The quest for original purity and spiritual renewal is fundamentally embodied in Catholic liturgy through the mystery of the Immaculate Conception. This collect, taken from the official texts of the Church, is the ultimate prayer to ask for the purification of the soul, prepare one’s heart, and begin a process of profound renewal.

The true prayer of purification and preparation

« O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin prepared a worthy dwelling for your Son, grant, we pray, that, as you preserved her from every stain by virtue of the Death of your Son, which you foresaw, so, through her intercession, we, too, may be cleansed and admitted to your presence. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen. »
Roman Missal, Collect

How to integrate this prayer into your daily life?

This prayer marks a desire for a fresh start. Recite it to renew your spiritual intentions. You can refer to it at any time by scanning your connected medallion or bracelet during your moments of reflection, keeping this bond of purification always close at hand.

Prayers for the Faithful Departed

It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. (II Maccabees 12:46)

The Eternal Rest (Requiem Aeternam)

V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.
V. May they rest in peace.
R. Amen.

In Latin:
V. Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine.
R. Et lux perpetua luceat eis.
V. Requiescant in pace.
R. Amen.

De Profundis (Psalm 129)

A prayer from the depths of sorrow for the remission of sins and the repose of the soul.

Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.
Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities: Lord, who shall stand it.
For with thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of thy law, I have waited for thee, O Lord.
My soul hath relied on his word: my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
From the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.
Because with the Lord there is mercy: and with him plentiful redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory

O gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the souls of Thy departed servants. Be not severe in Thy judgments, but let some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames, and do Thou, O merciful Saviour, send Thy angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light, and peace. Amen.

For a Recently Deceased Person

Absolve, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the soul of Thy servant [Name], that he (she) who is dead to the world, may live unto Thee; and whatsoever sins he (she) hath committed in this life through human frailty, do Thou, by the pardon of Thy most merciful goodness, wipe away. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Contexte Historique

The practice of praying for the dead is an ancient and venerable tradition in the Catholic Church, rooted in the belief in Purgatory and the Communion of Saints. The Church teaches that souls who die in God’s grace and friendship, but are still imperfectly purified, undergo a final purification, or Purgatory, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The faithful on earth can help these souls by their prayers, suffrages, alms, and especially by the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The ‘Requiem Aeternam’ (Eternal Rest) is the most common of these prayers, often recited after the Rosary or at the conclusion of other devotions, particularly during the month of November, which is dedicated to the Holy Souls.

Prayers for Family Reconciliation

These prayers may be said to implore God’s grace for the healing of division and the restoration of peace within a family.

Prayer to the Holy Family

O most loving Jesus, who by Thy sublime virtues and the example of Thy domestic life, didst consecrate the family which Thou didst choose on earth; in Thy clemency look down upon our family, humbly prostrate before Thee and imploring Thy mercy. Remember that this family belongs to Thee; for to Thee we have in a special way dedicated and devoted ourselves. Look upon us in Thy loving kindness; preserve us from all danger; give us help in the time of need, and grant us the grace to persevere to the end in the imitation of Thy Holy Family; that having revered Thee and loved Thee faithfully on earth, we may bless and praise Thee eternally in heaven.

O Mary, most sweet Mother, to thy intercession we have recourse, knowing that thy Divine Son will hear thy prayers.

O glorious Patriarch, St. Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer, by the hands of Mary, our prayers to Jesus.

Amen.

Prayer for the Healing of Family Wounds

O Merciful Father, who knowest the sorrows that afflict our family, we fly to Thy protection and implore Thy aid. By the Precious Blood of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, we beseech Thee to wash away the stains of our sins, which are the cause of our divisions. Soften our hearts, that we may forgive one another the trespasses we have committed. Take from us all spirit of pride, anger, and resentment.

Grant us, O Lord, the grace of humility, patience, and mutual charity. Heal the wounds of our hearts and our memories. Let Thy peace, which surpasseth all understanding, reign in our home. May the bonds of love, which have been broken or strained, be mended and strengthened by the fire of Thy Divine Love.

We ask this through Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Invocation to the Queen of Peace

Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us.
St. Joseph, Protector of the Holy Family, pray for us.
St. Monica, model of patience and prayer, pray for us.

Contexte Historique

The family, in Catholic teaching, is considered the ‘domestic church,’ the first and most fundamental community of faith. Prayers for family reconciliation are deeply rooted in this understanding. While no single, ancient prayer is prescribed, the faithful have always turned to God to heal the inevitable frictions and divisions that can arise in family life. These devotions draw their inspiration from the ultimate model of the Holy Family of Nazareth—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. By invoking them, Catholics seek the grace to imitate their virtues of love, patience, forgiveness, and obedience to God’s will, thereby restoring the harmony and peace that God intends for every home.

Prayers for Parents and Children

A Child’s Prayer for Parents

O Almighty God, who hast given unto me my father and my mother, and made them to be an image of Thy authority and love, grant, I beseech Thee, that I may ever honour them and be obedient to their just commands. Vouchsafe to bless them for their constant care of me, reward their labours, and grant that, after serving Thee faithfully in this life, we may all be united in Thy heavenly kingdom to praise Thee for ever and ever. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Parent’s Prayer for Children

O Heavenly Father, who didst entrust Thine only-begotten Son to the care of Mary and Joseph, I commend my children unto Thine infinite mercy. Be Thou their guide and protector in all their ways. Defend them from the dangers of soul and body; keep them from the occasion of sin, and grant them the grace to know, to love, and to serve Thee faithfully. May they ever be a source of consolation to our family and a glory to Thy Holy Name. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Family for all Families

O most loving Jesus, who by Thy sublime and hidden virtues at Nazareth didst sanctify the family which Thou hadst chosen for Thyself on earth, look down with mercy upon our family, which prostrates itself before Thee and implores Thy protection.
Remember that we are Thine, for to Thee we have dedicated and devoted ourselves. Protect us in Thy mercy, deliver us from all dangers, come to our aid in our necessities, and give us the grace to persevere to the end in the imitation of Thy Holy Family; so that, after having served and loved Thee faithfully on earth, we may be able to praise and bless Thee eternally in heaven.
O Mary, most sweet Mother, we implore thy protection, knowing that thy divine Son will hear thy prayers.
And thou, O glorious Patriarch, Saint Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer our vows to Jesus through the hands of Mary. Amen.

Contexte Historique

The Christian tradition has always held the family in the highest esteem, viewing it as the ‘domestic church’ where faith is first taught and practiced. These prayers reflect this profound respect for the sacred bonds between parents and children. Drawing inspiration from the Holy Family of Nazareth—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—as the ultimate model of familial love, obedience, and piety, these devotions have been used for centuries by the faithful to seek God’s blessing upon their homes, to ask for the grace to fulfill their duties, and to pray for the spiritual and temporal welfare of their loved ones.

Prayers for Faithfulness in Marriage

These prayers may be said by a couple together, or by a spouse for the intention of their marriage.

A Prayer for Mutual Fidelity

O Almighty and Everlasting God, Who hast ordained the holy estate of Matrimony to be a sacred sign of the union betwixt Christ and His Church; look mercifully upon us Thy servants. We beseech Thee, grant us the grace of an unwavering fidelity, that we may keep the vows we have made one to another, and in Thy sight. Let our love be pure, our commitment steadfast, and our hearts united in Thee. Preserve us from all temptation that may assail our bond, and grant that we may live together in peace and holiness, honoring Thee in our union, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer to the Holy Family

O most loving Jesus, Who by Thy sublime virtues and the example of Thy domestic life, didst consecrate the family which Thou didst choose on earth; mercifully look down upon our household. We fly to Thy protection and implore Thy help.

O Mary, most sweet Mother, to thy intercession we have recourse, knowing that thy Son will hear thy prayers. And thou, O most glorious Patriarch, Saint Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer our prayers to Jesus through Mary’s hands.

O Holy Family, model of all Christian families, we entrust to you our marriage. Defend it from all dangers. Help us to be faithful to the sacred promises of our wedding day. Grant that we may live in perfect union, in mutual love, and in the fear of God. May we be a reflection of your own holy union, that after having honored you on earth, we may be worthy to praise you for ever in heaven. Amen.

A Prayer for One’s Spouse

O Lord, my God, I place my beloved spouse into Thy hands. Bless him (her), I pray Thee, and keep his (her) heart ever true to the sacred covenant we have made. Shield him (her) from all occasions of sin and from the snares of the enemy. Fill his (her) soul with Thy grace, that his (her) love for me may be a reflection of Thy love for the Church. Grant that we may grow old together in Thy service, and that our union on earth may be but a foretaste of the eternal union with Thee in Heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Contexte Historique

The Catholic Church holds matrimony to be a sacred sacrament, a visible sign of the invisible grace that unites a man and a woman in a covenant mirroring Christ’s love for His Church. Prayers for marital fidelity are deeply rooted in this theology, seeking divine assistance to uphold the solemn vows of faithfulness made before God. These devotions often draw upon the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—as the supreme model of domestic virtue, love, and unwavering loyalty. They are traditionally used by couples together or individually to ask for the strength to resist temptation and to sanctify their union.

Prayers for Physical and Spiritual Healing

In times of sickness of body or affliction of soul, the faithful have ever turned to God, the Divine Physician, seeking comfort, strength, and healing. These traditional prayers may be offered for oneself or for another in need of God’s merciful assistance.

A General Prayer for Healing

O Lord my God, I come to Thee in my time of need. Thou art the source of all life and health. I pray Thee to look with mercy upon Thy servant, and to grant relief from this affliction which weighs upon me (or upon N.).
If it be Thy holy will, restore me to health of body and soul, that I may serve Thee with a renewed spirit. But if it be Thy will that I should suffer, grant me the grace to bear my cross with patience and to unite my sufferings with those of Thy beloved Son, for the salvation of my soul and the souls of others.
I place all my trust in Thy loving providence. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Raphael the Archangel

O glorious Archangel Saint Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, thou art illustrious for thy gifts of wisdom and grace. Thou art a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners.
I beg thee, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once thou didst help the young Tobias on his travels. Because thou art the “medicine of God,” I humbly pray thee to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body.
I especially ask of thee the favour of (here mention your request) and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

O ever-Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comforter of the Afflicted, thou knowest my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Deign to cast upon me a look of mercy.
By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, thou wert pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence thou dispensest thy favours, and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.
I come, therefore, with fullest confidence, to implore thy maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the granting of my requests. Through gratitude for thy favours, I will endeavour to imitate thy virtues, that I may one day share thy glory. Amen.

Prayer for Inner Healing

Lord Jesus, Thou camest to heal our wounded and troubled hearts. I beseech Thee to heal the torments that cause anxiety in my heart; I beseech Thee, in a particular way, to heal all which are the cause of sin.
I beg Thee to come into my life and heal me of the psychological harms that struck me in my early years and from the injuries that they caused throughout my life. Lord Jesus, Thou knowest my burdens. I lay them all on Thy Good Shepherd’s Heart.
Heal, O Lord, all those intimate wounds that are the cause of physical illness. I offer Thee my heart. Accept it, Lord, purify it and give me the sentiments of Thy Divine Heart. Heal me, O Lord, from the pain of my memories, so that nothing that has happened to me will cause me to remain in pain and anguish, filled with anxiety.
Heal, O Lord, all those wounds that have been the cause of all the evil that is rooted in my life. I forgive all those who have offended me. Look upon those memories that made me unable to forgive. Thou who camest to forgive the afflicted of heart, please, heal my own heart. Amen.

Contexte Historique

The practice of praying for healing is deeply rooted in Judeo-Christian tradition, finding its ultimate expression in the ministry of Jesus Christ, who performed countless miracles of healing for both body and soul. The Catholic Church continues this ministry through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and through private and communal prayer. Devotions for healing often invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially under titles like Our Lady of Lourdes, or saints renowned as patrons against illness, such as Saint Raphael the Archangel, whose name means ‘God heals.’ These prayers are a testament to the faithful’s enduring trust in God’s power and mercy in times of suffering.

Prayers Before a Surgical Operation

Facing a surgical operation is a time of trial and anxiety. In these moments, the faithful are encouraged to turn to God, the source of all life and healing, placing their trust in His divine providence and asking for His grace to sustain them. These prayers are offered to sanctify this time of waiting, to ask for the skillful hands of the medical team, and to prepare the soul for whatever may be God’s will.

An Act of Resignation to the Divine Will

O Lord, my God, I now, at this moment, readily and willingly accept at Thy hand whatever kind of death it may please Thee to send me, with all its pains, penalties, and sorrows. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Lord Jesus, receive my soul.

My God, I accept the sickness with which Thou art pleased to visit me, and I desire to unite all my sufferings with the sufferings of my Saviour. I offer them to Thee to Thy greater glory, in thanksgiving for all the benefits I have received from Thee, in satisfaction for my sins, and to obtain the grace of a happy death. From this moment I resign myself to Thy holy will, and I desire to live and to die for Thee. Amen.

Prayer to Christ the Divine Physician

O Divine Physician, Jesus Christ, who didst go about healing all manner of sickness and every infirmity, I come to Thee now in my time of need. Thou art the way, the truth, and the life. In Thee I place all my hope and trust.

Deign to bless the hands of the surgeons, nurses, and all who will attend to me. Guide their minds and their hands that they may be instruments of Thy healing power. Remove all fear and anxiety from my heart, and fill me with the peace that surpasses all understanding. I abandon myself entirely to Thy most holy will, confident in Thy merciful love. If it be Thy will, restore me to health of body and soul, that I may serve Thee with renewed fervour for the rest of my days. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Luke the Evangelist

Most blessed Saint Luke, who wast a physician for the body and for the soul, and who didst record the healing miracles of the Lord Jesus, I implore thy powerful intercession in this time of my infirmity. Obtain for me from God the grace to bear my present sufferings with patience and to unite them to the Passion of Our Lord.

Pray for the physicians and surgeons who will treat me, that they may be enlightened by the Holy Ghost and that their hands may be guided by the angels of God. Ask our Divine Lord to bless their work, that it may be for His glory and for the restoration of my health. Amen.

Prayer for the Surgeon and Medical Staff

O merciful Father in heaven, I humbly beseech Thee to bless the surgeon who is to perform this operation, and all who will assist him. Grant them wisdom to understand my needs, clear judgment to make right decisions, and skill and steadiness of hand to perform their work well.

Inspire them with compassion and kindness, and sustain them with Thy strength and peace. May they be instruments of Thy healing grace, and may the result of their labours be for my good and for Thy greater honour and glory. Amen.

Contexte Historique

Since antiquity, Christians facing the perils of medical procedures have sought divine aid. This collection of prayers reflects the timeless Catholic practice of entrusting one’s body and soul to God, the Supreme Healer, before surgery. It combines an act of total surrender to God’s will with specific petitions for the medical staff, invoking Christ as the ‘Divine Physician’ and seeking the intercession of saints associated with medicine, such as St. Luke the Evangelist, a physician by trade, and Saints Cosmas and Damian, the patron saints of surgeons. These devotions provide spiritual comfort and fortify the patient with hope and peace.

Prayers for the Sick

The practice of praying for those who are ill is one of the most ancient and cherished traditions of the Church, reflecting the very ministry of Christ who healed the sick and comforted the afflicted. These prayers may be offered for oneself or for another, entrusting their suffering to the merciful heart of God.

A General Prayer for a Sick Person

O Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need: We humbly beseech Thee to behold, visit, and relieve Thy sick servant (Here mention the name) for whom our prayers are desired.
Look upon him with the eyes of Thy mercy; comfort him with a sense of Thy goodness; preserve him from the temptations of the enemy; and give him patience under his affliction.
In Thy good time, restore him to health, and enable him to lead the residue of his life in Thy fear, and to Thy glory; and grant that he may finally dwell with Thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, thou wert pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence thou dost dispense thy favours, and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.
I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence, to implore thy maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the granting of my requests. I will endeavour to imitate thy virtues, that I may one day share thy glory, and bless thee in eternity.
Amen.

Prayer to Saint Raphael the Archangel

O Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, thou art illustrious for thy gifts of wisdom and grace.
I especially ask of thee the favour (Here mention your request) and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Ghost.
Amen.

A Short Prayer for Resignation

Lord Jesus Christ, I accept this sickness from Thy hands, and I unite it to Thy Holy Passion. May it be for Thy honour and glory and for the salvation of my soul. I thank Thee for the graces Thou hast bestowed upon me, and I resign myself to Thy holy will, which desires only my good. If it be Thy will that I should recover my health, I beg this grace of Thee; but if it be Thy will that I should die, I commend my soul into Thy hands.
Amen.

Contexte Historique

Praying for the sick is a fundamental Christian duty, rooted in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ Himself. The Church considers visiting and caring for the sick a corporal work of mercy, and praying for them a spiritual work of mercy. These devotions are a personal and communal extension of the official Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Throughout history, the faithful have sought the intercession of saints renowned for healing, such as Our Lady of Lourdes, Saint Raphael the Archangel (whose name means ‘God heals’), and Saint Roch. These traditional prayers provide comfort, express hope, and unite the suffering of the individual with the redemptive Passion of Christ.

Prayer Before a Crucifix

Behold, O good and most sweet Jesus, I cast myself upon my knees in Thy sight, and with the most fervent desire of my soul, I pray and beseech Thee that Thou wouldst impress upon my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope, and charity, with true repentance for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment; while with deep affection and grief of soul, I ponder within myself and mentally contemplate Thy five most precious Wounds, having before my eyes that which David the prophet spoke of Thee, O good Jesus: They have pierced my hands and my feet, they have numbered all my bones. (Ps. 21: 17-18)

It is customary to add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be for the intentions of the Holy Father to gain the indulgence attached to this prayer.

Contexte Historique

This ancient and venerable prayer, whose Latin incipit is ‘En ego, o bone et dulcissime Iesu,’ has been a cherished devotion in the Church for centuries. It is traditionally recited while kneeling before an image of Christ crucified. The prayer serves as a profound meditation on the Passion and the Five Wounds of Our Lord, guiding the soul to ask for the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity, as well as true contrition. Various Popes have enriched this prayer with indulgences, particularly when recited with piety after Holy Communion.

The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy

This chaplet is prayed upon ordinary rosary beads.

Opening Prayers

Begin with the Sign of the Cross.
Then, optionally, say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Apostles’ Creed.

Our Father:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

On the large (Our Father) beads:

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Thy dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the ten small (Hail Mary) beads:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Concluding Doxology

After five decades, conclude by saying three times:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Closing Prayer

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Thy mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Thy holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen.

The Signature Prayer

A short prayer often associated with this devotion, inscribed on the image of the Divine Mercy:

Jesus, I trust in You.

Contexte Historique

The devotion to the Divine Mercy was given to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, through a series of revelations from Jesus Christ in the 1930s. Our Lord requested that she record these messages in a diary, now known as ‘Divine Mercy in My Soul.’ The core of the devotion is the message of God’s boundless mercy towards all souls, especially sinners. It is expressed through the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the veneration of the Image of Divine Mercy with the signature ‘Jesus, I trust in You,’ and the observance of the Feast of Mercy on the first Sunday after Easter.
