Novena of the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Litany of the Sacred Heart - Illustration prière catholique

    Prière Introductive

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O my God, I firmly believe that Thou art here present. I adore Thee with the most profound humility. I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee by my sins, because Thou art infinitely good. I resolve, with the help of Thy grace, never more to offend Thee. I offer Thee this novena in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for Thy greater glory, and for the salvation of my soul.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
    Christ, have mercy on us.
    Lord, have mercy on us.
    Christ, hear us.
    Christ, graciously hear us.
God the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us.
God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us.
God the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us.
Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us.

Jour 1 : Day 1: The Heart of the Son of the Eternal Father

    Méditation

On this first day, we contemplate the divine origin of the Heart of Jesus. It is not the heart of a mere man, but the Heart of the Son of the Eternal Father, substantially united to the Word of God. This Heart, formed by the Holy Spirit, possesses an infinite majesty, for it is the Heart of God Himself. In adoring this Heart, we adore the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity who took on our human nature without ceasing to be God. Let us approach this mystery with profound reverence and awe.

    • Heart of Jesus, Son of the eternal Father, have mercy on us.

    • Heart of Jesus, of infinite majesty, have mercy on us.

Jour 2 : Day 2: The Heart as the Holy Temple of God

    Méditation

The Heart of Jesus is presented to us today as the true dwelling place of God. It is the Holy Temple, the Tabernacle of the Most High, far surpassing the temple of Jerusalem. It is the very House of God and the Gate of Heaven, for it is through the Heart of Christ, through His Person, that humanity has access to the Father. To enter into His Heart through prayer is to enter into the sanctuary where God dwells and to find the certain path to eternal life.

    Prière du jour

    • Heart of Jesus, holy temple of God, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, tabernacle of the Most High, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, house of God and gate of heaven, have mercy on us.

Jour 3 : Day 3: The Heart, Burning Furnace of Charity

    Méditation

Today’s invocations reveal the very nature of the Sacred Heart: it is a burning furnace of charity. This is not a mere sentimental love, but the theological virtue of Charity itself—the infinite, self-giving love of God for His creation. This Heart is the abode of justice and love, perfectly balanced. It is full of goodness, overflowing with a desire to pour out graces upon us. Let us ask for the grace to have our own hearts enkindled by this divine fire, to love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.

    • Heart of Jesus, burning furnace of charity, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, abode of justice and love, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, full of goodness and love, have mercy on us.

Jour 4 : Day 4: The Heart, Abyss of All Virtues

    Méditation

The Heart of Jesus is the abyss of all virtues. Every perfection—humility, obedience, fortitude, patience, purity—exists in Him in its most perfect and heroic degree. Because He is the source of all holiness, His Heart is most worthy of all praise, from angels and men. He must be the King and center of all hearts. Our own hearts, so often divided and weak, find their model and their strength in His. To enthrone the Sacred Heart in our lives is to submit our will to His, allowing His virtues to reign in us.

    • Heart of Jesus, abyss of all virtues, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, most worthy of all praise, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, king and center of all hearts, have mercy on us.

Jour 5 : Day 5: The Heart, Treasury of Wisdom

    Méditation

In the Heart of Jesus reside all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. This is not worldly knowledge, but the divine wisdom that ordered creation and governs salvation history. In Him dwells the whole fullness of the Divinity, as St. Paul teaches. This Heart, perfectly pleasing to the Father, is the key to understanding the mysteries of God. Let us turn to the Heart of Jesus to find light in our darkness, understanding in our confusion, and the true wisdom that leads to salvation.

    • Heart of Jesus, in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, in whom dwells the whole fullness of divinity, have mercy on us.

Jour 6 : Day 6: The Heart, Source of All Graces

    Méditation

The Heart of Christ is an inexhaustible fountain from which we have all received every grace. It is the desire of the everlasting hills, the fulfillment of the prophecies and longings of the Old Covenant. This Heart is patient with our weaknesses and most merciful towards our failings. It does not tire of our pleas but enriches all who invoke it with faith. Let us approach this fount of grace with confidence, knowing that He is ever ready to bestow His gifts upon us.

    Prière du jour

    • Heart of Jesus, of whose fullness we have all received, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, desire of the everlasting hills, have mercy on us.

    • Heart of Jesus, enriching all who invoke Thee, have mercy on us.

Jour 7 : Day 7: The Heart, Propitiation for Our Sins

    Méditation

Today we meditate on the Heart of Jesus in its role as our propitiation. Propitiation is the act of satisfying the demands of divine justice for our sins. The Heart of Jesus, source of all holiness, willingly took upon itself the weight of our iniquities. It was loaded down with opprobrium, scorned and rejected, and ultimately bruised for our offenses on the Cross. This is the immense price of our redemption. Let us contemplate this mystery with a contrite and grateful heart, detesting our sins which caused Him such suffering.

    Prière du jour

    • Heart of Jesus, source of life and holiness, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, propitiation for our sins, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, loaded down with opprobrium, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, bruised for our offenses, have mercy on us.

Jour 8 : Day 8: The Pierced Heart, Source of Life

    Méditation

The Passion of Christ is the ultimate proof of His love. His Heart was obedient unto death, even death on a Cross, perfectly fulfilling the will of the Father. This perfect obedience repaired the disobedience of Adam. After His death, His Heart was pierced with a lance, from which flowed blood and water—symbols of the sacraments of the Eucharist and Baptism, the fount of the Church’s life. In this pierced Heart, we find the source of all consolation, our very life, and the pledge of our future resurrection.

    • Heart of Jesus, obedient unto death, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, pierced with a lance, have mercy on us.
    • Heart of Jesus, source of all consolation, have mercy on us.

Jour 9 : Day 9: The Heart, Our Hope and Salvation

    Méditation

On this final day, we contemplate the glorious fruits of the Sacred Heart’s sacrifice. It is our peace and reconciliation, for through His Blood, He has reconciled us to the Father. He is the perpetual victim for our sins, offered in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. For those who trust in Him, His Heart is salvation. For those who die in His grace, it is their certain hope of Heaven. And in eternity, the Sacred Heart is the delight of all the Saints, the object of their unending praise and adoration. May we persevere in devotion to this Heart, so that we may one day share in their joy.

    R. Make our hearts like unto Thine.

    Let us pray.
Almighty and eternal God, look upon the Heart of Thy most beloved Son and upon the praises and satisfaction which He offers Thee in the name of sinners; and to those who implore Thy mercy, do Thou, appeased, grant pardon in the name of the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.

(It is recommended to conclude with an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.)
