A Prayer for Old Age and for a Happy Death

    For Grace in Advanced Years

O Lord my God, who hast led me from my youth and hast brought me to the threshold of old age, I give Thee thanks for all the benefits Thou hast bestowed upon me. But now, O Lord, my days decline. As my bodily strength doth fail, I beseech Thee, let the vigour of my soul increase. Forsake me not, O my God, when my strength faileth me; but grant that the more my body decayeth, the more my soul may be renewed in Thy sight.

Grant me the grace to bear the trials of my age with patience and with perfect resignation to Thy holy will. Let not my infirmities make me a burden to others, but give me a spirit of meekness, of humility, and of charity. Pardon me, O Lord, for all my past sins and negligences, and purify my soul in the precious Blood of Thy Son, that I may be found worthy to stand before Thee.

For the Grace of a Happy Death

O most merciful Jesus, who didst die for me upon the Cross, I pray Thee, by the merits of Thy sacred Passion, grant unto me the grace of a happy death. When the hour of my departure is at hand, suffer me not to be taken unprepared, but let me receive the holy Sacraments with faith, hope, and charity.

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and Refuge of Sinners, assist me in my last agony. O glorious Saint Joseph, Patron of the Dying, into thy hands I commend my soul. My holy Guardian Angel, forsake me not in that final hour. May I, fortified by the rites of Holy Mother Church, breathe forth my spirit in peace, and come at last to behold Thy face in the eternal light of heaven. Amen.

    Contexte Historique

The Catholic tradition has always held a profound respect for the elderly and has encouraged the faithful to prepare for the end of life, a practice known as ‘memento mori’ (remember you will die). Prayers for old age and for a ‘happy death’—that is, a death in a state of grace, fortified by the Sacraments—are a staple of Catholic piety. These devotions often combine petitions for patience in the face of physical decline with a humble entrustment of the soul to God’s mercy, frequently invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, the latter being the patron saint of the dying.
