praise thy holy name. Amen.

Jour 7 : Day 7: The Joy of the Resurrection

    Méditation

Let us contemplate the greatest of all joys: the joy of the Resurrection. The sword of sorrow that pierced Mary’s heart on Calvary was transformed into a glorious joy on Easter morning. Who can imagine the happiness that flooded her soul when she beheld her Son, risen, glorious, and triumphant over sin and death? This is the central truth of our faith and the foundation of our Christian hope. Our sorrows, our trials, and even death itself are not the end. Through Christ, they are pathways to a joy that will never fade. Mary’s joy at the Resurrection is a pledge of the joy that awaits all who persevere in faith.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, who didst rejoice more than any other at the Resurrection of thy Son, strengthen my faith in His victory. In moments of sorrow and desolation, remind me that the Cross is not the final word. Obtain for me a share in thy Easter joy, a profound and unshakable happiness rooted in the hope of my own resurrection and eternal life with God. Amen.

Jour 8 : Day 8: The Joy of the Holy Ghost

    Méditation

Let us consider the joy of the Holy Ghost. In the Upper Room, Mary gathered with the Apostles in prayer, awaiting the coming of the Paraclete. When the Holy Ghost descended upon them in tongues of fire, He filled their souls with His sevenfold gifts. He is the Spirit of Love and Joy. Mary, His most pure spouse, was filled with the Holy Ghost in a manner surpassing all others. This divine Spirit is the very source of interior happiness, the ‘joy in the Holy Ghost’ of which Saint Paul speaks. It is a joy that is not dependent on external circumstances, but is a fruit of the divine life dwelling within the soul.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, perfect Spouse of the Holy Ghost, pray for me that I may open my heart fully to His divine action. Obtain for me a new Pentecost, that the Spirit of God may descend upon me, purify me, and fill me with His gifts. May He produce in me the blessed fruit of joy, that I may live my life in His holy presence and be a witness of His love to the world. Amen.

Jour 9 : Day 9: The Joy of Eternal Reward

    Méditation

Let us meditate upon the ultimate joy of heavenly glory. At the end of her earthly life, Our Lady was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven. There, she was crowned by her Divine Son to be Queen of Heaven and Earth. This is the culmination of her joy, a perfect and unending happiness in the beatific vision of the Most Holy Trinity. Her glory is a promise of our own destiny. She is the Cause of Our Joy because she shows us the goal to which we are called and intercedes for us that we may one day attain it. The fleeting pleasures of this world are but a shadow of the eternal joy prepared for those who love God.

    Prière du jour

O Mary, Cause of Our Joy, Queen of Heaven, who now dost enjoy the eternal bliss for which we long, turn thine eyes of mercy towards me, a poor exile in this vale of tears. Inspire in me a holy desire for Heaven, my true home. Grant that, by imitating thy virtues on earth, I may be found worthy to share in thy glory for all eternity, there to rejoice with thee and all the saints in the presence of thy Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

    Prière Conclusive

    Concluding Prayer for Each Day

O Mary, Immaculate Virgin, who art called by the Church ‘Cause of Our Joy,’ because thou didst give to the world Jesus, the supreme Joy, we implore thee to obtain for us a share in this holy happiness. Intercede for us with thy Son that we may receive the grace to live with a joyful heart, despite the trials of this life, ever mindful of the eternal bliss that awaits us.

(Recite one Our Father, three Hail Marys, and one Glory Be.)

    V. Thou art the Cause of our joy, O Virgin Mary.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Let us pray.
O God, who by the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary, hast bestowed upon mankind the reward of eternal salvation; grant, we beseech Thee, that we may experience her intercession for us, through whom we have been made worthy to receive the Author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
